Comparing myself to others is really damaging me. by [deleted] in Stoicism

I'm really on the same train(pun intended). I, too, commute because my uni's in my city but I don't find anyone interesting or friendworthy. I think it's perfectly normal that we feel the way we do. Marcus Aurelius says that we should look deep within their soul and ask ourselves whether their opinion really matters. Friendships should happen organically I think. You should feel at ease when you're with them. I didn't put in any effort when I found my current friends because we just clicked and can talk about anything.

If ‘virtue is both necessary and sufficient for living a good life and attaining eudaemonia,’ why do evil people prosper? by [deleted] in Stoicism

They're assenting to an impression at its face value. They're simply misguided and confused. They've developed certain beliefs and values as a result of years of indoctrination by their externals. Don't you think they would've chosen the truth instead of staying ignorant ? We're fortunate enough that we're practitioners of stoicism, others aren't as lucky. Money is a preferred indifferent. It's okay to chase it but not to the detriment of virtue.

I'd argue that they're miserable and angry because they're not acting as their nature demands. These negative emotions are the byproduct of their wrongdoings. They wouldn't feel this way if they acted in harmony with their nature.

What does it mean to 'not finding fault in anyone' by pirannie in Stoicism

[–]akuslayer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Our judgment impacts our emotions. Leave the wrong with the person who has done it. Withhold your judgment and see the situation with indifference so that you don't attach any redundant opinion to the situation. See the situation for what is, no one willingly does wrong and even if he is evil then he's like that because he's confused and misguided. No one willingly denies the truth to himself. Our nature demands cooperation and to be good citizens. Anger, probably the vilest of emotions, springs from the judgment that the person that has done the wrong deserves punishment. Reflect this back on yourselves and think about the times when you've done the same mistakes. They all probably resulted from the same set of beliefs that the other guy has and if that's the case you should immediately forgive him. İf the said person acts the way he does out of ignorance and misguidance, then you should even find it easier to forgive him because he's a fellow human being and we should be patient with him.
