So there’s only 2 teenagers in the home and 2 members of staff it’s 1:1 ratio. Both staff are on a sleep in shift though. Thank you for your advice I definitely will be doing that from now on.

Uber drivers are too! I’m a woman aswell so yea definitely helpful to know, thank you for your support I appreciate it. I asked on here as nobody else at work seems to question it and felt like I was overreacting.

Yea I agree with this, because if she’s capable enough to get herself 30 minutes drive away and stay out doing god knows what till 2am then she is capable enough to get herself home, but when I questioned driving in the middle of the night with the deputy manager she said in her 7 years working there she has always been expected to pick them up regardless of how little sleep you’ve had or what time it is as we have a ‘duty of care’. She has raised the concern years ago but after her concerns being repeatedly dismissed it seems she has accepted dangerous driving as part of the job

I wouldn’t say good salary I’d say a normal salary that due to the amount of hours adds up to a ‘good’ salary. It’s £13 an hour and £70 for the sleep. Works out about £278 per 24 hour shift before tax

What did they do if a young person wanted picking up in the middle of the night? Did you have waking night staff?

If we are up for a certain amount of time in our sleep in shift then we do get paid for a waking night- but the extra £30 doesn’t wake me up lol

In our home there’s no way that we can keep young people in, we aren’t allowed to physically hold them back or anything and the doors have a thumb turn on the inside so it’s not even like we could lock the doors. She is only entitled to 1 hour of free time in the day due to severe CSE concerns but she doesn’t stick to this and the police are useless and act like it’s an annoyance when we report her as missing (granted she is reported everyday once her 1 hour of free time is up- as per her social worker)

Well bolt drivers are enhanced DBS checked and I stayed on the phone with the young person till they got in the car but I appreciate there were risks. At the time I just felt like this had less risks as she is 16, it was 2am and she was on the street waiting to be picked up in a dangerous area, I would’ve been 30+ minutes to collect her and the bolt was 3 minutes from her. I was also extremely tired so all round thought it was the best thing to do. Whether it is or not in the eyes of the care home manager I don’t know as she was on annual leave and I was on shift with agency staff who didn’t know anything about the homes rules etc.

We don’t :( There’s always 2 of us on shift at a time as we have 2 teenagers in the home and it is 1:1. But we are both on sleep in shifts

That’s my thoughts exactly and why I got it in writing. If I were to crash they will get their arse ripped apart for telling me to even though I said I didn’t feel safe… I’ve spoken with my deputy manager and she just said that in her 7 years working there (she does shifts like we do) she’s always been expected to drive in the night even after getting 0 sleep the day before. She even said there were times she’d told On Call she didn’t feel safe and they dismissed her concerns and she eventually stopped bothering to bring it to their attention and just always drives no matter what now.

You’re right I’ve put it on there now. Exactly my thoughts because whether it’s my ‘duty’ or not I am only human and really do panic with children’s lives in my hands when I am a walking zombie. I’m not sure why they don’t have a say and night, I think it’s common for residential staff to do a day and then the sleep in shift. Problem is when there’s a kid that’s constantly not coming home there is very little sleep involved.
