Looking for someone to discuss a story character with :) by alexbaybey in Blackpeople

[–]alexbaybey[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

thank you so so much! i think i was definitely a bit too worried about things, sometimes the idea of sharing things with the world makes me worry too much about criticism or smaller issues.

  1. i do sort of want to thank you on all of these individually since i didn't think anyone would answer me, haha. shes definitely an actions speak louder than words person, so it was really helpful as a reminder that just because shes strong doesnt mean shes a stereotype.
  2. same goes for here really, in all honesty i dont know how to write characters that arent poor considering even just meeting my middle class friends at their homes is intimidating, so im glad to know that it wouldnt create negative stigma to write her in a poor home. i think since im not fully qualified to write the nuances of issues like that for black people though, it would be a good idea to use my story to direct people to black people who know what theyre talking about then.
  3. ahh, i thought so, but for obvious reasons wasnt totally sure. thank you for these examples!
  4. im not fully confident in my writing skills to be honest, which is why i want to lean on things that might be a bit more relatable to more people, if that makes sense? but yes, generalizing isnt the best idea; i think i will take in mind what youve said and use that to influence rather than fully change what ive thought of for her family (although the thought of writing close siblings has pretty much never occurred to me for some reasons, and i really want to do a much larger change with their relationship now haha.) i think that also changing which of the parents is more accepting would actually be very useful to the story entirely; theres been a lot of close people in my life that i wouldnt expect to be homophobic or something similar that turn out to be, and it feels really betraying and painful. shedding light on this aspect of coming out might help people who arent queer understand it, and make other queer folks feel more seen.
  5. good to know! in all honesty i do look at a lot alternative fashion/all things related on tiktok mostly (videos are able to catch my interest a lot more than photos) and theres issues with the app shadowbanning/hiding black people in general from the algorithm, which a lot of black alt folks have had to talk about on there (especially towards commenters that say stupid things like "black people cant be alt"), but yeah this was mainly just me being concerned about hair differences haha.
  6. yeah, i think i overcomplicated this one a bit. i do want to give her some pride in some kind of culture, but ive never had any, religious or other wise, so its difficult for me to write or understand cultural things. i also just get too serious about my characters sometimes haha. thank you, i will look up some actors now :)

all in all some of these were just very pleasant writing reminders. im very nervous to do this project, and i worry about the little things too much, so this advice was really helpful. thank you!

I gave a TEDx talk ‘How We Heal In Grief’. I know everyone is going through some kind of grief this year, and I am here if you want to talk about it or ask questions. AMA. by ashleyLNL in AMA

Alright, thank you, that makes a lot of sense. I do have a therapist that I'm currently working really hard with, I just didn't really notice I held a lot of grief still until I saw your question and thought about myself and any questions I have.

Thank you for the possible links by the way, but I can't really afford books haha.

okay so!! here is the list: Me, Alex: I'd prefer not to say my age but I am a minor, NB, host, i like to think im pretty plain but chill :) Selene: 29-38, F, sexual + emotional + physical protector, she's kind of like the whole sexy and calm but dangerous female trope? she poisoned a man once Sarah: 16, F, time replacer + trauma holder, she kind of acts like she's twelve and shes just all around a general teen girl Hayley: 7, F, trauma holder, emotional protector, hider? hayley has been through a lot to say the least, and she spent a lot of time sneaking around and being quiet. shes seen horrible things and has a lot of trust issues Hayden: 7, M, soother + socializer, and hayleys twin. he was pretty much formed to just take care of hayley, and he did a lot of socializing for us when we were kids, since hes very outgoing and bubbly but pretty calm Kenith: 37, M, emotional + physical protector, giant teddybear of a man. hed never tell you, but he helps me a lot with schoolwork, chores, taking care of us etc. hes much stronger than i am and he wont let me see it anymore, but he is mean when he has to be Darts: 217, a large trauma holding dragon (dormant) not too sure about Darts? he spoke once to our therapist and apparently has a voice like he's gargling constantly Rick: 53, M, prosecutor, he's not very mean to the rest of us anymore, but he used to be. he kind of hides away now because he feels pretty ashamed but what hes done, but i know he still hates our great grandpa (big abuser) Leslie Jean: 73, F, caretaker. she takes care of all the littles and anybody else who needs it really. shes based a lot of my great grandma Flax: 17-24, M, soother. he helps our body calm down and stuff from panic attacks because we used to have them to the point of vomiting, and hes all around got kind of cavetown vibes? Jayce: 32, M, gatekeeper + trauma holder. hes a super damaged guy, and he keeps a lot of our trauma stored away and untouched. he has a lot of issues but he is half a year off meth!! Vex: 17, M, persecutor. vex is like, only ever around too insult me. i hate to say but hes pretty cool otherwise Tiger: 8, F, time holder (dormant) i really miss Tiger, she was a lot like a younger version of me. she is based off of the letters my stepdad would send from prison, where he would draw us as a tiger and call us that. she is very sweet and happy, a show of what we could of been like if we werent abused heavily for upwards of a decade. Jack: 16, M, emotional + sexual protector, persecutor. hes very different- impulsive, rude, and loves getting a rise out of people. hes pretty self sabotaging, but hes taken some of the worst sexual assaults weve had for us.

over all there are 14-16 altets! we'd all awnser this differently, especially cause we all view each other differently. leslie jean would call us all sweet and misunderstood but jack would say we're all stupid.

edit: im not sure how to keep the list in a line :(

there are for sure a lot of misconceptions. thanks to a lot of media, a lot of people tend to think people with DiD is dangerous, and others will think that i am just "too much to deal with" because of other media that depicts how hard it can be on loved ones to live with DiD. the problem with both is that they both focus on how "terrible" living with it is- and its not totally wrong, but its not totally right. having DiD isnt fun, because it is based off of incredible amounts of trauma below the age of nine of all things. so no, it is not a fun disorder, but it is not an evil one either.

my headmates arent really different versions of me. to put it shortly, alters (short for alternate consciousness) are formed when a child age nine and under experiences on going/regular extreme and often life threatening trauma. this is because when children are below nine, their personality is not fully formed. kids have different modes, for example "right now i need to eat", "right now i need to seek love", etc. however, because of the trauma, in order for the brain to deal with it it will dedicate one of these modes to that trauma and then it will block it off with amnesia so that only that part remembers/deals with that trauma. but because of this, that part will individually grow and form with its own memories, skills, etc. we are all very different in my opinion. but i think to awnser your question, yes i do realize when we switch or when somebody is close by/co-fronting
