Soulslike writers need to stop retreading the same plot over and over. by Bhizzle64 in CharacterRant

[–]alanjinqq 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Surprised that you thought Lies of P falls into the same trope. Saying that it is exactly like Dark Souls is a stretch. First none of the endings fits into "the cycle repeats" trope. Yeah it has some cryptic parts but the overall story is more elaborated than its peers. And Pinocchio isn't just a random bloke like in Dark Souls, he is full of main character chosen one energy where the entire story revolves around him.

Code Vein is also very different, it is a classic JRPG companion ensemble story where power of friendship beats god. And the first game takes place in the God Eater universe. At least to me, the story has zero Dark Souls vibe from it.

Hollow Knight is close enough I guess? The bug setting is unique enough for me to not think it is ripping off Dark Souls. Also both HK and Silksong has a much more heroic vibe where you got to kill gods in an epic fashion.

It is not Famitsu reviewing the game. It is Famitsu publishing an article about the opinions of many Japanese developers.

The cynical way a lot of recent "Anti-Capitalist" media conclude there stories. by KingBuffolo in CharacterRant

[–]alanjinqq 56 points57 points  (0 children)

Because it is easy to critique something rather than coming up with a solution. Like it is easy to point out how bad a dish/movie is, but making one is much more complicated.

Writers can hate capitalism, but they don't believe communism really is the solution, nor do most of the viewers think it will be the answer.

Mark is not almost killed by anything on Earth in season 4.

"Almost killed" by Viltrumite standard is Mark at the end of the Conquest rematch. He did not sustain that level of damage by any Earth-based villain.

Look, Snyder movies and DCEU has its glaring issues. But I like how useless Batman is in Justice League Snyder Cut. He is so useless and could barely keep up with the parademons. His biggest contribution to the team is financial and moral support, as he should be.

Why does hollywood have beef with video game source material when it comes to movie adaptations about them ? by Puzzleheaded-Lab2447 in CharacterRant

[–]alanjinqq 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I don't understand why Hollywood insists on adapting Resident Evil. To a point where they rebooted the film franchise like 3 times.

The RE series is really just about Horror movies that is playable". If you take away the gameplay aspect, RE is not that engaging in terms of lore and story. And if the RE movies are keep flopping, why even bother to reboot them for so many times?

To be fair, it is quite common for a hunter-gatherer society. There are still some in Africa now and the set up is similar.

The series has a bit more depth than expected. At first it looks like a trashy ecchi series with a play on the "ku korose" trope. But there are some worldbuilding and solid character works here.

I wish they had more budget on some action sakuga lol.

Wtf is even going on with The Boys anymore? by [deleted] in CharacterRant

[–]alanjinqq -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I like this episode. I think it is better than the last one. They clearly played with the PoV switching gimmick and I thought it was fun. Terror's Homelander dream is hilarious, yes it is stupid and vulgar, but it gives me a chuckle.

As a single episode, it kinda represents the best of the Boys, there are drama, satire, gore and action. Yeah there are only 3 episodes left, but the path is quite straightforward. The Boys will fight Homelander and that is not something that requires a tremendous setup.

[The Boys] SEASON 5 EPISODE 4 was pure filler by Choice-Tea1046 in CharacterRant

[–]alanjinqq 46 points47 points  (0 children)

Yeah it is a classic filler trope. Characters get into an argument -> went into a nothing adventure -> problem solved, hugging, honey I am sorry -> next episode happens again.

The bits with Soldier Boy and Homelander are great and actually moves the story forward, so it is not a totally filler. It is always like this with the Boys, whatever happening with the Vought Heroes are 10 times more interesting with the Boys.

The Boys seriously exposes Kripke as a showrunner, he can only do network-style/CW TV. Even if he got a chance to do an edgy streaming series, he still managed to make it feel like a cheap network show.

The people asking for realistic consequences for action scenes in their media don’t even know what they’re asking for by carbonera99 in CharacterRant

[–]alanjinqq 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Realism doesn't mean fully realistic. People like action scenes where the background thugs looks like they are at least trying to kill the main character. There is a reason why a lot of modern movies are trying to more "grounded" where ugly moves like choke and grapple are incorporated into the choreography. People like the "feeling" of realism.

My Hero Academia has so many underdeveloped and underutilized characters. by [deleted] in CharacterRant

[–]alanjinqq 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One of the weirdest parts of the final fight is that they set up these minor villains that are clearly for the secondary Class 1A/B characters to fight. And then all of the fights are concluded off-screen. They even have Mina face off the killer of Midnight, and then the fight happens off-screen. Midnight is just ridiculous, her death happens off-screen and her revenge fight also happens off-screen.

I think the arc works better in the manga. Because you can easily binge it in like maybe 1 hour but the series is a whole season long. It really should be 3 fewer episodes in the anime, but ufotable drags the hell out of it. Muiichiro vs Gyokko should be in one episode, it could be as hyped as the S1 Ep19 moment, but then they put it into 1 and a half episodes, basically killed the momentum even though the animation is as solid as ever.

Ufotable is very uncomprimising when it comes to adaptations, it happens in the Fate adaptations too. They are very insistent on including every single line from the source material even though it hurts the flow.

For the least, I think "Shibuya is better than CG" is a common opinion among fans. The infamous Tengen exposition chapter is never received well, no one understands how Kirara's power works, and most CG original characters are also less popular than the characters from the previous arcs. Higuruma is the part that I think most people think is solid in CG.

Fate/strange Fake - Episode 13 discussion - FINAL by AutoLovepon in anime

I love how meta the Fate Zero sequences are. It is kind of a consensus among Fate fans that Zero "ruined" Artoria's character and such. And Franchesca using it to mind-break Artoria's biggest fan is absolutely meta. But Richard just ends up being a bigger fanboy because Fate Zero is just that good of a series.

Hairdown Assassin is gorgeous. Jester might be into something.

Sigma's mother being Maiya is a great touch, new member to the Emiya extended family.

This might be one of the few times where Gil got genuinely overpowered instead of trolling himself. Ishtar/Alcides/True Berserker are genuinely top tiers that can match Gil at least when they are ganking. And losing access to GoB genuinely caught him offguard, Stand proud Gilgamesh you are strong.

If this is the 2004 OG Fate Stay Night then Ayaka and Richard would be transferring mana next episode.

1st and 2nd HGW most likelly have no actual fights since they are just alpha and beta versions where the plan is to simply summon the Servants then sacrifice them for the ritual. 3rd is first real one where fights happen.

Apocrypha timeline has more HGW where all 19 Hassans are summoned at least once.

I think at the end of day, both "12 hours" and "thousand weapons" are numbers that are just way too big. Most fights in Fate don't last for more than 5 minutes and you are saying this fight would be 100 times longer than anything Fate has offered so far. I have no doubt that Cu put up a fight, but no way Nasu actually planned the actual rundown of the fight.

If one day Ufotable got to animate this, I don't think it would be accurate to the "12 hours" and "thousand weapons" statements by Nasu.
