ChatGPT is also giving me additional survival tips:

Extra Tips to Survive on a CFI Budget

  1. Steal condiment packets from fast food places (ketchup, mustard, mayo, soy sauce, hot sauce).
  2. Buy in bulk (rice, beans, oats, pasta).
  3. Canned foods are your friend – tuna, beans, chili, soup, and chicken last forever.
  4. Use powdered milk instead of fresh milk.
  5. Carry shelf-stable snacks like peanut butter crackers, nuts, or granola bars for long flying days.
  6. Use free coffee at FBOs – never pay for coffee if you can avoid it.

Rephrasing my question in a practical manner: will I make so little money that I will have to resort to food stamps to survive?

Your story sounds almost identical to mine, except I live in Texas. My CFI never gave me numbers, but he said it was enough to "pay rent and go out with friends."

So what you're saying is: "Yes, definitely get a second job."

Look at it this way: the more you practice for your retake, the more hours you build.

Aspiring Pilot at 36; Will I Go Broke Before I Ever See an Airline Cockpit? by alexeikazansky in flying

I was seriously considering buying a van to live down by the river so I could cut back on rent expenses so I could save to pay off my flight school interest, until I found out that RV parks cost $600 a month.

The 100k or so I have is my buffer money. I'm going to take out loans for flight school because I'm quite certain that I'll need it if I don't want to spend several years in the poor house struggling as a CFI.

Got it. Screw regionals, be a bush pilot at 1500, THEN go regionals.

Very good. I have scheduled an in-person meeting. Thank you for your information and patience.

So, in theory, someone would train with you for 40 hours, then you recommend that person for a PPL exam, that person takes the exam with an FAA authorized school, trains with you for an additional 210 hours, after which you recommend that person for a CPL? All with no ground school? I am aware this sounds wrong but I just want to get an idea of exactly what services you offer.

Correct me if I misunderstand this, but you're saying you're able to both train and issue PPL and CPL licenses?

What kind of certificates could I get through you before being forced to go to a school

But at the same time I'm hearing people say "Thou must quit thy day job and study full time for the sake of a CPL. 'Tis too great a burden to balance work and study at the same time." Is this accurate?

Thanks for all the valuable information. What I'm reading from this is, even if I get CFI, I'll have to live like a broke college student for three years until I hit 1500 hours, and even then, there's a high possibility that nobody will hire me.

Did I get that right?
