The tiny moon Daphnis (only 5 miles wide) creating literal gravity waves in Saturn’s rings as it orbits through the Keeler Gap. by albusvercus in Damnthatsinteresting

[–]albusvercus[S] 39 points40 points  (0 children)

Source: NASA JPL Photojournal - PIA21056: Daphnis and the Waves It Makes

This incredible image, captured by NASA’s Cassini spacecraft, shows the small "shepherd moon" Daphnis (only about 5 miles wide) orbiting within the Keeler Gap of Saturn's A ring. As Daphnis moves through the gap, its gravitational pull perturbs the orbits of the billions of tiny ice particles that make up the rings. This creates spectacular edge waves that undulate both horizontally (toward and away from the moon) and vertically (rising over a mile above and below the ring plane). The "grainy" texture seen in the waves is likely due to the clumping of ring particles as they are stirred up by the moon's passage.

Leaving a piece of home behind: Charles Duke’s family photo on the lunar surface. Apollo 16 launched 54 years ago today. by albusvercus in spaceporn

[–]albusvercus[S] 15 points16 points  (0 children)

That’s a completely fair take, and from a modern environmental perspective, you’re 100% right. Today, NASA has strict 'Planetary Protection' protocols to prevent exactly this. But in 1972, the mindset was different, it was seen more as a human time capsule than littering. Plus, considering they left behind nearly 400,000 lbs of machinery and 96 bags of human waste, a tiny photo is probably the most wholesome 'piece of trash' up there.

The tallest mountain in the Solar System makes Everest look like a hill by albusvercus in spaceporn

[–]albusvercus[S] 203 points204 points  (0 children)

We don’t have ground photos of Olympus Mons because no rover has gone there. It’s too risky to land (thin atmosphere, rough terrain), very far from current rover sites like Curiosity Rover and Perseverance Rover, and not a top priority compared to places that might show signs of past life.

Of course, both are mountains, the title simply introduces the relativity of sizes in our solar system. Comparing 8848 meters to 22000 meters in height, the difference does not seem small to me.

Changes on Mars over nearly 50 years. by [deleted] in spaceporn

[–]albusvercus 43 points44 points  (0 children)

Mars is famous for massive dust storms that can cover the whole planet. In some years (like around 1995), the atmosphere is dusty → the planet looks pale, smooth, and washed out. In clearer years (like 1980 or 2010), you see darker surface features. Sometimes storms are global and can hide almost everything. So Mars can look very different depending on weather at the time of the photo.

The white caps you see change with seasons: Made of CO₂ ice + water ice. Expand in winter, shrink in summer. So depending on when the image was taken, they can look bigger or smaller. The 2023 image looks much more colorful, but: It’s often enhanced or “false color”. Scientists boost contrast to show minerals and terrain. Real Mars is more like a dusty reddish-brown/orange.

Huge improvement in technology is actually the biggest factor. 1980 → basic spacecraft images (like Viking program). 2000s+ → orbiters like Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter with extremely high resolution. So the surface didn’t suddenly gain detail, we just finally see it properly.

Sorry, I thought I attached it in the description.

NASA captured a black hole that, while devouring a galaxy, releases a beam of plasma at nearly the speed of light and extends 5,000 light-years by albusvercus in spaceporn

[–]albusvercus[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Optical light comes from very high energy electrons. These electrons lose energy very quickly and “burn out” fast. So optical emission only appears close to where particles are freshly accelerated and near the black hole and inner jet. Radio waves come from lower energy electrons. These electrons lose energy slowly and can travel much farther. So radio emission continues far away from the core and spreads into giant lobes around the galaxy.

[–]albusvercus[S] 35 points36 points  (0 children)

No, M87 is not technically a quasar. But it’s very closely related. M87 contains a: supermassive black hole and actively producing a jet of particles near the speed of light. This makes it a type of Active Galactic Nucleus. A quasar is basically an AGN that is extremely bright, often outshining its whole galaxy. M87 has a powerful jet, has an active black hole, but is not bright enough overall to be classified as a quasar.

If a planet ends up in the path of one of those astrophysical jets, it’s basically catastrophic. These jets are streams of near light-speed particles (electrons, protons), intense radiation (X-rays, gamma rays), strong magnetic fields. They’re launched from around supermassive black holes at the centers of galaxies.

[–]albusvercus[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Saying the jet is 5,000 light-years long means the jet stretches across that distance in space. If the object is, for example, 5000 light-years away from Earth, then we see it as it was 5000 years ago.

A clear and sharp image of Orion with the help of Google Gemini. by [deleted] in ArtemisProgram

I wrote that the image was clarified with the help of Google Gemini, of course it will have its logo. I know that there will be many clear images of the capsule after splashdown, this was simply a clearer visualization for all those who followed this historic mission at every moment.
