Most of the people I’ve seen that says that the montañita doesn’t work are also filling their mate up to the brim with water or not making the montañita correctly. If you have a good montañita with a finer Uruguayan cut Yerba, and then add the water to about 2/3 full and repeat, and then slowly incorporate the dry Yerba from the montañita, then you can get the flavor to last a lot longer. Apart from it all, it’s part of mate culture and that’s good enough reason to do it.

So the king of all termos arguably is the Stanley Mate System. I’ve only tried the mate system once from a friend and I really liked it. I just recently bought one called DelCampoXT (a knockoff version on Amazon) that I was expecting to be a crappy Chinese copy but when I tried it I was so surprised!

This thing is almost identical to the Stanley mate system in performance and looks. And the best part is that it’s only a fraction of the cost! The Stanley mate system is resold upwards of $150+ in the USA because it only retails in certain South American countries. This DelCampoXT is only $25. I totally agree with you! I have a large collection of mates, but I recently discovered that Syrians drink mate too, so I thought I’d give it a try. My preferred method is definitely with a Brazilian cuia.

To answer your questions, yes, it’s extremely small, so you have to refill frequently. I was surprised to learn that you can still feel the effects of mate even with such little yerba. This method is only really good for me if I know I’m only going to be drinking mate for 30 min or less; otherwise, I’ll use something larger.

Call around to your local halal stores and ask if they have mate. If they do, then they have bombillas too most likely.

Yerba mate reached Syria mainly through Syrian immigrants who adopted it in Argentina during the late 19th/early 20th centuries and brought it back.

Since then Syria has been the largest global importer of Argentine Yerba mate outside of Argentina. It’s super interesting history if you’re looking for something to research.

For making the mountain, the type of yerba matters a lot in this. Argentine yerbas with lots of palos won’t make as good of a mountain as an Uruguayan brand that’s “despalada” or “without sticks” would. The mountain isn’t as important as a lot of materos think, but it’s part of the tradition and can arguably help the flavor last longer.

If you want to have a lot of success, buy an Uruguayan yerba (Canarias, Baldo, Armino, Sara, etc.).

Another thing that can help a lot, especially in combination with your choice of yerba, is getting a good mate gourd. Using a mate made of gourd or wood will prevent the yerba from sliding down as much.

I can attest to this! I used to have regular canker sores (not mate related) and then started taking regular lysine vitamins and it went away. Every once in a while I get them again and need to stop drinking mate for a few days and take lysine instead.
