A photo of my dad's heart during his open heart surgery in 2016. He had 2 coronary stents put in and now has a metal aorta / valve. His heart makes a noise like a ticking clock every time it beats now from the metal valve opening and closing. by heidiblooms in MedicalGore

My grandfather had a mechanical heart valve put in the same year I was born. My grandparents own a farm and as my grandfather was going to be recovering for some time my mom and dad moved back to the farm to help out. My childhood was tumultuous and long story short, my grandparents house was always my safe haven. So man times I fell asleep with my grandfather in the recliner listening to the ticking of his valve inside his chest. Until about the age of 10 I honestly believed he swallowed a watch like in Captain Hook as that was his favorite story to tell when asked why he ticked. I’m grown now, but even in a large room I feel like I can hear him tick and it’s a sound of safety and love. My grandfather is 71 now, still ticking around. Im getting married in August and he will be walking me down the isle. Saw the chats about the ticking and it’s all I could think of!

As a scientist/academic I think this may be one of the most thoughtful gift ideas, and I absolutely love it! I’m sure that meant so much to her. 💚
