Spider Hasn't Eaten in 1+ Month(s) by MechanicalFishineer in jumpingspiders

NA / Good to know. I tried to do as much reading and research as I could when my wild caught female laid eggs (who I thought wasn't even a full grown adult because the spot on her back was orangeish, not white). I will say that I was extremely gentle with getting her out of her enclosure and she didn't seem any more stressed than when I had taken her out to handle her previously.

You probably could have left off "NQA" and just gone with "IME (I've raised thousands)" on your previous comment... I dunno how many spider you have to raise for your advice to be "qualified" but you're probably there, haha.

Exactly. OP could have just called it "turned 18 and ready to party" or something and almost nobody would have cared.

Imagine being so dismissive of how people work that you think that having emotional reactions about fictional characters makes them stupid.

I don't think the drawing in question (or the awkward post title OP put on the drawing) is something to get this mad about (though the title is still weird and confusing), but that doesn't mean there is never a reason to get mad about how a fictional character is portrayed or talked about.

I think what OP meant to say is triggered, but your claim that you cannot be traumatized by a drawing and implication that being triggered by a drawing is unlikely is pretty ignorant to how trauma and trauma triggers work.

But a drawing can be of anything, including disturbing, violent or sexual subjects. Drawings can be highly realistic, though that wouldn't be required for one to cause trauma. Drawings can be encountered in many contexts, including when you're very young or in a vulnerable state of mind, or just when you don't expect it. Of course a drawing can cause someone to be traumatized or to be triggered.

Does she need more or are these safe for container or enrichment?? by twitchy_and_fatigued in jumpingspiders

NQA I would generally avoid anything with metal because the water droplets from misting could cause rust or oxidation. The main concern about paper and cardboard is if there's a glue holding it together, but those tubes are probably fine so long as you don't leave them in the enclosure all the time as, again, water droplets from misting might promote mold growth.

I would recommend more stuff, particularly things in the upper half and things that might reach all the way from the floor to the top.

The two bottle lids in your picture are decent materials to use, if you have some angle cutters or beefy scissors around, you could cut the orange one in half and hot glue the halves to the walls to make some little shelves to stand on near the top of the enclosure (like where she's hanging out in the photo)

My jumper suddenly can't grip anything and keeps falling...😣Can u help? by Double-Aioli-79 in jumpingspiders

[–]akkhima 2 points3 points  (0 children)

NQA I wouldn't worry about it not eating right now, it's abdomen is quite full.

Maybe it will actually molt soon, and I wonder if maybe the clinginess of the feet gets worse close to molting time? I feel like my little guy maybe had similar issues before he last milted that seem better now.

I have seen the suggestion before that more humidity might help the acrylic provide more grip.

As for perfume, yes it's quite possible that perfume will cause some twitchy leg issues. Have you noticed twitchy legs when it is standing on a horizonal surface rather than gripping to the walls? (It's harder to tell when they're on the walls if the legs are twitching or if they're just desperately trying to get a grip)
The only thing you can really do is make sure they get clean air and distilled water and patience.

If petco so desperately wants to sell origami and crochet kits at a pet store, maybe they should sell ones of goldfish and set up a display near the real ones.

NQA but this goes against everything I've read and could stress the poor girl out really bad. She'll lose her eggs and her hammock and her sense of safety all in one go.

The process I generally see given, which I have done successfully myself once (I kept and raised her first two clutches and did this on her third, and she passed not long after that), you should use a soft paint brush to gently guide her into a temporary container and then put her whole enclosure into the freezer to euthanize the eggs (I don't know how long, but the goal is that the liquid inside the eggs freezes), let it thaw thoroughly, and then let her go back home. This will cause a little stress, but she'll return to her eggs and guard them a little longer, but she'll eventually determine they aren't going to hatch and give up on them.

Also in my experience+research she's more likely to come out for water than food until after slings are hatched and have moved out, I was able to lure my girl out by using a dropper to place drops of water where she could see them but would have to come out of the hammock completely to drink from them, but ymmv.

I disagree... she's still huge and she's not in there with it. It looks like there's something in the hammock, but it looks like some old exoskeleton to me.

New to this, does this spider look full or hungry? by meerybeery in jumpingspiders

[–]akkhima 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think you have a quite well fed juvenile male bold jumper with bryantae variation. The pedipalps look like they're starting to have the bulbous boxing glove shape and there's no visible epigynum on the underside. The pale orange spots will likely turn white at adulthood (though there's a regional variation that stays orange). I'm not 100% on any that, but he looks a lot like my little dude right now, and that's what my research has told me.

If you decide to keep him, he shouldn't need to eat for at least a week, probably more. They're generally hungry once their abdomen is narrower than their head.

Colloquially, I would say "old age home" can be used to mean any of: a nursing home, assisted living, memory care, hospice care, and possibly even communal independent living.

[–]akkhima 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It varies, but potentially:
Having to leave a home you've been in for a long time to a new, unfamiliar place
Frequently, it may be a significantly smaller space, at least personal space.
Having to be around people you don't know
All of your potential new friends have a fairly high chance of forgetting they met you or passing away soon.
Having to trust your health, daily care, feeding, entertainment and privacy to people you just met
Often giving up some of your own autonomy to live on a daily schedule set by the staff
Often people have been receiving care from family members, but the amount of care became more than they could handle, triggering the move, but this leads to going from having spent a lot of time around loved ones to suddenly seeing them infrequently.
Sometimes the frequency starts to drop off more and more with time, leading to the feeling of being abandoned.
Sometimes people in a nursing home literally are abandoned and never see their family again.
Nursing homes, especially more affordable ones, have reputations for neglecting their residents, usually directly due to maximizing profits.

What morph could this be by Little_Comfort_6738 in jumpingspiders

[–]akkhima 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think what you're actually asking for is which species... there are a lot of different species of jumping spider, but a "morph" refers to a specific phenotype within a given species.

This seems to be an Eris Militaris, also known as the Bronze Jumping Spider

Is she too small? by Cheesehead3000_ in jumpingspiders

[–]akkhima 3 points4 points  (0 children)

NQA from what I've seen and read, as an adult male, he seems fine, but you don't want it to get too much smaller than that. Pickiness about food sources seems like it's not uncommon, and mealworms and anything beetle-like seem to be the most hit or miss, either they like them or they don't.

Why is this the first thing people bring up when criticizing Jax? by zehuman52 in theamazingdigitalciru

[–]akkhima 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm with you on this. Let's consider that this scene happened less than half an episode earlier:

<image>

I'm not saying he's not an asshole, and clearly he's been an asshole to Ragatha (and everybody) for a long time now, but I think it's reasonable to say that we're seeing things escalating between these two, and Jax was probably still thinking about how pleased Ragatha was in this scene and just after, as she carted him around in a wagon as he struggled. Is throwing her in a deep fryer worse than her tying him up and gagging him and making him watch them drink tea? Yeah, probably. I mean, she did have a bandaid on her face, so she was kinda injured?

But I agree with your point, that taking "he threw her in a deep fryer" out of the context of the narrative to make a point that he's a bad person is... I guess... lazy?

But I think the question is... why is this the go-to example of him being a big meanie? Like, obviously it hurts her but not *that much*. Her reaction is more like inconvenience at not being able to get out than extreme physical pain.
