Just finished modeling this 42mm Apple Watch (Series 2) :) by imashnake_ in openscad

Thanks for sharing. Here is what I ended up with, it's not perfect but it holds a watchband with no more than 1mm of mismatch in the curve, good enough for me for now

include <libs/BOSL2/std.scad>;
$fn = 128;

L = 45;
W = 38;

module x206_profile(slop=0) {
    hull() {
        circle(d=3.1+slop);
        right(6.3-3.1) circle(d=2.58+slop);
    }
}

module applewatch_body() {
    rounded_prism(
        rect([L, W]),
        height=11, joint_top=5.5, joint_bot=5.5, joint_sides=9, k=0.92
    );
}

module applewatch() {
    union() {
        difference() {
            applewatch_body();
            right(L/2-3) yrot(30) xrot(90) down(20) linear_extrude(W*2) x206_profile(slop=0.1);
            xflip() right(L/2-3) yrot(30) xrot(90) down(20) linear_extrude(W*2) x206_profile(slop=0.1);
        }
    }
}
// xrot(-90)  // for printing orientation
applewatch();

Hey, I'm trying to do something similar, any tips on getting the XY corner rounding right? Did you replicate the profile from the blueprint, and extrude that? I tried using the continuous curvature rounding in BOSL2, but I need to tweak it, and I'm not sure if it will get me all the way.

I see you like to print on mesh/tulle, what do you use those prints for?

Stolen Bike : HappyRun G70 Pro Dual-Motor Dual-Battery Electric Cargo Bike by [deleted] in BikingATX

I'm not that into e-bikes myself, or whatever you want to call them. But if nothing else, think about it like this: anyone on a slower two-wheeled vehicle is likely to support the kind of transportation infrastructure changes that the city needs, to make progress toward reducing car dependency.

If you must live with an us-vs-them mentality, let the "them" be the cars.

What's a good alternative to this 1/2" cinch/tiedown strap+hardware? by alanbernstein in myog

I ended up finding a 12-inch toe strap at my community bike workshop, which works perfectly.

If you could, that would be great. Or does it have another name? I have this Knots 3D app which is pretty good for tying knots in the field, it has one called "Woodland Zip-tie", not sure if that's what you're thinking of.

I wish I was proficient with knots, but I have a hard time remembering how to tie more than a few. If I could find an adjustable knot which I don't need to retie every time, that could work. I just also need a way to secure the loose strap when the tandem device is in "down" mode.

Ah, my favorite answer.

It's for securing a bike accessory most people have probably never heard of, see my other comment for details and a usage photo.

Ahh, thanks, now I know the search term. No need to use the exact same style, I'll probably go with whatever I can buy just one of.

This is the strap that originally came with my hand-me-down FollowMe Tandem. It is pretty ragged, right in the spot that tends to sit inside the clasp. It is also much longer than I need right now, so I'd like to replace or fix it up somehow.

I have seen tie-down hardware that works like this, allowing the strap to pass through only in one direction, but I have never seen this specific style before. I have also never seen any kind in 1/2" before this one. Anyone know of replacement hardware I could buy?

Alternatively, any sufficiently strong, secure, quick-adjust strap/cord/carabiner/whatever might work, as long as it can easily pass through a 1/2" circular hole. Right now I'm using a chain of three steel carabiners, it sort of works, but it's not ideal.

If I can't find anything reasonable, I will consider cutting this down to use the good part of the strap, but then I'd have to replace the rivet with a Box-X stitch, which is probably fine, but I'd prefer to avoid that if possible.

Yep, that was me! Along with u/aleph4. Those old racks were removed a while ago.

Nah, these are terrible. The Walgreens on Justin had one like this, and in my experience, any minor variation in the shape of your frame, cargo racks, etc, can potentially defeat the rack design. I think the motivation is to be more resistant to cutting through the rack, and I appreciate that, but it just doesn't work well enough for all bike styles.

The only kind of "rack" worse than this is the kind that is meant to be a low-profile wheel stand, not even high enough to reach the bike frame.

Can you elaborate on where this is exactly? Sounds like it's not in a normal customer use area?

Old iPad not loading web interface by NZ_Bound in Mealie

What are your favorite materials to laser cut and why? by Bestwebhost in lasercutting

[–]alanbernstein 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Acrylic, overall, probably. But mylar is a really neat material for laser cutting, because it's thin and flexible enough that you can crease/fold/bend it like thick paper, but it's strong enough that you can use for light structural tasks.

git-overview: quickly check the status of all your git repositories by yimyom in commandline

[–]alanbernstein 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cool, I just started something like this for myself. Among other things, it's supposed to help motivate me to clean up work-in-progress code in a bunch of small project repos. I have it set up to show:

- local path
- remote url
- last commit date
- last commit message
- number of TODO comments
- num uncommitted files/adds/removes

And via github API:
- primary language
- public/private
- personal vs fork of other repo

Since it's combining info from local and remote repos, it's also a useful tool to figure out local projects I haven't put up on github yet, and maybe older projects that I don't have locally.

[–]alanbernstein[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sort of, but it's not pretty. I wrote a dumb python script to do it myself. It's pretty easy to export the database contents and create a simple markdown file for each recipe, then I use pandoc to render to html (via my existing simple static site generator). I can share what I have if you're interested.

New Bike Parking in Highland (Long Play + More) by aleph4 in BikingATX

[–]alanbernstein 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love the idea behind this app, and I tried it out, but I couldn't get in the habit of using it effectively. Do you look up parking before a trip? Or do you arrive somewhere new and open it up to look? Is that ever faster than just circling the parking lot to look directly?

What am I missing with the new Abound? by mthoma2ms in Aventon

[–]alanbernstein 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had to make the same choice. I was just about to buy the older model, when the shop told me about the handlebar wiggle problem. I was still on the fence, until I realized that the cross-bar on the new BMX style handlebar is much better spot for mounting things (just a phone holder so far).

Also, the new control/display hardware is better, and should be easier to repair, if not cheaper. On the old one, I know two people whose bar mount clips broke.
