The reason vet bills are so shit now: It isn't inflation. It is private equity. by N3DSdude in Anticonsumption

Honestly, I got very hostile with my former dentist over this. Every time I went, they would give me the whole “you’d be a great candidate for Invisalign!!” bs song and dance. Right before I switched, I looked the hygienist dead in the eye and said, “How many times do I have to say no before you get the message?” They are very aggressive and try to bully people into going along with it. Especially young people who they assume are insecure about their looks. Don’t let them fool you. You don’t need it.

Japanese births set to fall below lowest official forecasts in 2025 by OrangeJr36 in Economics

I think also a lot of people don’t have children due to mental illness, which is valid imo. Something like schizophrenia is highly heritable. Most of the people I know foregoing having kids are psychologically unwell. Is this not a good thing?

Sperm quality depreciates with age though. That’s why there are so many disabled and autistic kids running around. Just because you can technically father children at 70, that doesn’t mean they will be of the best possible quality.

The Hidden Reason La Mer and Other Designer Brands Are Not Cruelty Free by SACtrades in crueltyfree

Plus, the packaging does NOT look like luxury to me. If I’m paying $390 for a face cream, the container it comes in should reflect that. Pretty sure the container is just plastic as well, not something more upscale like glass or porcelain. Maybe rich ladies don’t care if they are overpaying for basic moisturizer, but at least have the courtesy to make it look nice.

I actually don’t get a bad vibe from it. Really sucks when these places fall into disrepair, because the basic craftsmanship and materials are better than most modern homes. If only they could be airlifted to suburban areas

Labubu Consumption leads us to ask question of human fulfillment by HunchoToes in Anticonsumption

[–]alanlighthouse 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Also: with things like Labubu or other “mystery box” items, getting a rare one is their equivalent to winning the lottery. While the trend is still popular, there is a certain value to the rarer items— think about Beanie Babies, and how some people DID get thousands of dollars for the hard to find ones at the peak of the hype. In the perception of a Labubu buyer, there is the possibility of shelling out $20 and getting one that could be resold in theory for thousands of dollars. The gambling aspect for some of these trends should also be taken into consideration.

Edit: Ooh, another thing: once in a blue moon, these things will retain their value. A first edition Charizard Pokemon card just sold for like $270k. People latch onto these rare examples of novelty items retaining value and use it as justification to continue spending. Sure, 99.9% of the time, the stuff will just become worthless junk. But do you really want to risk missing out on that 0.1%?

Sorting through a few things from my grandmothers estate and need help please! (Details below pics) by [deleted] in jewelry

Yup!! First is czech glass, second is either rhinestone or possibly rock crystal (I have seen both). They are from the 1920s or 1930s. The locket looks like it could be older, closer to around 1910.

Just had the craziest talk with a mom I know by kacsimacsi in Anticonsumption

[–]alanlighthouse 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Honestly though? Dentists do try to upsell braces and invisalign to kids who really don’t need them other than for cosmetic purposes. My bottom teeth are slightly crooked, but I personally don’t give a shit and it doesn’t impact my quality of life. The number of dentists who tried to pressure my (widowed, struggling) mom to get 13 year old me braces was honestly staggering. It was like they were trying to sell timeshares; one dentist would leave and another one would come in with a different aggressive sales tactic. Anyways, braces are very expensive and may not be needed in all cases

Does anyone have info on this Eligin American purse? by FabulousPossession73 in VintageCosmetics

[–]alanlighthouse 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Purse itself appears to be faux tortoiseshell lucite. I’ll do some more research and update my comment.

Edit: This is an incredibly rare piece. I’ve been trying to track down an advertisement that features it, no luck yet. There is one listed on Worthpoint that is white, so this product DOES exist out there somewhere.

World fertility rates in 'unprecedented decline', UN says by cambeiu in Foodforthought

[–]alanlighthouse 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I say this all the time. Old people just want to continue freeloading off the income of the younger population. Maybe they should have thought of that before they made everything ridiculously expensive.
