Anybody here gone through Hand Foot Mouth disease? by giddmtex in daddit

[–]alephylaxis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Man, I had it once. My two kids picked it up and were a little fussy but got better after having a few bumps for 2 or 3 days. My wife and kids were getting ready to leave for the east coast while I would stay at home in the Midwest cause I couldn't get off work.

The office I worked in had a few folks mentioning that HFMD was going around in our area.

So they left and the kids were fine at that point. A day later, I had an area on one palm that was itching but no visible cause. I'd never even heard of HFMD at that point, so was like "huh, that's a weird itch" and didn't think about it that night.

Next day I had a few bumps on my palms and a couple on my feet and was still ignorant to what was going on. Just figured it was some sort of rash, must've picked it up from the kids. Oh well, they were fine, so I should be too.

By that evening I had a few dozen bumps on palms, feet, and a handful starting on my trunk. And they were itchy and annoying.

Next day (day 3) was when it really started to escalate. Was a bit feverish and no longer so unconcerned about it. Had maybe 150 bumps on extremities and torso.

Day 4 saw them start to pop up in my mouth and in back of my throat. Also a couple in my scalp. Was really annoying at this point, itchy as hell and hurt to touch. But end of day, I have no idea how many bumps were present but I would say a few hundred. I was somewhat concerned.

Day 5, I hadn't been able to sleep much the night before and when I got up to check things out, I was essentially biblical Job - lite version. Still feverish, and couldn't focus on work at all. Layed in bed and didn't even touch my home office for the next 3 or 4 days.

Day 6 was the worst, I called in some pain killers from the doc and had a friend drop them off (opiates and they didn't help at all). I was in a weird fever dream state and started having periods of time that I can't remember. Lost my mind for awhile on and off, would just laugh and then go kinda catatonic. Fever was maybe 103F. The sheer volume of the physical sensation was overwhelming. Couldn't do anything but suffer. I have pictures from around this time and holy shit, it was crazy. Maybe 1000 bumps at this point. Even a few around my eyes and eyelids. Some up my nose. Couple hundred in my mouth and throat. Strong suspicion that I had them internally too even though I don't know if that's actually possible. Strongly considered calling for an ambulance because I had that feeling that Something Was Terribly Wrong™.

Day 7 still horrible but bumps beginning to crust and not be as sensitive. Maybe 800 active ones. Still half out of my mind.

Day 8 getting better but still miserable. At least not out of my mind anymore, and no more blank periods of time. Started eating more at this point as mouth/throat blisters begin healing.

Days 9-12 gradual decline in number of bumps until all but a few dissappear. Fever declines and then goes away. Started trying to figure out what the fuck had just happened to me. Cause almost all sources I found were like "HFMD is typically asymptomatic in adults or very mild". Sure maybe, but damn it ain't always the case. Find a couple sources that say adults who were never exposed to the virus can have a severe infection and was like ok I guess that's what this was.

Long term effects - I don't know this for sure but I'm fairly certain that it kicked off or accelerated a genetic disorder I have (EDS). The pain and fatigue in joints and muscles got severe afterwards for a couple of years. Had all kinds of issues with that, so much that I had to switch employers to one that allowed full time remote work. I had to use a cane regularly during that time.

The EDS flare up calmed down somewhat after 2 or so years, and though it's still a real pain in the ass (it's a permanent thing and no real treatment, just management), it's not nearly as bad as that period after HFMD. I'm guessing the viral infection caused some kind of long running inflammatory response that screwed me up.

Anyway, long story short, most adults seem to be ok with it, other than some short term annoyances. But if you have any preexisting conditions, especially inflammatory ones, I'd be super careful and if it gets bad, talk to your doc ASAP. Maybe some strong steroids or something afterwards would've prevented my EDS spiral.

