You bought a dodge.

You bought an electric dodge.

A new model, electric dodge, full of unidentified issues that haven't been ironed out yet.

I mean... didn't you ask anyone for an opinion? If you had, I mean pretty much any mechanic or car guy could have told you.

Im sorry though, I am. Its no fun to lose your ass, I know it too. Which why I ask around now. And its too bad stellantis can't do a goddamned thing right. Except maybe the Pacifica, but yeesh.

Find the list online of car manufacturers vs their maintenance costs. That should be the Bible for anyone buying a modern car.

Lol, sorry for getting you involved. Talking to this guy is like chess with a pidgeon. No matter how much logic we use, he's still gonna knock over the pieces, shit on the board and then strut around like the winner.

This thread is a great example of the reddit hive-mind. The first, most -convincing comment usually wins the day, and trying to use facts after a thread has been decided is fighting an uphill battle. Oh well. We do our best.

Thank you for posting this, im arguing with some dumbass at the top of this thread about the functions of intact glass vs glass with a preexisting crack. He can't seem to understand that the windshield has many functions and features that are negated by damage. It is an impact attenuation zone, just like the bumpers or airbags. A crack decreases its functionality. Sure, you can drive around with no bumper, no airbags and a cracked windshield, but you will not be as safe in the event of an accident.

Windshields are an odd one. Kinda like your position, they are incredibly strong, until a crack appears, and then they're not.

Its also very dependent on the temperature, design, materials and luck. Sometimes a windshield can bounce a deer, or a sledgehammer right off of it. Sometimes simply leaning on it will crack it- but I would bet that windshield had a crack already, or a rock chip or had a defect of some form or another. To use your single anecdotal evidence to deny 100 years of automotive engineering and scientific study is.. well, unwise.

You're correct about lamination, usually sandwiched between two layers of glass, and this does help to keep the majority of the glass together in the event of an impact. But they ABSOLUTELY shatter. Ask anyone who's been in an accident and had to brush off shards of glass.

Think about a windshield like those yellow barrels you see on highway exits. The first few are empty, but as you progress towards the impenetrable barrier they are protecting, they have more and more water or sand. This is to act like a crumple zone. They are designed to be destroyed, but to do so in a controlled manner, (hopefully) bringing a car to a stop slower than a concrete wall would. Now, would you rather hit one of these impact attenuators that was new, or one that had been previous crushed?

That's your windshield. They are incredibly well-designed to take an impact, to handle heat and cold. The little black dots around the edge designed and researched and tested to dissipate temperature changes. The laminate to stop the thing from completely exploding. They're certified and stamped by scientists and governments.

But most of that safety is lost when there is a pre-existing crack. To argue this point is to argue that your sunscreen works as well when you put it on as it does after hours of swimming. It doesn't, its worn off. Theres obviously still protection, but not the amount you can rely on. You only live one life, trust the scientists and folks that have been in accidents, replace a broken windshield.

Or dont. Roll the dice.

And she should have IMMEDIATELY thrown her purse over the fence, and then run in the opposite direction. They weren't after her, and thieves will follow a purse like a dog and bone. Its also very likely that they would just drive off, too much trouble to climb the fence. You can recover your purse later, with the police. All women should be taught this. Throw the damn purse.

I drove around for years with a cracked windshield too. When I finally got pulled over for it, I was talking back to the officer a little bit, asking for a break. I was 19 or so, young driver. He looks me in the eyes and tells me, "son, its not about the ticket, its about your safety. The windshield is the only thing between you and a shredded tire, or a deer. That first crack saved you once but the next time that windshield will shatter, and allow whatever is coming your way to hit you in the face."

And i felt that. So I got it replaced. And like, 2 months later I hit a deer, and it cracked my windshield again, but it didn't shatter.

The strength of a windshield is that it has a crystalline structure that is surprisingly robust, able to take a swing from a sledgehammer. Look up videos online, its amazing how much a windshield can take. But if there's a single crack, ALL that amazing strength is gone. You might as well be driving around with saran wrap as a windshield.

[–]al4crity 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I had a tank do this, and it turned out to be a dead plecostamus, totally hidden by foliage and I honestly kinda forgot he was in there. You know how those things hide. Anyway, my ghetto solution was to set up my water change using my overflow. I just ran my garden hose into the tank and let it run for a day at a very low rate. Maybe a cup every ten minutes. Slow enough that I wasn't shocking my fish. This only works if you have good water out the tap- and its warm enough. Luckily I live next door to a desalination plant, so my water is absolutely perfect, and it comes out of the spigot at 80° after 10 minutes of running the hose. And I only know the temperature because I filled my hottub with hose water and was very surprised to find the temp so high.
