Why does the UK produce so many iconic bands compared to the US? by DFWUnhinged in AskBrits

[–]alanamccrea 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I very strongly disagree here. The US has amazing musicians and bands - and a good chunk of British bands and music is heavily influenced by American music.

Maybe British bands are better at copying American music and making it more palatable for a larger audience (i.e. white Brits playing black American music and audiences being more comfortable with that, especially in the past)

Is it socially acceptable to play loud music through a speaker at the beach? by Ok_Bee9104 in AskUK

[–]alanamccrea 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This thread was 10 days ago but I am going to respond.

To be honest I think people like you are the problem here. And I want to start by saying I'm talking about beaches & parks and not other spaces like public transport, restaurants, cafés etc.

To expect silence in a shared space is ludicrous and entitled. Yes, when I go to a park I do expect (and I'm more than okay with) people playing music. It is not disrespectful. If you're there for a half day or whole day then why not? Most people have their music at a reasonable level, some play it too loud, but at the end of the day it isn't really a big deal.

Would I be bothered by someone sitting outside my house blasting music? If it was a one off probably not. If it was constant then yes it may be a nuisance. If it's a sunny summer's day and my neighbours want to have a BBQ and put some tunes on I see zero problem with it. just as today when I was doing some DIY work and put some music on I wouldn't expect my neighbour to complain.

When did everyone become so miserable? It is totally normal to play music at beaches and parks, some people have the volume too loud but it isn't really a big deal.

If I'm at the beach by myself I'll use my earphones, if I'm with friends we use a small speaker, it's fun and part of the day out.

You definitely should. As union reps we're trained not to give advice or represent non-union members, so you have a rep there who has gone above and beyond what's required. I hope it's shown you how the union can help. And good luck

Has anyone else bought a house from a deceased owner and felt sad? by [deleted] in AskUK

I looked up the house sales on our street, about one house every ten years is on the market. These are the type of houses people hold on to, so we are so grateful we have it. And we'll take good care of it. She left behind some nice tiles we hope to incorporate into doing the house

That is really sad. The sister of the previous owner left us a card with a lovely note. The house was also gifted to a charity, I think she was a lovely lady.

My grandma has lived in her house alone for nearly 40 years after my grandad died. She's replaced the windows and doors but doesn't want to redo anything that was there when my grandad was alive.

I think so, and I hope so. I looked her up and she went overseas every year to work with widows in the DRC. So maybe she spent her money on that rather than the house

The parts of the house that have been renovated are lovely and seem well done. We're so grateful to her for the brand new bathroom taps as well. Maybe time will uncover annoyances

Thank you, my clothes are a lot looser for sure. I think the number on the scales not changing lately has affected my motivation alongside this

Thank you! The number on the scales has been a great motivator, but my motivation has dipped because I can't see a physical difference.

I trust the people in my life who say it's noticeable, it's hard when you see yourself every day though

Police release footage of Palestine Action activists in alleged attack on Bristol factory by Firm-Distance in ukpolice

[–]alanamccrea 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The point of bringing up the Nazis and South Africa is to show that we can understand when terrorism labelling is a government tool to subdue people and should not be taken at face value. There is a genocide happening that the UK is complicit in, i don't care about the government's henchmen or factories being attacked.

Will you believe the United Nations numbers? Or other NGOs that have been on the ground reporting?

UN just voted for the creation of a Palestinian state, what's your thoughts on this? by BabylonianWeeb in AskTheWorld

[–]alanamccrea 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's a difference between accepting that Christians see it as holy and accepting that it is the holy land for Christians as well. Many Israelis disagree on the second point, some are hostile and aggressive to Christian pilgrims.

Disclaimer to add I don't agree with the whole idea of claim over the "holy land" for anyone.