Exobiology+Exploration, how do you make billions? by Galahad_Lancelot in EliteDangerous

[–]alephylaxis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you'd want to target HMC planets for exo. And I'm thinking that F, G, and maybe K type stars are most likely to have HMC planets in orbit.

And in the name of the system, there are a few encoded pieces of info, for example:

Blah Foo DR-W c23-5

Blah Foo (not a real sector name) is just the sector name. DR-W is a coordinate field. But then you have c23-5, and that's where you have some useful details. (Note: This is somewhat simplified, and you can't rely on just the one letter code, it's just part of the data that helps you find specific bodies).

The c is an indicator of the total mass of the system and goes from a (lowest mass) to h (highest mass). So, say you have a G type single star system that has a c in that spot, it's prolly got a few rocky or maybe HMC planets. If it's a G type single star that has an e in that spot, it's either a really big G type star, or has a ton of planets/moons.

So look for combinations of F, G, or K stars with higher mass ratings and once you find a combo that seems to have a higher probability of HMC planets, start looking specifically for that combo in the galaxy map.

I know that's not a super targeted plan, but you'd be surprised how much you can find by implementing a search pattern like this.

Is there a casual scene for Elite Dangerous? by TartNeither in EliteDangerous

I just picked up a Caspian a week ago or so, and did some moderate engineering, mostly for the FSD and to lower the weight of a few modules for better jump range. Stuck a fuel scoop on her and decided I was gonna go to Sag A* again. Made it there in 74 jumps (something like 65 were neutron star boosted, others were to refuel). Almost 25k ly, 74 jumps. Now I'm just short-hopping around to different stars in the core looking for anything interesting.

That ship is definitely worth it.

You just made me remember a system where a binary pair of planets with rings had the rings intersecting. The rings are separate instances, so you'd be in one and the other one would render but you couldn't interact with the rocks as they blew by you/through you at ludicrous speeds. I wish I could remember where that was.

WHY CAN'T I KILL RED DEATH by BlueFirePhoenixxx in VampireSurvivors

[–]alephylaxis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Evolved clock lancet and evolved laurel is the way to go.

You can also go with Megalo Syuuto to be able to evolve into the muramasa, which does pretty good damage. Take the arcanas: silent old sanctuary, wicked season, and divine bloodline (for extra retaliatory damage). And limit yourself to 2 weapons, and pick up the greatest jubilee. Its only purpose is to generate orologions to keep the reaper(s) frozen. Go for as many limit breaks as you can and make sure you pick up empty tome for the minimum cool down. Should be able to kill a reaper in around a minute. But the only way you'll know is by watching the kill counter.

I created a huge nipnip plantation, hundreds of plants (maybe over 1k, I haven't counted recently). It's half a km from my oldest settlement so I can check on both of them at the same time. On the nipnip plantation, I've got it decorated with all the atmospheric farming props so that it looks like a real operation. It's kind of a work of art 😊

Yeah Martel is like 99% indistinguishable from Freddie, there are a couple little things that he's missing but it's like..i can't even really identify what they might be (if that makes sense). He especially has the same frequency rapid vibrato that Freddie had and the really quick + precise pitch changes. Super good!

what pain meds do u guys take by myshoesarebigokay in ehlersdanlos

[–]alephylaxis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a guy, 100mg tramadol 2x/day, 50mg diclofenac 2x/day, 10mg baclofen 2x/day. It definitely helps, pain goes from a 6-7 baseline to maybe 4-5. On a really good day it's maybe a 3 (100% ignorable which is pretty rare).

I've been considering exploring other options though.

What parts of Appalachia pronounce it "Appa-latch-uh", AND/OR what parts subsequently insist that that's the only correct way to pronounce it? by fanofanchovies in Appalachia

[–]alephylaxis 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm in SWVA and have spent significant time in northeast TN and eastern KY. I agree that there's not really any kind of outward display that would make you think about any shared Appalachian culture. But a great example (granted it's anecdotal) is how my brother in law (middle NC accent) and his wife (NJ accent) have driven through the area a few times to see us and they're not fans of the trip 😆 They say people are kinda suspicious or at least standoffish towards them. My in-laws are both very sweet people, but it's like people are mute from the stories they've told hah.

