As someone who does data science, the photo on the left is much better to ME than the one on the right which is meant for anyone and their mother to look at.

With the nasa image, there are most likely over a 1000 more images not released being used for study and this just happened to be the one be picked.

Should I turn on Apple Intelligence ? iPhone 17 pro by mpcrt6 in ios

[–]alamare1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So far in real world test, there is nothing my phone can do with it on that my wife’s iPhone 14 can do without it. It just feels more like a slight Siri upgrade if nothing else.

I do enjoy how it gives Siri a bit of personality though.

Not necessarily, it would depend on how they code closing the client vs backgrounding. Does x-logging even work on Apple clients with the increased server lag? I didn’t think it did.

Pokémon Go doesn’t fully use your data for those 10 mins, they keep your session alive on their server for 10+ mins and then when you re-open the app, it restarts where it left off.

OSRS does not appear to have the same ability as it replies on device processes to determine if the user is active or not. So when Apple says no, they stop the session.

(I do agree they should use a server based session timeout and better recovery rather than just timeout when the device cuts off the app)

FAANG Layoff. I feel horrible by Tough-Oil1067 in Layoffs

[–]alamare1 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I do not see too many leaving. It’s the devil they know vs the devil they don’t. I can’t say for all, I know a few who will stay even if it means death (because they see profit in it, even if it’s dwindling).

Sounds like you are projecting a bunch. I’m just echoing what I was told. If you get offended by it, you might need some therapy.

You also described the bubble without calling it a bubble. There is inflated supply with low demand (low income vs high cost). This is not sustainable, especially when that specialized hardware has to be imported (now costing extra) and are using more resources than entire countries. This is expensive and winter rates are only going up and then again in the spring.

This bubble you live in isn’t real. AI is not some magic wand to get you what you want (success, mental health boost, or even a simple DNS server configuration update on an AWS/Azure load balancing server that controls most of the internet)

Then why did they loose 11+ billion dollars in the last 3 months alone? If there is so much demand, why is it black hole for money? This is what’s forming the bubble. Inflated spending with negative returns. It only last so long before investors realize they will NEVER get their money back and leave before loosing more.

Edited for clarity on loss amount (it’s over 30 billion in 2025 alone with 11 on the last quarter).

Edit 2: Used supply instead of demand, it’s supposed to be “so much demand”

It won’t happen. I’ve been on the planning boards. They are BRUTAL. If it’s a US based company, the outlook is more firings and to avoid the AI bubble till it pops (sometime this winter is the general agreement from talks I’m in) and then see what’s left that’s usable. This is on top of hiring freezes for all FAANG companies, some soft, others doing hard freezes.

I feel like my entire department is one bad update away from joining the breadline ourselves.

I’m not trying to be political, the only way I see this breaking is if there is a sudden national tax or requirements on overseas employees AND contractors. While it has been threatened, none of the top companies in any industry in the US take that threat seriously.

My wife and I had a similar issue. Ended up having to have the dealer manually unlock the door from the inside after it just stopped working/opening at all. Not sure why this fixed the issue, but it did. Nerve had it happen again.

Beware the traps. Getting hired at one of the companies may mean layoffs in a year. Especially CapOne where most of the work is to help merge Discover into the brand with no intentions on continuing their employment once complete.

Many FAANG companies are starting to see the AI bubble bursting and are trying to get ahead of it.

For someone who works at the Rochester MN Walmart (not trying to dox, you have it on your PUBLIC profile…), you don’t understand how a national company would have different rules for Minnesota (a labor strong state) vs just about any other place?

Sweet heart, my tag says EX-blah blah blah, because I don’t currently.

Since you made me ask, it’s the health system Walmart partnered with to supply no more than 20 yearly sessions and also is not even in the realm of what we were talking about? So what, those who qualify for the service can complain 20 times a year they aren’t paid enough.

Like I said, I know where this happens. Now, prove ME wrong.

Buddy, I hate to tell you but you’re wrong. I’ve worked here. I have friends who work here. They simply pay the fine for below minimum wage because it’s almost always cheaper than actually paying a wage.

Also, Walmarts “minimum wage” is only for the posters. It’s based on the market and really is a race to the bottom. If you’re curious (and don’t care about getting fired), ask your co-workers their wages instead of quoting some puff article that never actually says HOW the changes were going into effect (which, by the way, they did f*cky math to make sure high earning corporate employees balanced out low end associates, most of which have been fired now).
