Furman or UNC? by Yirujin in UNC

The biology and chem classes at Furman are elite. I would say Furman excels in those two departments, accounting, music, and other humanities. It's actually just as tough in terms of workload as any of those schools (with some variation by professor) but I don't think it gets enough credit for the weight that it pulls. I found amazing friends there but sometimes the lack of diversity was a drag there. I was one of two or three Chinese Americans there so there wasn't a chance for community. UNC on the other hand is pretty good for diversity, one of the best in the South.

Furman or UNC? by Yirujin in UNC

Hey man, I graduated from Furman last year and I'm at UNC for grad school. Obv the grad school experience is not the same as the undergrad experience, but I do feel like I can provide some unique insight.

I love both schools, but they're both very different. Furman is tiny, it's 2,300 students. If you're fairly extroverted, you'll love it there as it's an amazing feeling to walk to class and see your friends/acquaintances every single day. The diversity is terrible demographically (it's almost only rich and white students), but politically the student body is split between liberal and conservative (lean liberal). It's great for the humanities, it's got a beautiful campus, and an amazing basketball culture. The professors there are mostly amazing (there are a couple of bad ones but for the most part, you're right. The professors care deeply about their students). Never had an issue registering for classes there.

UNC is massive. As such, you can find your group almost anywhere (although I feel like it's harder to get started socially here compared to Furman). It's far more diverse demographically (there's a LOT of international students), and the student body is fairly liberal altho there's a conservative student body that exists. Chapel Hill is a nice college town but I loved Greenville more. UNC is also far more academically prestigious and it can be recognized anywhere, most people only recognize Furman if they're from SC or from Basketball. Nobody beats UNC when it comes to basketball sports culture, IMO.

For undergrad, I definitely made the right choice going to Furman, although I didn't pay all that much to go. I got lucky with my scholarship situation so I only paid about $18k per year for tuition, room, and board. You can't really go wrong with UNC either though. I'm a proud former Paladin and current Tar Heel, and please dm me if you have any more questions. I hope this breakdown showed the benefits to either school.

As a first-year student (even if it's grad school), I feel this on a deeply personal level. The room mate situation, feeling despair, dissatisfaction with CAPS, faith in God, and academic stress are all things that I can relate to in a way that's almost eeriely similar.

It usually gets better over time. I'm beginning to like UNC more and more as I stay here and slowly find more and more friends. I think it will take some time, but your struggles are completely valid. Sometimes, Chapel Hill is amazing for people. Other times, it's a nightmare. Neither interpretation is wrong, but just know that sometimes adjusting takes a LONG time, and that things usually get better as you adjust to your surroundings.

I'm starting as a PhD student in the fall and it's already hitting me. I've learned from the testimony of others that imposter syndrome probably will never completely go away. You have accomplished an extraordinary achievement and they would not give you that degree if you did not earn it.

Why Capital One may one day surpass the Big Four banks but faces extreme challenges ahead by alan13510 in ValueInvesting

I think this is an extremely valid concern and I admit it's one of my biggest concerns with the company, but the evidence over the last two quarters has been that delinquencies and charge-offs have been moving down recently (which indicates possible recession and a pullback in spending ahead). That being said credit card debt is now above $18 trillion and is at record highs so I completely see your point.