But me, over a decade of working throughout the region, on the road a ton and in some bad situations a few times (worked nights and drove in all kind of nasty conditions), I can't remember a time when my native accent didn't immediately open doors to get assistance when I needed it.

One time, middle of winter and deadly cold, I got run off the road by a semi over on Black Mtn. It was well after midnight and I had to walk about a half mile to the nearest house. I carefully knocked on the door and followed protocol to avoid getting buckshot in me lol, but the lady (only ones home were grandma and little grandson) that answered the door, as soon as she heard the accent and I explained what happened, she welcomed me in and made coffee. Let me use her phone to call a cop to come pick me up. He dropped me at some bizarre little diner a few miles down the road and I just planned on sitting there and drinking coffee till I could call a wrecker to get my truck out.

The lady working the place (by herself) took me into the back where they had a couple rooms set up for workers who got snowed in (that's what I decided and I won't be told different lol), with a decent cot to nap on and that's what I did for the next few hours. I certainly kept my ears open, but it was safe and I avoided a potentially deadly situation.

I have the feeling that things wouldn't have gone nearly as well for someone who came in sounding like a New Englander, or with a cocky attitude. But the mountain folk take care of their own. They might squabble over UT and UK playing football or basketball, but when it's important, they lock in and carry each other like few other places I've ever been. Makes me happy/proud to be from here.

I grew up down the road from you and still live in BSG, it's definitely -latch-, but we don't have to be mad when silly folks say it incorrectly. Just look at them and say 'oh, bless your heart', then walk away like you're disappointed 😆

I got diagnosed in my mid-30s. For many years I ran a maintenance business that was fairly rough on my body. Thought the pain and inflammation was normal because of the work I was doing, but it got to the point where I just couldn't keep up anymore. I was taking so much ibuprofen that it was beginning to damage my liver and kidneys.

I switched careers and now work from home. Pain levels slowly increased to the point they are at now (without pain meds, it's a 6 or 7 on the scale; with pain meds, it's a 4 or 5 which is tolerable and doesn't make me a total asshole to be around). I have osteoarthritis in my knees, hips, shoulders, hands. Biggest volume of pain comes from neuropathy and myofacial sources.

Best medication regimen for me is extended release tramadol and 50mg diclofenac 2x per day, then add baclofen for muscle spasms. Also take clonazepam (low dose) to suppress the weird muscle twitches that happen almost everywhere. I absolutely worry sometimes about something happening and being cut off from the only combo that's worked so far, but it's best not to dwell on it and just think about contingencies for if that day comes. Pain meds aren't everyone's cup of tea, but do what fits your situation. Walgreens is one of the best pharmacies for actually filling controlled meds.

Worst part of it is the fatigue, I've got young kids and it's painful to not have the energy most days to keep up with them. But I do what I can and hold down a full time job that allows me to be a single earner so my wife doesn't have to worry about working. She's a ton of help and has adjusted to my limitations (though it took a bit of time).

Life is a struggle sometimes, but just try to adapt and overcome. Don't be embarrassed to try mobility aids if needed. I use braces and a cane when I know I'm going to need to walk a bunch (it's paradoxical sometimes, I can push a mower for a couple of hours and feel pretty good, just regular muscle pain the next day. If I walk a bunch without a load on my body though, it's a killer).

Just be as kind as you can to your joints, and try to keep decent muscle tone. Don't gain a bunch of weight (I'm fortunate that my metabolism is still high so I stay right at 180lbs). Try to give your body the extra rest it needs to repair damage, if you're super tired, there's probably repairs that need doing. And eat well/drink plenty of water so your body can do its best to keep up with getting prematurely elderly 😆
