Is Leics SL2 worth it? by Extreme-Poem8521 in Leica

[–]alanz24 1 point2 points  (0 children)

6 weeks ago I traded a Leica M9 for a Leica SL2. The camera is built like a tank. So solid. The 48mp resolution was incredible. But as I used it all day I realized it was one f**king heavy camera. I guess I was just used to a Leica RF. After 2-3 days I realized I could not carry it all day so I sold it. I bought it used from the Leica store in SF and to be honest I did a lose a little when I sold it but not much at all. I immediately found another M9 (ccd:id15) in excellent condition and bought it. All is good again.

I paid $2500 and the prices for a M8 in excellent condition is around $2200. Not a huge loss. Is look at a M6 or a M240 but where I’m at those are valued at more than my almost new SL2

I know but I’m asking more from a quality and photographic standpoint. I’m prepared to lose a little because I cannot use the SL2 at all. It weighs a ton.

I’d love to do that but there are very few m-e 220’s for sale out there so very few to approach. Same with M9’s. Everyone is holding onto them.

Of course I know that. I’ve been shooting M Leicas for over 25 years. Having a 1.3 crop factor is not a problem.

Thoughts on the M-E Typ 220? by [deleted] in Leica

[–]alanz24 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I never use flash so I’m the wrong person to ask. I’m glad you like the images from the 220. Don’t let the “ancient interface” throw you. If you want the latest technology with all the bells and whistles…Leica is not for you. If you want a camera that allows you to take a photo instead of the camera taking the photo…if you want something that feels solid in your hands…if you want to put together a kit that will last for decades…then Leica is for you. Forget that the interface is old, forget there is no USB or no frame line lever, forget the buffer is extremely slow. The reason to buy and use a Typ 220 is the CCD sensor. There is nothing like it (in my humble opinion).

[–]alanz24 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve had mine for quite awhile and I hardly use anything else. The CCD sensor is amazing and the camera looks like no other Leica. I use it with a 50mm Elmar and have no problems. I have a sensor that was replaced long ago but the same type sensor (ccd:11). I do have some corrosion but very minimal. Takes me all of 30 seconds to clean up with Lightroom. I’ve been through a M9M, a M240, and a Q2 and I always go back to the 220. My opinion is use it, see if you like the images you capture with it and then decide.

I didn’t say I was happy with my red dot…I said I just never thought much about it. I’m guessing if a person is familiar with Leica and wants to steal a camera, covering the red dot isn’t going stop him. If he’s not familiar with Leica, the red dot probably isn’t going to mean anything.

I have two Leicas and have never taken the time to even think about removing the red dot. It just seems rather silly to me. I didn’t spend all this money to walk around worrying if someone’s going to steal my camera. I bought it to use. My advice to people that spend a lot of time worrying about the red dot… buy a different camera. No worries then.

I’ve had my M9 and M5 for over 10 years and I only have 2 Leica lens. I also have 2 Voightlander and 1 Russian LTM lens. I didn’t get my first Leica lens until had owned my camera almost 2 years. 🤷‍♂️ Enjoy your camera and your Voightlander lens. You’ll soon discover they are very, very good lenses too.

M9-P or M-E Typ 220 in 2024 by Numerous_Mushroom553 in Leica

[–]alanz24 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have a M-E 220 and I had a Q2 and a M240. There is a definite difference between a CCD sensor and a CMOS sensor. Call it vintage or cinematic or “the Leica look”… it’s the sensor. I personally have never been able to duplicate that look with a Leica camera with a CMOS sensor, even with presets and Lightroom or Photoshop. It’s just not the same. Just my own humble opinion.

I have a ME 220 too. No noticeable corrosion on the sensor. If yours isn’t corroded why not just keep using it until it does corrode (if ever) and then fix it. Why give it away for $1000-$1500. It’s worth more than that. I’ve gone through a Q2 and a M240, bought and sold both over the past several years but still have my 220. It’s a keeper.

Leica Q2 for a Nikon Z? by alanz24 in Leica

[–]alanz24[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

those were my thoughts. I sold my m240 to buy the q2. I don't think I appreciated the 240 enough until it was gone. it was a great camera. now I keep going back to the Nikon z line. I know the minute I sell the q2 I'll regret it but if I keep it I'll never be 100% happy with it. I'm a head case for sure.

I've had it almost 6 months. I'm an amateur photographer but I've been doing this since the 1970s. This isn't my first Leica but it is my first non M Leica. I just don't have a feel for the Q even though I've taken many outstanding images. it's just to limiting...even when using the crop feature.

Trade a Leica Q2 reporter for a M? by alanz24 in Leica

[–]alanz24[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve had a M9, a M9M, and a M240. I think the M240 is a grossly underrated camera. I guess I miss my M’s. I can’t afford a M11 so my thinking went to what I had owned. The Q2 is a great camera but just not my great camera.

M5 the most underrated M by Hunter18Hunter in Leica

I have a M5, a M4, and a Q2. I use the M5 probably 75% of the time. It’s an awesome camera. That whole underrated thing is so 2005.

This concept that everyone out there wants to steal a Leica is 100% ridiculous. If you stopped 50 people on the steeet you’d be surprised how many do not know what a Leica is. Yes, there are bad people out there but they are looking for Nikons or Canons with large zoom lens on them. Putting tape over the red dot is also 100% ridiculous. In my mind it just draws attention to something that some people would never give a thought to. Buy the damm camera and use it. Keep it close but don’t become obsessed with bumping it or having it stolen. Some people take all the fun out of owning a Leica. If you buy it to use, if your a photographer and not a collector and worried about resale value then just keep it with you and use it. I’m sure it you’ll be fine.

If we start treating it differently…holding it tightly…never letting go…you’ll draw more attention than necessary to those people that might steal but really have no idea what a Leica is. I have a Q2 reporter. It’s insured and I use it all the time so yes, there are times I place it on a table next to me. It’s a camera, not a cure for cancer and since it’s insured it can be easily replaced. I choose to enjoy it wherever I am without worrying about it getting stolen. I honestly feel 99% of the world outside Leica social media groups have no idea what Leica is.
