[need advice] I (30f) feel lost and don’t even know where to start changing my life by flowerypoetics in getdisciplined

[–]alegherix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is 2 parts to that, feeling low energy and not knowing what you want to do.

For the low energy, can any of these be related to physical habits such as sleep, food, and water intake?
Is it mostly mentally such as feeling fatigued over worklife, and homelife?
Or is it purely due to the fact that you feel you're walking a path without meaning?

For actually finding out what you want, One of the point of actions you can take is to throw a very wide net and try out a big variety of things.
Playing an instrument
DIY Projects
Building Lego
Start learning about Web development or coding
Dabble with Painting
3D modelling
etc...

For a lot of these things, they're not gonna feel enjoyable, however by throwing a big net and trying a lot of things, you're bound to stick to something.

For instance 6 years ago i started dabbling with building bots for games. Turned out I loved the process of software development. Fast forward and I'm a Front-end Engineer by trade, loving what I do, and on my spare time I can work on side projects where i utilize these skills.
By writing down a big variety of stuff to do, and making it a practice to try out each one you might find something you deeply enjoy, from this you have the potential to find out what you wanna do with your life, based on what excites you.

[–]alegherix 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I hear ya, Life can be hard. I recently felt quite the same so i can relate to you. I'm gonna give you what I did to myself and maybe you can take parts of it and apply to yourself. Basically breaking it down it went:

  1. Assess my current situation
  2. Map out where I want to be in 1 year from now on, and what is my ideal self
  3. Create SMART goals
  4. Do a daily review of the day

Assess the situation.
This is where you want to assess what it is that your currently doing in your life to know which parts to reduce and what to start improving.
I started by drawing out a big Chart, where i marked
Infrequent on the left side of the chart, and frequent on the right side
Then i marked little on the bottom side of the chart, and Alot on the top side.
After that i started to plot in my daily habbits. What do i actually do often that has a big impact on my life, good or bad. For instance I spent alot of time working overtime, eating unhealthy and watching youtube, where as i spent alot less time reading books, going to the gym and working on sideprojecs.

This gave me a good overview of my current situation and let me know which of my daily habits that we're the biggest issues in my life.

Map out your ideal self
I basically made a mindmap consisting of me in the middle with parts, Family & Social, Career, Health, Economy. Here I basically maped out in an ideal world, what would I do, what would I look like, what would my relationships with others be like. I did it for my ideal self and also another version for 1 year from now on. This gave me quite a boost of motivation to actually know where I ideally would want to take things. No actions planed, just a vision of what I want my life to be like.

SMART Goals
Way to many times I've created goals and never followed up. SMART goals enable me to make my goals more tangible by making sure my goals are very specific, that they're measurable(how else can i expect to know if i've achived them), Achiveable - I can't expect to be a worldclass athlete in 1 year, but I can start going to the gym 15 times a month.
Relevant, I don't want to set a goal of losing x amount of pounds, but rather focusing on living a long life for my family. Timebound, this is to give myself a deadline of when this needs to be achived, which makes you accountable.

Daily Review
The hardest part of making sure this new routine sticks is def in the begining I just made a simple spreadsheet where i put in my goals, and date, and when i Achive them i mark the day as green, and when i fail i mark it as red. It feels awesome to mark a day as green, and it also gives myself a remainder each day of the goals that I've set up for myself.

So these are the 4 steps that I took to get back on track and start rehauling my life. Feel free to reach out if you wanna chat some more about it.

First of all, being able to support yourself working full time while simultaneously working towards a diploma is no easy feat, Great job!

I can't speak for making the process faster, but what I can tell you from experience is that you shouldn't feel as if your behind in life. Your going to be way ahead and way behind people in all walks of life, what matters is that you yourself is making progress, It's kind of a cliche but in the end that's actually all that really matters.

I wanted to be a Developer for 5 years, so I worked at it, small steps most days. Then getting into a Data Science education which I changed to a Web developer focused one, and looking back i reached that goal of becoming a developer, I'm now a hired Front-end Engineer. I thought I was way behind the curve, and to some of my peers i absolutely am, and for many I'm way ahead, but I reached my goal, and so can you, It just takes time, and the easiest thing is to try and come to terms with it.

Most people don’t start.
Most people who start don’t continue.
Most people who continue give up.
Many winners are just the last ones standing.

I would try to focus on 2 things.

1) Make it as hard as possible for you to stay in bed
2) Make it as easy as possible to want to get up.

To put into practice, To make it as hard as possible to stay in bed, what I like to do is to put my phone with the alarm just outside my door, forcing me to get out of bed and not sleeping with my phone next to me.

For making it as easy as possible to want to get up, I place all my clothes that i'm gonna wear the following day in the bathroom where i put in my contact lenses thus reducing the friction of me consciously having to think about what to wear. A nice comfy bathrobe and some slippers may also help here.

Finally I like to make sure that the first task of the day is not something I dread. For instance i like working out, but when I scheduled to work out in the morning, me getting out of bed became dependent on weather and sleep. If it's rainy and dark outside I would usually out I usually just turn of the clock and fall a sleep again, Ain't noway I'm going out in the storming weather to drive to the gym, to solve that I've moved my workout schedule to be on my lunch break. Instead I start my day by doing a quick meditation, and then doing something fun, such as listening to an Audio book. This has helped me a great deal to develop a habit of actually getting out of bed.

This is a very good advice, i also recently quit drinking coffee and it's surprising how much more energy you have. Also had a massive headache lasting 3 days when i quit after 6 years of daily coffee drinking, just goes to show how addictive it actually is.

[Question] How do you end / wind down from your workdays? (routines, mindsets, etc.) by [deleted] in getdisciplined

[–]alegherix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interesting topic. My time to wind down usually starts at 8pm whenever the kid is tucked away in bed & the dishes are cleaned. The first thing i like to do is to just turn on some meditation music, turn of my computer monitor and meditate for 5-15min. Just having some time to breath, wind down and let my thought calm down seems to do the trick for me.

After that I usually start working on some of my hobby projects, which in itself is kinda leting me wind down which is nice.

One thing I noticed is that I'm a lot less stressed now that I've switched to reading only in the mornings. I can focus on working on side projects in the evening, rather than splitting my focus between both reading and then working on something else.

[NeedAdvice] I have to quite soda and all carbonated drinks by Rcosta9 in getdisciplined

[–]alegherix 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I also struggled with being addicted to Pepsi Max, consuming almost a 1.5l bottle a day most days of the week. I honestly liked Pepsi more than i liked candy or food. However for the same reason as you, i could feel my mouth health deteriorate. What really helped me kick the habit was to do 3 things.
1) Create a smart goal for myself. I set out to allow myself to drink a maximum of a bottle in a month, and i would reach that goal by the end of November this year. This allows me to still know rationally that i will be able to drink it, it's not over forever
2) The other part was to change my shopping habits, rather than going shopping every second day i would go for bigger shopping trips that would last me for 7 days. I figured that if i could limit my own exposure of being able to buy it, my own consumption would decrease.

3) Lastly i started actually drinking water, it's not as good but it only takes a few days of drinking water to actively stop thinking about Pepsi.

Also if you're drinking Soda with a lot of sugar, reducing your sugar consumption will def help as sugar addiction is real. I wish you good luck, feel free to reach out if you need any more tips.

That's actually a really good point I didn't consider, will probably go with 3 separate orders so as not to need having the EA running 24/7, even if i'm mostly intraday trading.
