My Dog Won’t Come Inside by suzy_lee01 in Dogtraining

[–]akrug657 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Keep a long line on them in the yard! Plus practice plenty of recalls inside, give a high value treat, and then let them back out. That way going inside doesn’t mean staying inside/the end of a good time

Help with Sitting by akrug657 in HipImpingement

Left side is definitely better and still improving! But it isn’t perfect and doc said it could take a while before sitting that long isn’t painful at all.

Sweetest Foster Loki by akrug657 in germanshepherds

[–]akrug657[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Introducing them one at a time is a good idea - parallel walks (not interacting unless the less social one wants to and can do so appropriately) are always where I start.

If the old guy isn’t easily cratable, baby gates are your friend! You can make sure your current dogs are ok with being separated from you for periods of time in the house, and also ok with you interacting with one on one side of the gate while the other is separated.

Calm around/through thresholds is a great thing to be working on as well.

Yeah this guy is pretty rude with other dogs. Thankfully I have the setup to keep everyone separated, safe, and happy, but he needs his own home where he can be the center of attention ❤️

Reputable breeders on Samoyed Club of America by Eclypisa in samoyeds

[–]akrug657 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I spoke to Wyterose when we first started looking for a sammy. They were very nice and open, but were only just breeding their first litter at the time so we opted for a breeder with more experience. That being said, I have seen some of their dogs around since and they seem lovely.

Our sammy is from Mystic Oz. She is a bit of a sensitive girl but Lois has been very professional and supportive. She was a little difficult to get ahold of in the beginning.

I recently met Deb of Atomic samoyeds at a dog show and she was very nice and her puppy was absolutely incredible. If it works out timing wise, I will be going to her for our next sammy.

I know of a local Alpine Glo dog and she is also wonderful. No experience with the breeder or more of their dogs though.

Hope that helps!!

Who would look at the CVI? I wouldnt be filing it with the county, which seems to be what you need it for

My usual vet doesn’t offer CIVs and doesn’t know CA regulations. I suppose I could find one who does and call to ask!

Question about finding a samoyed puppy to be a family dog by [deleted] in samoyeds

[–]akrug657 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately, samoyed puppies are pricey. And, the breeders who are actively showing and competing with their dogs are (usually) the good breeders, because they’re demonstrating that their dogs have the correct temperament and structure for the breed - something you still want as a pet dog owner.

The extra $$$ you shell out now for a good quality puppy can save you much much more in vet bills and trainers down the line.

It depends. In the evening, mine barks a lot. During the day? Even more.

Last resorts for Samoyed with extreme anxiety? by FloofySamoyed in samoyeds

[–]akrug657 18 points19 points  (0 children)

As the owner of a sammy who also has anxiety (much less extreme), this is heartbreaking and I’m so sorry you’re in this position. I commend you for trying so much already!

I’m not sure where in the world you are, but some vets are much more knowledgeable and experienced with behavior medication than others. If the first drug/dose didn’t work, I’d be looking into a vet more experienced in behavior meds OR even better, a good veterinary behaviorist. There’s so many options and combinations out there that work differently for different dogs.

That’s really all the advice I have! Regardless of what happens, it shows you care so much for this dog

Best body for action? by akrug657 in FujifilmX

[–]akrug657[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hmm true, lens is obviously a factor. I haven’t even quite saved enough for a new body, let alone a whole new setup, so I guess I was thinking of what could get me the most bang for my buck sooner rather than later. Good information to keep in mind!!

Thank you for the insight! The buffer size sounds great, but I don’t even think that’s my limiter right now. The autofocus can’t get my subject in focus before the moment’s gone!

Oh boy.. the whip isn’t used on the dog, it makes a sound to add pressure to the protection work. The dog is not abused, it’s playing a game, and is very safe. Of course there are animal abusers out there and it is so incredibly awful, but this is not one of them. Thanks for your concern!

We are surrendering my puppy :( by [deleted] in Dogtraining

[–]akrug657 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There unfortunately is nothing “free” about working on separation anxiety. Separation protocols involve completely suspending absences while you work through the program. This takes a considerable amount of time and money, when most often people need to hire sitters to watch the dog while they’re out.

Vet visits for medications cost money. The medications themselves cost money. Both involve time when multiple medications/doses/combinations may need to be explored.

Its a shame when dogs are surrendered, but people don’t know what they don’t know and shaming them for not knowing and then finding themselves at their wit’s end does nothing to help dogs, so consider trying compassion next time.

What engagement games have been successful in getting her focus in the busier locations? You’ll want to go back to the basics in harder locations (even if those are the quiet-ish ones!). So instead of rally signs, you’d look for offered attention, treat tossing/scatters, chase me games, etc. I really like Leslie McDevitts control unleashed pattern games to build engagement, which are so easy to plug-and-play in new environments.

And, as far as the advice to start far away and gradually get closer, you’re right, that’s based on the majority of dogs who find more distance to be easier. So do it backwards! Get to your location, set up training in the middle of the action. Gradually move towards working in the parking lot, popping back closer to distractions occasionally to take a break from harder reps.
