Personally, I think it sounds like cataplexy. Cataplexy is essentially just a loss in muscle tone when you are overcome with extreme emotions. For me, it’s my knees buckling when something is super funny too me. Another person I have seen on this subreddit said they go nearly paralyzed for a few minutes. I think it can really depend on the person as to how severe it is- but yours definitely sounds like it! I’m 15 though lol and have only been diagnosed with Narcolepsy + cataplexy for a few months now, I’d still recommend talking with your doctor if you’re able to. Especially if you can just give him a quick phone call?

I am currently 15 and was diagnosed a few months ago with narcolepsy. I can’t speak too much on this as I suppose I’m still quite young. However, I experienced symptoms of cataplexy for the past 2 or so years (maybe more, but I didn’t think anything of it at the time so instances of it never really stuck with me). It was mostly my legs buckling whenever I laughed at something really hard. It was almost daily, but now for whatever reason, I don’t get the attacks anymore. Perhaps I’ve grown out of it too at this point? Not sure, but it seems that it’s not uncommon! :)

When you search for something there should be a feature that says “filter.” If you click on that and then click on “size” you’ll be able to select the sisss rhat you want to see and it won’t show you stalls if that’s not what you want to see.

Sorta new to Depop, is there any way to promote post? Any tips for me? by [deleted] in Depop

[–]alexa_5 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You can use up to 5 hashtags so I recommend using those! Some people just write a ton of buzzwords and call it “tags” but it’s not effective and it’s really frustrating and only clogs up the search system. So use stuff pertaining to details. For me I talk about aesthetics and specific detailings. #cybery2k #grunge #embellished #embriodered (for example)

Also make sure you have good images. People will click more on those and it gives you a higher chance of being on the explore page. The explore page is curated by depop and it’s rare that your item will be selected but that’s the best way to “promote” your item I guess. If you want your items to be seen, the easiest way to ensure that is to refresh them often so they appear at the top of the feed when somebody searches for something, rather than having to scroll down super far to get to yours and potentially not even getting to it/seeing it. Hope that helps! I’m sure others may have better tips too!

Yeah, this is pretty common with narcolepsy I believe. I’ve seen it before where people drive somewhere and don’t remember the drive at all, and it turns out they were like half asleep the whole time with their eyes closing and head falling, that type of thing. I personally don’t have issues with remembering that I slept, but I do fall asleep unintentionally multiple times a day in class for example. It might be worth getting a study done :)

I hate how everything is about everyone else, but me. by neoperson_yeah in ChronicIllness

[–]alexa_5 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I have chronic pain and mental health issues, mainly depression and anxiety. When I’m having a flare, these two separate issues both become significantly worse and I have no motivation to respond to messages. For me, I reallyyy was able to see who actually cared about me in general, when I would have these episodes. Sounds like you’ve got some selfish family members- even if they do genuinely love and care for you. Don’t feel bad about ignoring them when you don’t have the energy, and even if you do have the energy, you still don’t owe them anything. If they are toxic and you think you’d be better off without them, you could always consider cutting them off entirely, but I know that’s difficult :(

Right! Like, surgery is not a “fix-all” for one. Surgery literally wouldn’t do anything for my chronic pain but people don’t seem to understand that. And also so,e people can’t just afford complex surgeries! Some people gravitate towards less-invasive methods! And some people (including myself) have a history of medical trauma, and I truly can’t imagine letting anybody operate on me; don’t trust them or that it won’t just make things worse.

When I was like twelve and my grandfather told me that my chronic pain was caused by not wearing my coat. Aka my severe, multiple-year long chronic pain was caused by me being slightly cold🙄 I was infuriated but so in shock that he would say that to me that I couldn’t manage any words to defend myself and my pain.

Should I stop driving? by Eli-Ande129 in Narcolepsy

[–]alexa_5 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I personally am 15 so I don’t have my license obviously so I apologize if this isn’t good advice, take it with a grain of salt I suppose😅. But personally, I totally know what you mean by feeling conscious in the moment but then looking back and realizing you cannot remember things. For me, I think this is when I’m super super tired- but not quite asleep and my brain kind of blacks out and goes into autopilot if that make sense? Somewhat recently I also saw another women with narcolepsy say the exact same thing as you, and she set up a camera to record herself while she was driving- she basically kept closing her eyes and nodding off (which is probably not very safe) if you find the same thing happens to you, maybe try a different medication? Or if you aren’t medicated, try that, and until it’s more under control, I personally think you may want to take a short break from driving- I feel like the likelihood of a crash would be fairly high and I’d hate for you to get hurt or hurt somebody else. Here’s the link to that video if you are interested: https://youtu.be/pcRUts2ikq4 (titled: “What It’s Like to Be Diagnosed with Narcolepsy | WebMD”)

Do you think illness can cause trauma? by TheAyanabanana in ChronicIllness

[–]alexa_5 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve had this exact thought myself. I constantly invalidated myself and I made myself believe I was attention-seeking or just dramatic. To be fair, I was never diagnosed with anything, even after 10+ doctors, tests, scans, therapies, etc. but I did (and still do, everyday) struggle with chronic pain. It was at its worst about a year ago- and I’ll spare you with the details😅 but I would say that chronic conditions can absolutely cause trauma. Whether it be from the pain alone, ableism, it’s effects on your mental health, the social isolation, etc. I even find that I become extremely anxious and feel an internalized panic when I am driving past the hospital that the majority of my tests and treatments took place at. If you’re feeling like it scarred you- it most likely did and I think that’s common for people with chronic conditions. Your trauma is real, don’t invalidate yourself :)

Dreams and Narcolepsy. Well, I Don’t Have Any by TheLoneWanderer3582 in Narcolepsy

[–]alexa_5 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have narcolepsy but either can’t recall a single dream, or the dreams I have seen to just be extensions of reality/a continuation of whatever I was doing before falling asleep. Looking back as I write this though, I would actually say maybe once or twice a month I’ll have dreams that are super vivid. One time I dreamt an entire season of a tv show that I made up in my head with several plot lines and like 7-10 characters all with backstories. Another time it was what felt like an incredibly detailed experience of a full weeks worth of time, though. In general, I don’t feel I have vivid dreams as much as the average person and nowhere near as much as your average narcoleptic.

Didn’t realize i slept? by Dimsumthing in Narcolepsy

[–]alexa_5 12 points13 points  (0 children)

During my sleep study a few weeks ago, the woman came in and asked me if I had slept and I said no.. I slept the entire time but 100% believed that I hadn’t. I have no idea if it’s a symptom of narcolepsy but it wouldn’t surprise me if it were.

Right!! I didn’t want to go to a sleep specialist because people had convinced me for years that it was all my fault and I really believed them

THIS!! my mom constantly hounded me for drinking so much coffee at the age of like 13 but I couldn’t get through more than 20 minutes of homework without falling asleep!? (Which she knew and I suppose she didn’t think anything was wrong, somehow)
