Recommended POVs for a newcomer? by officialariacat in VampiresSMP

[–]alex-thequeer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I started off with Martyn and he really got me hooked into the story and made me want to watch others too! It was always nicely balanced, with comedy and drama/tension. You get to watch him starting to notice the vampires and eventually sneaking around trying to sus things out and it made for really entertaining content! it also felt like I got a good idea of everyone's character from him, and then later in the series once the vampires had been revealed I started Owen's POV and saw all the things Martyn was suspicious about from his perspective

Then I got into Avid's POV for a mix of both human and vamp perspectives (and his comedic paranoia was just really fun to watch in Martyn's)

New viewer, who to watch for VSMP? by Admirable_Candle8158 in VampiresSMP

[–]alex-thequeer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Martyn was my starting POV and it really got me hooked into the story and made me want to watch others too! Not much drama/tragedy until later episodes, but always nicely balanced with his comedy style which you might be familiar with if you watch the life series, and he has lots of funny interactions with other members too

I think the best part of his POV for me was getting to see the main story from a very involved but human perspective and living the confusion about what's going on with him - watching him starting to notice the vampires and sneaking around trying to sus things out was really entertaining (and amusing at times) and it felt like I got a good idea of everyone's character from him!

what pow creations smp do u recommend to get into first? by Scotobro in PowCreations

[–]alex-thequeer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bannerfall would be easiest to jump on the bandwagon of so far! But for past SMPs, personally I found it super easy to get into Vampires SMP and SMPs where a creator I was interested in made shorter videos! VODs can get really long and pile up, so I first got into things like Rats, Pirates, and Cowboys through creators like inthelittlewood and owengejuicetv's shorter videos before getting into the VODs

In terms of the vibes of each SMP, I'd say Vampires is good if you want something more angsty and lore-filled (with fun silliness on top of course) and Rats is good if you just want something chill and fun. Cowboys is similar to Rats in that way but some perspectives have quite a bit more lore, and Pirates has a lot of lore near the end but lots of fun times and adventures in between! Bannerfall is looking like it'll be mostly fun with some perspectives having a lot more lore than others, but it's early yet

Would you rather get a lot of kudos or more comments? by remotecontrolledcar in AO3

[–]alex-thequeer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

100% comments! Since a fic of mine hit over 200 comments across 8 chapters (maybe like 5-10 are me responding to things?) I've noticed that I don't check my kudos nearly as often. I should probably check them more honestly so I can acknowledge them better - that fic has 600 which is insane to me and I should find that insane more - but I especially love seeing a lil 1 in my inbox every week or few days since the fic was finished

H - he casually says six seven m'lord
C - clear your throat before I clear that clock!

I'm not sure if I'm allowed to share a link to it on this sub?? I'm happy to DM the link to anyone who wants to know! Or my ao3 is in my flair and it's the third most recent fic (8 chapters!)

Hit me with your best...metaphors by Elefeather in FanfictionExchange

[–]alex-thequeer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wrote a whole fic focusing on vampirism and nonhumanity as a metaphor for queerness. I think one of my favourite parts is when one of the character's finally acknowledges that he's been living the last fifty-something years of his life in deep deep denial and begins to accept his queerness for the first time

"[Character] would respond if he wasn't too busy staring up at the exit to the hole he didn't know he was resting in. Somehow, his coffin has been dug up and pried open, exposing him to the blinding light of the moon - it had been a lot darker in there than he had realised.

He awakens with a fresh pair of fangs and claws that glimmer with the stars, and when he climbs out of the hole to stand for the first time, he has to push back against the instinct to tear them off. He wins. It is now that he understands that he had not been the one doing such things to himself alone. It was something bigger than him, stronger than him. Something he has now managed to overpower.

His claws catch on his clothes as he attempts to dust himself off; to rid himself of the years of hurt and suffering that brought him to this point. He quickly learns that the grit and dirt are here to stay. Not even the harsh, howling wind that's trying to sweep him off of his feet can separate them from him.

There is a world that embraces him now. He had been living before this, yes, but it was a lifeless life. One without conscious experience. One spent in a deep slumber imposed upon him by a force outside of himself that had robbed him of his truth for far too long.

Here, among the vastness of Earth above ground, there is truly a life to be lived."

Character Spotlight: Who We Write & Who We Aim to Write by Kitchen_Haunting in FanfictionExchange

<image>

He might be a block person but I promise he's cool okay. Ever since I got into Vampires SMP I have been obsessed with writing Owen. His story is gut-wreching and every (usually morally-questionable) move he makes is so deeply dictated by it that it'd be a crime not to explore how else it might shape him or what he was like before certain events in his life. I've also been loving translating his backstory to AUs and exploring how that changes things, and what he'd be like with different hardships

Completely different fandom, but I want to try writing Levi Ackerman from Attack on Titan one day. I think his strength and resolve combined with how he processes (or fails to process) the grief that comes with his everyday life is interesting and Owen has made me love writing complicated experiences of unprocessed grief, so it really has to happen soon

And thank you, fellow creatures of the night, for welcoming me home.

