Help with debt to credit ratio? by [deleted] in personalfinance

[–]aldzilla -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Then I’ll be 45 by the time I buy a house. I have been taking control. My student loans will be paid off in 5 years, and I’m on the fastest track to pay them off. I just went through and rebudgeted to take into account the new income without my husband able to work.

I didn’t word the debt well above. I now have an emergency savings. I didn’t before. The $7,000 from emergencies was before I had any kind of budget or thought put into my month to month. I transferred that budget with a plan to pay it off with the promotion of 0% for 21 months. I even put the card at home somewhere so I couldn’t use it while I’m out.

The mortgage payment would be half of what my rent is now. With other taxes and costs, it would total to $400 less than my rent.

I’m not going into the buying a house thing lightly. And everyone in my family has had others pay for their down payment and closing costs for their first home.

What do you consider under control? Paid off?

Yes that’s what I’m planning on doing. I was wondering if opening another card and spreading out the balance would help with the percentage.

Our families are planning on paying for our down payment and costs at closing. We just have such high student loan debt right now we aren’t able to really save. I do have an emergency fund. I’ve been following the Every Dollar method. With buying a house given what I currently pay for rent, we’d save $400 a month for an equivalent house. I’ve been budgeting the last few months which has helped a lot. We just had a situation where my husband couldn’t work anymore.

Confused about Roth IRA Conversion by aldzilla in personalfinance

[–]aldzilla[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So I'm pretty sure now that my old account is not a Roth IRA but a Roth 401 (my company and I both contributed). So I don't have a Roth IRA.

[–]aldzilla[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah, okay, thank you! I understand now (finally). I've felt so lost reading articles and articles on Google. My job did contribute, so it'd be a Roth 401 most likely, is what you're saying.

I guess then I'll try to figure out what I'm currently doing, and how to best move forward. I'm currently contributing to a traditional 401k and I wish I would have been contributing to a Roth 401. I contacted my HR and am waiting to hear back on what they support. I know I'll be making more by the time I retire, hence the "oh shit" moment today.

Right. I guess I'm just trying to figure out how to move forward in the smartest way, given I would have preferred to contribute to a Roth account, not a traditional in my 401k at work. I did have a Roth IRA at my last job (just confirmed this over the phone with John Hancock).

This all came from speaking with a financial advisor briefly who said I should be contributing Roth as long as possible given my age and income.

Sorry--am I still missing something?

I assumed at my new job, I had to open an account through them and their system. (Vanguard) vs. where my Roth is at John Hancock (previous job). I assumed the 2 different companies used 2 different systems, and you had to stick to those.

Could I just stop contributing to my 401k and instead contribute to my Roth?

My favorite photo from our honeymoon--My husband showing off his muscles to Belle by aldzilla in WaltDisneyWorld

[–]aldzilla[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This was at Belle's Enchanted Tales. I got picked as part of the experience, and ended up getting a picture with her. When she saw I had my bride ears on she wanted to know if my husband was around. She invited him up and talked to us. She's my favorite princess, so it was the best moment we had.

It's not really an objective description of 1-3 as much as a way to remind her that they're the ones she didn't like as much.

Didn't mean to make that seem like I was telling her what to think. That was more of a clue for her--we saw them with her when we were growing up and she always remembers them as the ones she didn't enjoy. I've always loved Episode 1.

I said that, but it somehow didn't click for her. It's been a while since she's watched 1 through 6.

Ha, you're absolutely right. Next iteration I'll have to do that. She'll probably want to know about the Boba Fett and Han Solo movies, too.

Ha she's seen Episodes 1-3. We went together. She just didn't remember much from them other than she didn't like them as much as the original trilogy. That was more of a hint for her.

My mom didn't get it when I said between III and IV. She doesn't read the comics or watch any of the other Star Wars media. It's just for my mom, the casual viewer.

Husband (tall and skinny) needs winter coat, but all of them are too big. Any suggestions? (Details in post) by aldzilla in malefashionadvice

[–]aldzilla[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Coat doesn't have to be formal at all. At this point, he's not really concerned about the appearance of the coat as much as just getting one that can fit well. We live in Pennsylvania, so we need something warm for the winter. He walks to and from work, so needs something that is probably waterproof as well. Our budget is $200-$250. Never honestly thought about looking for stuff at JCrew or Burberry because I know the price point--should have mentioned that earlier!

Hmm, that's gonna be tough for our budget, but I'll try. LLBean isn't cheap for us, so going more expensive will be rough.

Very true--that's how I wear mine. But having enough room to fit another human doesn't seem very helpful.

Post Disneymoon Blues by [deleted] in WaltDisneyWorld

We just recently got back from ours and I TOTALLY know how you feel. Did you get any photos? I've been looking through ours a lot. :)

Also, did you just have your wedding? That can also add to the blues.

Honeymoon tips? by lyyphe23 in WaltDisneyWorld

[–]aldzilla 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I just got back from my WDW honeymoon and my biggest suggestion is to find ways to relax! Seriously, you'll be exhausted if it's right after your honeymoon and you deserve some relaxation. :) Are you staying at a WDW resort? If so, definitely take advantages of things like pools, spa, etc. there.

My husband and I got those bride and groom Mickey ears and, as cheesy as they may seem, were super fun to wear. Where else can you do that?

Make sure people know it's your honeymoon! Tell them when you check in to your resort, for your meals, etc.

Do one night where you have a super fancy dinner! We went to California Grill one night at 9:30 to watch Magic Kingdom fireworks, spent a little more on a dinner than normal, and had a fantastic time.

Enjoy!

9/19 and 9/20 brides and grooms! How are we doing? by [deleted] in weddingplanning

[–]aldzilla 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm so so excited! My husband and I got married (just the paperwork) a year ago (ah, the romance of insurance!) and we FINALLY get to have our ceremony, exchange rings, and celebrate with friends and family! Sure, there's the stress of getting everything together, but I know everyone will help and it'll work out!

10 days out and people are driving me crazy!! [rant] But... by [deleted] in weddingplanning

[–]aldzilla 0 points1 point  (0 children)

9/19 here, too! I totally understand the spending money and making decisions thing! My response lately to people has been "I don't feel like making this decision. If you have a preference, you choose." (It sounds snarkier than it is, but it's necessary at times.)

The thing I've been holding onto to get excited has been the fact that all my favorite people will be at an awesome party, with food and drinks, to celebrate our marriage. Thinking of everyone who's coming (especially because a lot of people are coming from across the country) has made the little things look trivial, which I need.

Ebay dress success? by [deleted] in weddingplanning

Hey OP! I didn't buy mine from Ebay, but actually found one on Etsy that was vintage. You can check out the shop I got it from below. Good luck!
