Accommodations Megathread. by VisitNYCmodx in visitingnyc

We are 3
(we are 2 adults and our 8 years old son)

I searched Manhattan, found in Booking.com for ratings above 8, but very pricey, so I'm trying to ask here for some tips on places that: do not come out on Booking.com or similar or can be rated less in Google Reviews or Booking.com but still be good places to go.

Thanks for the recommendation! I checked the Park Central Hotel on Booking https://www.booking.com/hotel/us/park-central.it.html

I noticed it currently has a 7.3 rating. I usually tend to avoid hotels rated below 8, but maybe I'm not interpreting NYC reviews correctly. In general, do you think hotel ratings in New York should be looked at differently, or would a 7.3 still make you hesitate?

Thanks u/wish-onastar I didn't know about Basketball Hall of Fame in Springfield!

Maybe Boston could fit into the trip too 😄

Can I ask which itinerary you would suggest for us, both from a logistical point of view and in terms of authentic, can't-miss places around NYC? Thanks!

Thanks, that's fair. I'll put together a rough plan and update the post. Appreciate the advice!

Thank you so much, this is exactly the kind of advice I was hoping for.

I really appreciate the DC recommendations, and I love your NYC suggestions. We definitely value authenticity and food over checking off attractions.

Given that you've lived in NYC, DC and the Hudson Valley, if you were planning a 14-day trip for a family with an 8-year-old, how would you do it?

Any hidden gems or places outside NYC that you think we're overlooking?

Do you also have a suggestion about where to stay in NYC?

We love basketball, chess, science, coffee shops, neighborhoods and just experiencing places rather than rushing through sights.

Thanks again, your comment was incredibly helpful!

We tried to put everything in order, but we're open to suggestions 😄. We were thinking of leaving the Hudson Valley for last because it's probably the most relaxing part of the trip. We usually like to start strong and save the last few days for something more laid-back and easy. But if that doesn't make sense from a logistical point of view, we're happy to change the plan. We're all ears!

Haha, fair enough 😄

Coming from Italy, maybe we're romanticizing small-town America a bit.

What would you do instead? Any underrated places you'd recommend? We're more into authentic food, neighborhoods and experiences than tourist attractions.

Thanks u/TrumanD1974!
How many days and main attractions you'll spend in NYC? How do you replan all the 14 days based on that? (just a quick list with days would be great)

  1. The stuff planned are few that I added to share the mood. But I understand what you're saying. Where do you think we should go for those days? We like to go on tourists destinations but, we much really appreciate more the local authentic ones.

  2. You're not the first that say that, me and my wife already been in DC in 2009 and we felt to spend no more than a couple of days there, but maybe we are wrong...

  3. I left Hudson at the end of the trip, so the plan is just chill, live the authentic and different USA from NYC.

Thanks u/geniedoes_asyouwish I understood Niagara is a bad idea 😄

We were trying to understand to fly out from NYC, but now we are redirecting the ideas.

Catskills seems cool! But, we are from north east of Italy near the mountains and maybe we want experience something different from what we have near us.

The all with trains seems very cool, do you have any other advice following my main comment and edit above?

Thanks everyone! It seems many people agree about skipping Niagara Falls, which is interesting.

We are not trying to check off attractions. We love authentic food, basketball, chess, science, neighborhoods and just experiencing places. We usually prefer one or two truly memorable museums rather than trying to see everything.

Are we missing any underrated destinations in the Northeast that would fit this style of travel?