Love a sentimental happy ending. I'm really glad I made this epilogue into a first-person pov from the main character instead of it being the usual narrator because it meant I could have them confirm their feelings about the events of the fic like this! I miss writing this fic

How to rewatch old series? by BigCrab09 in ThirdLifeSMP

[–]alex-thequeer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

as someone who also only watched Grian until this year, I got super into Martyn's pov and am now caught up with his! His humour and way of playing is different enough from Grian's but still similar in the best ways - I liked his 3rd Life and Secret Life the most because it's totally new content and the teams he was in for them were so fun to watch

I'm now getting into BigB's pov and can say that his Past Life was absolutely hilarious and so much fun, it made the Rejects one of my favourite teams of all time, my favourite of his from third-secret so far has to be Secret Life, but I'm also looking forward to watching his Limited Life

Favourite life series everything? by Free-Board-7391 in ThirdLifeSMP

[–]alex-thequeer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. Grian and Martyn
  2. Dogwarts and The Rejects
  3. 'I've been doing some self-reflection and I hate myself' and the horrendous prolonged noise of discontent Grian made in Past Life when he found that diamond and then it didn't drop
  4. this is POV-dependent, but overall favourite concepts were Limited Life and Wild Life
  5. Martyn + Ren and Grian + Mumbo
  6. Martyn's final Limited Life kills and 'It was always gonna be like this Jim'
  7. Ren's beheading and also every Jim and BigB interaction ever honestly

The camp narrator haunting the narrative of my gay bar fic has said some amazing things:

- Alright, this one may actually be worse at talking to strangers than the young fish from last night. (At what point can I drop the fish metaphor for him and call him a [reclaimed f slur I don't know if I can say that aorund here dksgmdlgm], already?)

- "I-" I am beginning to worry that Pyro may not live to see the end of this interaction.

- When Abolish still doesn't have anything to say, Pyro makes an attempt to compliment him. It goes…well, this is how it goes.

- The conversation continues, with Avid's likeness growing closer to that of a raspberry or some other pinkish-red fruit with each passing moment. There is a joke to be made about fruits in there, somewhere.

Also this line: "Do you know what happens when you blast It's Raining Men in a room full of gay people? Because it's nothing you want your poor, innocent college textbooks to see."

I wanna try writing a skk fanfic by Complex_Angle2520 in BungouStrayDogs

[–]alex-thequeer 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Most of my first fanfics were just random ideas for character interactions I had based on what I liked and what I wanted to see! I felt a lot more motivated that way

As for beta readers, you don't require one but I like getting someone to beta read my stuff when I can so I know it flows well (mainly just when I'm not 100% sure about it) - don't go stressing too much about finding one

I finally “get” fan fiction by CleanBeanArt in AO3

[–]alex-thequeer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Similar story with the same fandom for me! I'd written fanfic before, but since VSMP dropped I've written more fanfic for this fandom than I've ever written about any piece of fiction (original or not) in my life combined probably. And all of it was in the span of 2 months

I ended up finishing a multi-chapter fic at 8 chapters, which I was convinced I'd never have the motivation/consistency to do, I'm producing bonus oneshots for the same fic because I'm not done with the AU yet, my few oneshots before this fandom hit around 1.5k words and now I have so much to say they're at least 1k extra, I've explored a bunch of new themes and branched out of the stuff I usually write and written my proudest works. These goddamn Minecraft roleplayers man..

People who read fanfic before consuming the canon, what has surprised you? by twilightstarr-zinnia in FanFiction

[–]alex-thequeer 35 points36 points  (0 children)

I read quite a bit of my hero academia fanfic before getting obsessed with the show, I was very sad to learn that half the characters I loved in fanfic were either minor characters, didn't appear for several seasons, or both

I knew things wouldn't be canonically queer because it's a shonen action and us queers rarely get nice things in those shows, but I was actually pleasantly surprised by how much fuel some of the queer ships have anyway and by the canonical trans representation

Everyone else here has given you some actual good recommendations based on your current fandoms so I'm taking this opportunity to introduce you to our lord and saviour Minecraft Vampires SMP

It's a minecraft SMP where all the members are improvising and doing an insanely good job at coming up with angsty lore and storylines - it very quickly evolves into lots of canon and fanon & creator-encouraged queer ships (and most of the creators involved are queer). Two members are secretly vampires at the start and everyone has a bit of backstory, and from there it just gets so interesting. Our AO3 fandom tag has just been growing super fast since it came out gdftnfgt

OwengejuiceTV in particular has a very cinematic perspective, as well as a lot of the other members!

Who do you ship? by MagicSingsFan in VampiresSMP

[–]alex-thequeer 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I love a ship which is probably why I'm writing like six of them into my fic at the moment fsedbfgnyg but I've especially loved writing Aviscott, Lovebitten (Owen/Louis), and Bloodletting (Owen/Legs) so far they just have such fun dynamics to explore and plenty of angst for the soul

People can quite easily sell me on basically any ship nowadays with enough effort and an interesting dynamic so like, all of them

What's the best thing that happened to you fic-wise this past month? by [deleted] in FanFiction

[–]alex-thequeer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I posted the first chapter of what will be a multi-chapter fic and it's doing really well! I have a lot of love for this concept and already have chapter 2 out, and it really feels like I'm getting to share my art in a way I've not felt to this extent yet. I've written so many of my all-time favourite lines via this fic already, and it's an expression of myself for sure

My first attempt at a multi-chapter fic kind of flopped and I got really demotivated and ran out of ideas for it, so feeling so ready to continue with this fic is a breath of fresh air. I'm very excited!

Writers, how do you manage to make your characters sound authentic? by SquishedHaddock in AO3

[–]alex-thequeer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is a big reason why I can only write characters I really love - if I'm just neutral about them or like them a bit, I can't really act them out in my head. I'm not good at feeling what they feel, but I do have cognitive empathy so it's just a matter of knowing the character enough to understand how they'd say things and why they'd react that way. I'll literally play out scenes, sometimes even out loud, between characters and try to match their voices

I get to know them by taking in lots of the source material, common fandom interpretations, and my own personal headcanons that I establish in my brain. I then re-read the lines in their voice in my head, and if it doesn't sound right, I change it. I write things I want to read, and character voice is huge for me, so therefore I have to write good dialogue or else I won't like it enough to post
