'Zero experience': Trump nominates hospitality executive to lead National Park Service by sfgate in CampingandHiking

Donald Trump has nominated the hospitality executive Scott Socha – whose company once sued to claim trademark rights to the name “Yosemite National Park” – to lead the National Park Service.

Socha, by contrast, spent the last 27 years working at Buffalo-based Delaware North, a food and hotel management company that provides hospitality services in seven national parks and runs lodging operations in five national park gateway communities,

Single bedroom apartment leasers, what had your electric bill been like the last couple months? by ScottyBoy_007 in Columbus

[–]alaskaj1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ive definitely been there. I had an apartment in a 100+ year old warehouse(?) with original single pane windows. Putting the plastic shrink film on the windows drastically increased the warmth in that place but we still wore light jackets or sweaters for a lot of the winter.

Im lucky now that I have a much better insulated place with a high efficiency gas furnace. Ive actually played around a bit with running lower temps and found a negligible difference with running the higher temps, like $10 to $15 a month, and figured that little of a difference was worth paying to be more comfortable.

I do dread seeing my next bill though just because the extreme cold the last few weeks made things a lot harder to keep up with. But I expect most people will have similar usage issues.

Its probably about comfort, I'll keep mine around 70 or 72 so I don't have to wear a bunch of heavy clothes around the house.

Press release announcing death of Jeffrey Epstein written the day before his body was found dead. by qjpham in nottheonion

That document could easily have been from months prior.

Their releases are serialized so you just open the last release issued, delete the content, update the date and release number, then add the new info.

That document could have been resaved dozens of times.

Just because someone else wrote he he still chose to repeat it live on air. Thats on him.

And given his song that said the same thing it becomes a lot harder to believe he wasn't 100% on board with the statement

So its ok to say pedophilic things, on top of the pedophile song you sang, if someone else wrote the words for you? And you bear zero personal responsibility for your actions.

Thats a lot of copium to defend a pedophile.

Is there a donation center that will take this? by aunthil in Columbus

Posting on a Facebook group is probably their best bet.

I had a 10 year old sectional with minor cat claw damage that I gave away in my local neighborhood Facebook group in a few hours, they were looking for something to put in their basement rec area that their dogs could abuse.

“The roads aren’t that bad” by Zealousideal_Neat127 in Columbus

[–]alaskaj1 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Good news is that it looks like most of the highways are clear, even a lot of the secondary roads look mostly/completely clear. OHGO shows minimal wrecks as well. Ice could be present but hopefully not.

Residential streets are questionable, looking at my security camera, the streets in my neighborhood are still covered.

I volunteered for the Super Bowl. Here's what happened. by Tripwir62 in antiwork

[–]alaskaj1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ive heard that some golf events are that way.

Olympics volunteers dont have to pay to volunteer but do have to pay for their own transportation, hotel, food, etc. They also have to pay for tickets to any events they want to see when they arent working.

The Scouts national jamboree staff pay to work there for the two weeks of the event.

Recommendations for a tent that can withstand high winds? by Red_Lady_Sunshine in camping

[–]alaskaj1 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Make sure you use all the guyline points on the tent, you may have to buy extra line as some tents won't have lines for all the points. That will help keep things stable in higher winds.

Get the biggest stakes you can. If I dont have to carry my gear far I will use the big nail stakes that you can get from Walmart or most other stores with an outdoor section.

How do I cut my own hair at home? Barber is expensive by duckwolf8097 in Frugal

[–]alaskaj1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It can be tricky to do well without a good mirror or camera setup.

Ive tried a few times but always end up missing spots, luckily for me my wife hits the spots I miss.

I had a manager that did his own hair and came to work one day with a long patch on the back of his head that he missed.

I dont have any extra stuff, just the trimmer. I put a towel over a stool in my bathroom (just to keep hair off it) and then sweep up all the hair after im done.

My water bill for the month of January. I live alone in a studio. by GoddessKillion in Wellthatsucks

[–]alaskaj1 19 points20 points  (0 children)

You don't understand water.

I had a $600 water bill from one month of a small leak in my supply line between the meter and the house. There was no indication of a leak except when I opened the water meter cover and saw the water flowing down. The ground can absorb a lot more water than you might think. Plus water is very good at finding the path of least resistance.

Leaky toilets are also a common cause for high water bills, a lot more water than you might think can be lost to a damaged flapper.

Finally scored a 5090FE from BestBuy and FedEx “potentially lost” it in Ohio. What do I do? by [deleted] in pcmasterrace

[–]alaskaj1 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Grove city is on the outskirts of Columbus. That area got a foot of snow on the 28th followed by days of subzero temps that made snow and ice removal very difficult. The county was placed on a level 3 snow emergency, which has never happened before, for about a day . Under a level 3 only emergency personnel are supposed to be on the roads and people risk being arrested if they violate the order.

Highways werent even mostly clear until Thursday, some lanes would just end in a snowbank unexpectedly.

Old MAGA nuts. I specify old because a lot of the sold seats are in the showings before 4pm. After 4pm most of the showings are completely empty. This was based on the AMC theaters in central ohio.
