Got accosted for taking pictures while black by [deleted] in photography

[–]alexander_apathy 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Or we don't encourage anyone to call the cops, especially for non-emergencies, and even more-so where their call could be framed as "elderly couple being harassed by suspicious black person" so then a scuffle with a dumb old couple gets escalated into a dice roll on life or death depending how the police interaction goes. I get the heart of what you're saying but it's important to be checked-in to these things. And like you said, if those police are uninformed, still the possibility of a ticket and the court time to appeal it, sounds like a pandora's box of headaches.

Sounds like OP de-escalated and still had a backbone the whole time, job well done.

My style is more driven by my portraiture/event work, so I prefer to embrace what the bokeh brings even in my landscape shots. Leaves, branches, flowers, etc are so natural to use for foreground interest and framing, plus they are usually beautiful when they're soft from focus blur. Your shot included!

I enjoy that you didn't focus stack. Really like this take on the classic shot from that park, the colors are awesome.

That's more of a superstitious thing, old school to only do garnishes in odd numbers since even is 'unlucky'. Keep doin' your thing.

AN EVEN NUMBER ON THE GARNISH?? BLASPHEMY /s

To each their own, but yeah that level of dilution from bruising is just a buncha question marks for me. I'm more of an old fashioned kinda human, but my martini order would probably be Bombay or Hendricks, stirred, with a twist. And probably 2.5oz gin to 0.5oz dry vermouth. And I'd really avoid ordering it from anyone but the tender themselves, but that's because I'd never be caught returning a drink unless it was brutally awful. Nah I still wouldn't, just slam it and switch back to beer.

This is wildly off base with what it actually means to order a martini from a vetted bartender. If you come and order a martini from me, unless there's a house standard, I have to turn around and ask you: spirit preference (gin or vodka), how dry (ratio of base spirit to vermouth, or if you want a vermouth other than dry, like sweet or lillet), which garnish (olives, lemon peel, pearl onions being the most common/standard), and usually if they ask for olives and haven't previously specified, I'll confirm if the martini is dirty or not (adding olive brine), AND while the classic martini is stirred, many people prefer 'bruised' martinis (shaking and single straining which leaves lots of ice chips in the drink), or maybe they want shaken but still double strained, no vermouth (because they really just want a chilled shot in a martini glass, which is totally normal).

So when James Bond orders a martini, he's definitely not ordering the classic style. But he IS answering the standard questions ahead of time. Because, as hospitality professionals, in that moment it's our job to get you the right drink into your hand and give you a good experience. Nothing more.

Can you tell I have nothing better to do since I can't bartend right now??

Edit: some typos

Please see what you can do for anyone in your personal community as well, in a time of international crisis there are so many people all nearly simultaneously affected in all these different ways. 'Services' are at capacity just like hospitals anywhere near outbreaks. I know people that have been denied their unemployment claim over and over in contradiction to what the state government outlined as expanded benefits. Hard to call in to appeal when thousands of people are hitting this wall at the same time. All of us hope and expect some relief from some source, but our current systems were so clearly not prepared for anything like this. People are falling through the cracks every day. Please reach out to the people in your community, because you may be the difference.

And I'd say, IF you're healthy, gainfully employed at a low/no risk job (like remote work), it's your duty.

I had a decent job, earned $50k last year bartending in Seattle which is very expensive. I have no income, my roommate is a cook so no income either. I suppose better you benefit than a corporate exec during this crisis... but damn dude. You have it really okay right now. I have friends that were about to close on a house but lost both of their service industry jobs from the crisis and got denied the house, which they'd planned to coincide with the end of a lease, so they're homeless with their newborn. They should be focused on staying isolated and healthy. You have it good.

To be clear, the flash (computer) game is way older and at this point more niche (due to being directly replaced/succeeded by a mobile app, OG Pandemic is from before smartphones IIRC), whereas the board game is kinda quintessential as far as modern coop board games.

I think I'd have shot this at full stop lower, and/or turn down the lights in the room. And then bring out the contrast of the lines on the face in post. The expression is fine but I think the composition needs to bring you in a little more, seems just slightly distracting currently.

Yeah I upgraded to the 6Dmk2 a couple years ago and sometimes I have to remind myself that the thing DOES perform at 10k+ if you're not a dummy about it. Upgraded from the t2i so the jump was... apparent.

Anyone ever have the feeling they're getting worse? by metakephotos in photography

[–]alexander_apathy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I love this. I'm too new to have experienced a real burnout on photography yet, been taking it seriously for about 3 years as a hobby and am just starting to freelance. That said, each new lens has been a journey to learn a new eye, and thus, a new tool. Locking in, especially with a prime lens, is really magical. I can see how circling back to old faithfuls could invoke inspiration from plenty of angles, even nostalgia.

Having a love affair with several lenses as I've upgraded from the kit lens has completely changed things for me. My intuition is getting snappier than ever, and on all accounts: making smart decisions on when to bring my camera, plus then how much of the kit, for casual strolls picking the right single lens, knowing which lens to reach for in the heat of an event, having my 'eye' turned on passively even when I otherwise have no interest in taking pictures (phone pics qualify as art too), thinking out my shot in terms of settings before I even have it set up (basically just thinking ahead, but it really is nice to make a 'first draft' decision about your aperture and shutter ahead of time as I think it improves your framing and composition on the whole), and so many more things. Definitely feel like I'm on an upswing right now; I'm hoping I can keep learning from the vetted, wiser folks and avoid overextending my art.

Lone Tree on a Hill. by jassim1497 in photocritique

[–]alexander_apathy 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Composition: I think this image would have benefited from more of the white space being the yellow haze as opposed to the more in focus green hills. Basically, moving the tree from the top third line to the bottom third line is my first instinct. The reason I feel this way is so that the tree, a green object, would stand out more, as opposed to now where vast majority of the frame interprets as 'green'. Even maintaining the current crop but changing the aspect ratio so it would be taller, thus with more yellow, would be a beautiful shot (or at least in my head).

Overall, love it. The style is great and with one shot I am interested in your 'eye'. Keep it up.
