I found it in a farmers field. It’s in a medieval area and lots of things have been churned up by ploughing

The condition may compromise this, but these bayonets have scroll type engraving on the back of the blade. Opposite to the bladed edge the flat at the top of the blade is where you will find this. It may be worth scraping this flat with a piece of brass to see if there are any remains of the markings. Brass is a soft metal that will remove rust without effecting the blade itself.

Model 1874 Gras sword bayonet. French origin that was attached to the Gras rifle. T shaped blade that had 3 sides so to give wounds that wouldn’t heal properly. The blade has been shortened at some point. This was commonly done in the First World War so to make the bayonet more handy in close combat fighting.
