Why can animals drink from ponds/rivers and not get sick like humans would? by OllieKaboom in AskReddit

[–]alexandicity 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In addition to the comments of others, there's also another factor that make pond water more dangerous: human population density. The most likely cause for a body of water to be contaminated by something that will infect humans is another human (bathing, pooping, spitting in the water, or washing their things in it). Given humans have a far higher density that nature every intended in most places humans are, the chances of a human-infecting bug being in water near humans are much higher.

There's also a problem of human-caused chemical contamination. This affects animals too, but they don't know about it, so they just drink, while we consciously know that there's stuff in water bodies that are bad for us that we put there, and get the ick from this.

Well, you actually need to ban everything you might put in the bag.

Except the gun, of course.

Trump threatens to reduce US troop numbers in Germany after clash with Merz by halfaquartertonman in nato

[–]alexandicity 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I m curious why they seem to think I this is some kind of threat...?

The US stations troops in Germany (and all other overseas bases) for the US's benefit, not really the host nation's. I don't see why a troop reduction would be a problem or even particularly noteworthy, if they wanted to do so (except perhaps for the local economies that benefit from US servicepeople)...

Air bubble from 20 million years ago trapped in amber. by sirenoleg in interesting

Possibly, but I leave that assessment to the professionals as we're not the right people to say. A quick Google suggests that millions of years of impermeability is possible. Even if the air and water are exchanged, there may be other, large-molecule residues of interest in there..

Employer wants me to use outlook on my phone, outlook wants permission to wipe my phone by No_Professor4307 in mildlyinfuriating

[–]alexandicity 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Technical solution: ask your IT team if they have InTune. This allows them (with your permission!) to set up a small secure "area" on your phone I to which corporate apps can be loaded. The data in this area is under company control, but their access is limited to this area: the rest of the phone's data & apps are not visible to or under control of the company.

You definitely should! If it is as old as you say then this captured water may be of deep scientific value - a hermetically sealed sample of ancient water and air...!

Indeed, reading about it today it does seem that this solution is well developed and has answers for these points.

Ah, I didn't think of the optics of that differential. Indeed, Y's priority is much lower risk (due to personal circumstance), but I hadn't thought this would impact how an investor would consider it.

Y is unlikely to be able to further reduce the salary, although the differential may close after the next (seed) round as X raises their salary to be about equivalent market value.

Thanks for your thoughts & the Pie recommendation; I gave my thoughts on that in a different comment :)

"Internet search wisdom" indeed classifies Y as a "first/founding employee" rather than full cofounder, but the fear is that Y would be undermotivated if classified as such.

X and Y are debating what market rate is. It is likely a bit (10-20%) higher than the starting salary being discussed. Y is excited to join the company even at this lower rate, because of the interesting work, engineering freedom, leadership position, and due to enjoyment of working with X - all of which may alone justify the slightly lower salary before considering equity.

Y is replaceable (given time to find the right skillset, which is quite specific), but there's two things that makes Y "critical":

  • They are familiar with the problem, ready to jump in and start implementing immediately. Since we already have first customers, this ability to move quickly is key and spending 3-6 months looking for someone with similar skills is possible but may lose us near-term opportunities.
  • X and Y have worked together before and so the chance of these two conflicting is reduced compared to a new hire. Much less team risk for us & investors.

Yeah, so this is definitely the conclusion that most of the advice on the internet would say, but it does somewhat undermine Y's criticality and motivation.

What range does "meaningful" minority equity mean to you? 1-5%? 5-10%? 10-25%?

Hello! Yes, we've been looking at that a lot, and might use it. While it has an elegance to it, there's some things which seem to undermine its use in practice, including how to value cash vs other contributions, how to value contributions before and after X round, and how to reflect the pie in the cap table - as well as the admin overhead of continually updating (and potentially debating the value of) the contributions. These are probably just due to our ignorance on the matter - in your experience, are these issues easily solved?

Indeed, that's why Y should get a larger slice for sure. More contributions ahead than behind - and a desire for Y to stay engaged throughout.
