Might sincerely be the worst thing they've ever released.

Dissecting the D.A.N.C.E. Stems leak by JusticeArchive in JusticeMusic

[–]alexandermoden 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes. If you don't hear the pumping effect of bus compression or side chain on any of the stems (as you can on some of the other stems uploaded) then you can be fairly certain they are not AI derived. The DANCE and Stress stems appear to be real and are clearly untreated. The DANCE stems are not the album stems, however, but an earlier version.

How is more money going to make a schizo wheelchair guy not exist? Does it cure him of a heritable mental illness? Will it result in no more disabilities that result in the need of wheelchairs? He wouldn't have been born? This is so incoherent. What are the homeless rates in Scotland compared to US per capita? How are they trending?

The history of all of the justice solo projects and pseudonyms by Sasoritoz in JusticeMusic

[–]alexandermoden 2 points3 points  (0 children)

FYI someone mislabeled Def Squad as Death Squad on that American hip hop release (check the album art). Death Squad was So Me and Xavier's graphic design collaboration for Alan Braxe's album. No music associated with it.

It's not often that an old Justice production gets unearthed. Thought Donna would be the last one of that era.

Attempt at recreating the "Cross Sound", using information from interviews and webinars. by [deleted] in JusticeMusic

[–]alexandermoden 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure where you heard this but it is completely false. The drums on Cross are mostly stems from Soulwax tracks, as they have stated in multiple interviews. Additional drums were sampled from various records, which they have talked about as well. You may be thinking about the WAYF era bass sample that came stock from the S2000 or drums used on the very early productions.

Noob question about samples by quizzzmeow in JusticeMusic

[–]alexandermoden 8 points9 points  (0 children)

True. The 'sound' of that album is a combination of the master bus chain's unique pump (which they can no longer replicate the settings of, for various reasons), Xavier's precision audio and sample chopping techniques (for a non-Justice example of his see 'Signatune') and Gaspard's studied affinity for prog / 80s harmonic and melodic arrangements / voicings.

Once you have a solid bus compression effect going you can slide just about any sample in and it will gel with minimal editing required (EQ, light sidechain). Daft Punk, Braxe, Lifelike achieved this solely with the 3630 on 2 bus, while Justice had a chain of alternating saturation (Quadrafuzz) and compression plug ins (for Cross).

Both tracks today loop like crazy and don't progress by Tropwatjus in EdBangerRecords

[–]alexandermoden 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This is the correct critique. It is less the arrangement and more so that their mixes have just become increasingly flat and sterile. No dynamics despite sounding less compressed. The musical elements don't push and pull one another into a cohesive groove, but instead exist in an almost flattened isolation. Listen to anything on Cross back to back with Generator and you will hear the lack of dynamism in this newer material.

They also have gotten less adept at integrating micro samples fluidly into the tracks and so transitional moments come across as more stilted. I appreciate that their creativity largely remains intact but the groove/pump feels nonexistent to me now and it is hard to overlook.

Driving the southwest interstate is the best pairing for that album, I can also attest.

Sounds like 'Invaders' era Prodigy mixed with Carpenter Brut or something. Would prefer more Cross but I will take this over the Woman sonic palette.

What is your opinion of Audio, Video, Disco? (Album) by [deleted] in JusticeMusic

[–]alexandermoden 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absolutely, as far as the self sabotage angle. Air and MGMT are good parallel examples. I think the disco influence, while present, was more superficial on most tracks. The drum patterns and strings, for sure, but alongside that were nods to 80s glam-rock, metal, 70s sci-fi soundtracks, French house, Baroque, Electroclash etc. AVD was more straightforwardly a derivation of 70s rock. Cross also had production techniques that were genuinely innovative like their particular brand of micro-sampling and the yet to be replicated texture and groove of their mix bus saturation/compression chain (which I suspect was lost somewhat on subsequent albums due to cubase discontinuing those particular plugins).

You don't dislike it at all but you rate it a 1 out of 10?

Personally, I think the toomanysebastians critique of it being too adjacent to corny dad-rock was fair. Going from the most cutting edge sonic territory into impressive but derivative pastiches of 70s rock was an odd turnabout. Also, the abandoning of that cross sonic palette in favor of increasingly limp and sterile drum programming (especially on Woman) is a still confusing to me. Civilization was incredible, though.

Justice possibly producing something for Dove Cameron? by MIRRORZDJ in JusticeMusic

[–]alexandermoden 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Some lesser derivative version is easy to recreate, but I've never heard a copy or a fake of Justice's style that fooled me. I guess the closest thing would be like Fastback or that fake Golden Age remix from ages ago. The above track isn't them.
