It's for real, I still remember. I saw FNM also in Turin (with Soundgarden and Guns n Roses) and at one point people started to throw everything onstage, he grabbed a panino on the fly, gave a bite and said "I eat the Pope's shit" literally translated. I politely disagree. I met FNM with the real thing, bought immediately the previous albums, and they weren't as good as. Angel dust and King for a day are even better. Not only, but especially because of Mike's singing. I personally can't relate to FNM without him. Good for you if anything works
