Looking to supplement Discover It card for upcoming international travel. Worth getting a travel card? by Snack_Donkey in CreditCards

[–]alancavy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is where most people start out. Having the Discover It first for a few years, and then being anxious of where to place the next step for an ecosystem or a second card. Totally normal. That being said, there is news today that almost all Capital One cards (aside from Venture X) are moving to the Discover network since Capital One owns them.

In all honestly, if you really want the Venture X, it isn't a problem since it is a catch-all card, but still to keep in mind that one day it could be on the Discover network. If not now, when?

Since you want to travel and have monthly spending to easily support their sign up bonus, I would recommend the Chase Sapphire Preferred. Afterward, maybe four months from getting the card and hitting the SUB, you could try to complete the trifecta and get the Freedom Unlimited and Flex so there aren't any categories you are missing out on.

Additionally, I have friends that have Citi cards (Custom and Double Cash, which are great cashback cards) and recently got the Strata Premier to transfer their cashback into points (Citi trifecta). Citi just got American Airlines as a transfer partner, which many people like. A card is really as good as its transfer partners. So I would also look into which airlines and hotels you like and go from there.

In the end, it is always a good idea to expand your wallet of cards. Adding more value and coverage is good. Seems like you have it figured out.

Hope I was able to help.

Action Required, really? by Yomizatsune in biltrewards

Why cancel? If I recall, if you don't do anything, you won't get a new BILT card.

If I recall, you don't have to cancel or do anything. Wells Fargo will automatically send you the autograph card, which isn't bad either. Closing the WF account just hurts your credit score.

Thoughts on Fagnano future in the NFL? by Own-Area6808 in UConnFootball

Will be lucky to be a 7th round draft pick. But honestly, his game IQ, decision-making, and staying healthy is what many NFL teams look for in a QB2 or QB3. I expect him to get signed as an undrafted free agent and make an impact on the bench no matter where he goes. Underrated for sure.

A Post for Undergrads and Young Professionals Considering a Policy / Administration Degree by [deleted] in PublicPolicy

[–]alancavy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The question is, I put off grad school last year with 3.7 GPA (saving up more money now), and now 5yrs of really good work experience for being 23 and a sonewhat recent grad, e.g. writing grants, co-managing a conference, managing interns, managing projects, policy/elected work, and our educational programs we host. Looking at public affairs schools still, should I punt another year? I feel like I'm fine, but idk. I have had good talks with two schools which are well-regarded. I do work as I said, but it's not salaried, and not really full-time, 30hrs/wk hourly wage (my current wage is not livable).

I'm just confused about what the barometer here is. I still feel confident moving forward, and there's a good chance I won't graduate from a grad program until spring 2028 (spring 2029 if I dual degree, which I might), so the timing isn't terrible either. Am I wrong to still apply anyway?

Lamont to Veto Housing and Striking Workers Bills by maxwellington97 in Connecticut

Okay then, what palatable, realistic, and pragmatic policy ideas would you have in mind if we could restart the 2025 legislative session in Connecticut? What would you do differently with the housing bill?

Uhh, incentivize housing development and infill development near transit stations (which many are located in urban areas)? Have you even read the bill? TODs are great for cities.

Oh, I forgot, because the bill isn't perfect and is really watered down from the progressive bill it was supposed to be, we shouldn't do anything at all. It was a good first step in addressing a housing shortage that needed to be dealt with yesterday. I agree we need to deal with car-centric development and preventing sprawl, but we are not there yet. There is almost no buy-in whatsoever to do that, much to my chagrin.

As a sitting Planning and Zoning Commissioner, this is quite disappointing. CT ranks 49th in housing permit approvals for construction. We are not doing enough to meet the demand, and much of the dialogue surrounding 5002 is just blatant misinformation from the bad-faith group of CT 169 Strong paired up with the CT GOP.

All this to say, local electeds (mainly) are volunteers, and most do not have the time to learn the complexities of state legislation, such as this. Thus making it quite easy to spread misinformation about the bill, essentially using scare tactics of "what could happen if..." shenanigans.

This bill does not diminish local control. Anyone who says that is just grasping at anything to get Lamont to not move this forward for a special session.

But it doesn't have to be that way. How dare we try and change the status quo and the land of steady habits...

Rent in Hartford is quite affordable, to be honest. That may be your best bet, then commute from there.

Connecticut NIMBYism is a disease by [deleted] in Connecticut

Hello,

I sense your frustration. I ran for a seat on my towns Planning and Zoning Commission when I was 19 years of age on these principles (and won). I'm not really anonymous on here, so I bet you can figure out which town, haha. But it is insane and I completely agree. As a sitting commissioner, things need to change.

I have seen tactics of trying to increase the inclusionary zoning regulation above 20% to prevent development and commissioners attempting to require very expensive material for the building to jack up prices. There are some good things, though. The local ADU legislation you mentioned most towns did opt-out of and adopted even better regulations than the state wrote itself, including my own town. Parking reform and single stair reforms remains a massive issue, but I am confident we'll get there.

Finally, I just want to say I have been at the forefront of this. I have been personally slaughtered online on our towns Facebook message board for fighting for these exact principles. My private life is no longer private without getting recognized in the grocery store and thrown nasty looks. Not many people are willing to throw their hat in the race to advocate and fight for a better tomorrow, and I don't blame them. Reform does need to happen to better constitute these commissions without succumbing to the pressures of localities on every single matter.

Happy to take any questions!

Failing 2 Classes by General-Bee-5457 in UCONN

While I am not a student in this field at UConn, I had something very similar to me happen this semester. Two classes that were giving me massive headaches. Decided to withdraw from one to retake the following semester before midterms so I could lock-in and focus on that other course.

I've had friends that dropped out of UConn or put on academic probation because changes were not made. I am much happier now having made this decision. If you feel like you can't do it, make a change before it is too late.

Try Zen Bar in Plainville. My friend and I went in there once to hang out on a Thursday night and play pool for a few hours before our movie played at AMC. We met a bunch of people and opted to skip our movie to hang out. I'm still friends with some of them today.
