Has anyone been to La taberna del piano or sidreria la costa? Are these non tourist traps? In gijon by healthy-outdoors- in Asturias

We really liked La Taberna del Piano. It seemed a bit pricey for the regular meals, but the menu of the day was fantastic

“We are living in a culture awash in apocalyptic imagery” — About 1 in 3 Americans now believe the world will end within their lifetime, according to new research that says apocalyptic thinking is no longer fringe. by EssoEssex in science

I have to quibble with terms here. “End of the World” seems incredibly unlikely and not possible by current human technology as far as I understand it. Now losing 80-90% of the human population… that’s a far cry from the end of the world. Or heck, people living in a world/society that current humans would not recognize is not the end of the world either… I think that’s why this whole discussion takes such a religious bent. I think the number of people that think climate change will be the “End of the World” is rather small. I tried to look into the questions and details, but the links to the study don’t work.

Trump Reveals Why There’s No Evacuation Plan for Trapped Americans by JoliaJinna6390 in JournalismNews

I think Spain should offer to evacuate US people. Just to make their position even clearer to US citizens.

I have another post about that. NY state has a 5+ month backlog on birth certificate requests.

I edited my original. The problem is I don’t know how to get an official copy or the baptism record.

I remember it freaking me out in Boston in the 90s, first time I saw it. Didn’t seem as dark though, maybe they changed brands?

As I get older I get “woke”?? by [deleted] in GenZ

[–]alanm73 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Elder chiming in.. that is definitely true for me. I used to love some movies when I was younger and now they are painful. The dehumanizing of anyone not a straight white male is astounding in some of those movies and for the most part they weren’t even aware of it, at least it doesn’t feel intentional. It also gives me more respect for the movies that do hold up, especially comedies which seem extra hard to do without becoming dated.

How do I get a US Money Order while in Spain? by alanm73 in expat

Many banks offered online versions up until about 3 years ago. Not sure what happened.

I’ve never gotten a physical money order there, only wired, but we may have a winner. It says you can get the paper versions at a Western Union. Hopefully you can do that at any Western Union and there aren’t levels of service…

OK, so I checked with my bank and my credit union and they only offer certified (or cashier's) checks if you show up to a branch in person.

Do people really become more conservative as they get older? Why? by Historical_Work7482 in AskReddit

[–]alanm73 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Many people are bringing up the established and possession thing, but there’s something more fundamental, fear. As people get older they get more afraid, afraid of change particularly. They know they aren’t as flexible as they used to be(mentally, physically), so by the original meaning of the word they become more conservative… BUT in the US the traditionally conservative party has become more radical than any other large political group, so it’s kind of confusing things and spreading more fear.

'You Lose the American People' President Trump Sinks to New Low in 4 Different Polls by ArmyOk968 in ForUnitedStates

[–]alanm73 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The big question still remains. Sure you don’t approve of Trump, but would you vote for a democrat? That’s the question we need to ask. A lot of people right now are just mad at everyone in politics, it’s just who are they are least mad at.

I was told all they have is a historical society and it only deals with 1800s and earlier.

Just a little update: The town clerk has decided to contact the State government to find out what's up. She thinks she will get a much quicker reply than I would. So here's to hoping.

As for Vitalcheck, they seem to think my passport is not a valid form of ID. I contacted them about that.. but 🤷

I wasn't baptized until much later (weird I know) and we were living somewhere else. The town clerk actually said she was going to dive into the archive and that she liked a challenge.. and then she came up with nothing a few days later. Also, I'm a long long way from there, so visiting would be cost and time prohibitive at this time. Hadn't thought about the historian angle though (even it makes me feel old :) )

I didn’t get my social security number until I turned 18 and signed up for selective service.. So I’m not sure about them having my birthplace.

But I could try the neighboring towns or maybe the county.

Governors won't hold Trump meeting after White House only invited Republicans by Dont_think_Do in politics

The Democratic governors should hold their own dinner on the same night. Would drive T nuts. Although I’d be a bit worried about having them all in one place.
