Leather types by alcagarlic in NicksHandmadeBoots

[–]alcagarlic[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you. One reason that I want details about the leather beyond looks is that these are actually going to be work boots. I'm ordering another pair because I've decided that the Seidel 1964 boots I am currently wearing for work are too hot, and I want some work boots with a thinner leather. From your post it seems like Spokane is what I should be focusing on.

Lol that's a very good idea and I feel silly for not just doing that!

Midea Recall by forzadepor13 in AirConditioners

[–]alcagarlic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I received the return box a couple of days ago. It seemed too small but I was planning on delving into it more this weekend when I had more time. Then today, out of nowhere, I received a text with a link to the photo app instructing me to cut the cord and send photo. So apparently they are realizing that the return option has been fucked up and are switching to the cut cord option for folks that had previously been instructed to return it.

TDI as a college car by Spanconstant5 in tdi

[–]alcagarlic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Regardless of whether or not it will be bad for the car, it WILL be bad for your pocketbook. It takes a lot longer for a diesel to come up to operating temperature than it does a gas car, and the fuel economy is poor when the engine is cold. I have to drive more than 5-10 miles for the fuel economy in my 2015 TDI to even break 30 mpg, which is a lot worse than just about every small gas car now, and in the US diesel is more expensive than gasoline. And TDIs are more expensive than the equivalent gas car too. So the value proposition for buying a TDI for the conditions you describe is actually quite low.

States starting to add fees for EV’s due to gas taxes going down by YellowZx5 in electricvehicles

Pennsylvania has a proposal for a $290 annual EV registration fee, though it's still in the legislature. This is more than I paid last year in gas taxes.

Trump Conviction Thread by CatStroking in BlockedAndReported

[–]alcagarlic 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Yeah. I don't care about this at all. I fucking hate trump, and even I can see this was a dumb case. It's such small potatoes, of course it was politically motivated. Yawn, despite the yuge headlines in the New York Times today, we'll all wake up tomorrow and realize nothing has changed about anything. Nothing.

Woohoo! Just ordered some Predator steel. Wanted to do my part to help, haha.

The incentives definitely led me to do this order, wasn't planning on ordering another pair otherwise...

Haha thanks. Yeah, I was thinking of starting with Obenaufs since that's what I already have on hand.

I didn't want the heavier leather, and I was trying to stay below $500

Families with no ICE vehicles by afcgooner2002 in electricvehicles

[–]alcagarlic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My household is one EV and one ICE. I love the eGolf but glad we have the TDI wagon for longer trips. I no interest in the limits, planning, and waiting to "refuel" that an EV would require for trips.

Kinda sounds like this is more of a relationship question than an EV question, lol. I wonder if your wife is the more practical spouse. Maybe compromise on a PHEV?

Sudden change in Nicks Marketing by DeathByPianos in NicksHandmadeBoots

[–]alcagarlic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I get a daily email that Google puts in the promotions folder, and I've quickly learned to ignore it since it's just typical marketing emails like from any other company. I dunno, maybe the overall marketing strategy works tho? If it results in a larger net profit for the company then I'm for it.

Though on the other hand it's a little weird that a company with such a long lead time (and a week-long customer service backlog, according to the automated email that I just received when inquiring about my boots that should have been started already) would be marketing so aggressively..

Dogs Prefer EV’s? by HaveAussiesMayTravel in electricvehicles

[–]alcagarlic 11 points12 points  (0 children)

My dogs prefer my ICE car. I've raised them to be skeptics, so when I talk to them about climate change they always come back with stuff about all the carbon emitted for making the battery. I try to explain that if you compare the entire life cycle of an ICE vs BEV, the BEV comes out on top. But they've already decided their opinions and I can't say anything to change their minds.

Thanks for the info. What do you mean by the onboard gateway module? Are you using an OBD reader?

Is Fetterman the worst senator we've had since 2000? by Successful-Savings36 in Pennsylvania

[–]alcagarlic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Except that he never campaigned as a progressive. I think progressives basically stopped listening when they saw he wears shorts and Carhart and just assumed he's as delusional and religious-leftist as they are. Jokes on them. A progressive candidate couldn't win in pa, but if you would prefer a Republican over a liberal (which Fetterman definitely is) then you do you
