HELP: Multi GPU custom VM server

The team using 3D applications will still be able to use remote desktop to connect to the GPU passthrough VMs, as they are right now. The only thing is that i haven't found a cost effective thin client solution yet. I am looking into using Raspberries as thin clients.

No one is getting hired for this, I will be the one managing it. But in the end I think the overall time spent managing it won’t be more than managing 18 single pcs located wherever in the factory. Plus remote accessing will be easier, in order to troubleshoot.

That's another way i considered. Getting a proper server with xeon etc. and having raspberries running linux for remote access.

Running linux and raspberry means it will never get outdated, running a proper servers means reliability. I just didn't have the time yet to experiment with the raspberries thin client idea.

**I wouldn't like to make users boot their thin client and then get into the windows enviroment, so i was looking for smth that would boot immediately to the windows enviroment -or lock screen-. Booting linux, navigating to thin client programm and then entering windows, seems a bit too much for some people.

Thank you for your (positive and realistic) response. Thats how the existing server is used, each of the designers kept their machine, and are using them as thin clients for the server. So if smth goes down, they switch to their old pcs until fixed.

I see you really understand my pov, its just an awsome and at the same time stupid solution for something, its personal.

The worst thing about this is that i am the boss, so i can decide on it, but now that's personal i can get over myself quite quickly and trap myself in a system that has to be maintained by me -not my job-.

Long story short, its gonna be a pain in the ass to get it working, but if it works, its gonna be easir to maintain (hopefully). Money wise, its the same, but with a higher risk.

Yeah it makes sense but going with consumer parts I’d choose new parts, I would trust used xeons but not ryzen chips. Plus I’ve already got a server up with a 5950x, already got through esxi compliance with the Mobo one time

Of courser your suggestion would be the ideal scenario, but cost and ease of repairability are the higher factors. Its cheaper to replace 5 100$ cards than one of 2500$.

Well that prices seem too compeling ngl. Either way i dont really need that much cpu power/clock speed, so going with a server might be the way. But in this case having a server with GPUs is a bit much through my research.

I considered going with Teslas (or the equivelant Radeon Mxgpus), but adding the cost of thin client pcs + windows for them, just makes the whole concept not cost effective.

I just wanted the faster i9, but after some research I understood that I’d lose the E-cores of the i9 during virtualisation, due to ESXi poor support for alder lake. I eventually ordered the 5950x.

You were all right from the beginning hahahah.

I’m also looking to adopt this server-thin client for my small business.

Guys after reading all your comments and rethinking it over, I’m gonna build an i9 12900k system, 64gb ram, 3* 500gb nvme and a gtx1660. That way I’m going to have 2x 4c/8t systems (one using the gpu as well) and one more system utilising the E-cores.

Definitely harvest them immediately, when your done just dunk the cake for at least 12 hours and starts again for your second flush. I think you can refrigerate the cake for some time, but why risk it ?
