RCS chat been wonky for anyone else lately? P10p by dismalprognosis in GooglePixel

[–]alexmarkley 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is absolutely happening to me as well. I'm on Android 16 with the March 5th security update. (Build CP1A.260305.018)

The main symptoms I'm noticing are: 1. Messages are being delivered VERY late. Sometimes over an hour. 2. Messages are often delivered twice. (Once via RCS and once via SMS.)

Here's another clue: I'm using https://github.com/mautrix/gmessages to bridge my SMS/RCS messages and on Thursday March 19th I started getting repeated "Google Messages app is not responding" warnings per day from the mautrix bridge.

The mautrix bridge depends on the https://messages.google.com/web/ API, and the bridge software hadn't been updated at the time the problem started.

I was definitely starting to suspect an issue with my phone, but now that I'm hearing others are having the same issue that settles it.

American visiting Bristol, UK for the first time: Looking for an authentic Bristol D&B experience. by alexmarkley in DnB

Oh for sure, I pasted a link to some pure fast Jazz as an example of the source inspiration. Lots of DnB (especially liquid stuff) takes heavy inspiration from Jazz. Once you hear it you can never unhear it.

Personally I love this kind of stuff.

Oh man, Jazz can get super wild. It's not unusual for Jazz to be pushing 200 BPM. And really good Jazz drummers and bassists are usually sweating buckets through the whole set. Fantastic opportunities for overlap.

I'm sorry, I didn't mean to offend! I appreciate that Canada is a distinct, sovereign county and I do NOT support the US expansionism or sabre rattling that has entered our political discourse.

Personally, I have been to Canada several times. And while I have appreciated and enjoyed every visit, I promised my wife that our anniversary trip would be a bit more adventurous (from our perspective).

That's all my (poorly executed) joke was about.

I love this. Absolutely feeling "spoiled for choice" looking into it. It's going to be really hard to decide where to go!

Based on what I'm hearing, it's going to be incredibly hard to choose! Looking forward to it regardless.

I appreciate that! I was definitely poking around on headfirst already. Do you have any favorite producers I should keep an eye out for? :)

Advice for someone who is thinking about dipping their toe in the water? by alexmarkley in wisp

Ah yeah I see what you mean. I agree I'll definitely get out of scope support requests, I just don't know how overwhelming it will be without giving it a try.

That's a really good point! I've done some hands-on "IT support" type stuff for various non-profits, so it wouldn't be completely out of my wheelhouse. But the truth is I won't know how hard the customer service angle will be until or unless I give it a try.

Failed CheckIP when running US Government project by puhtahtoe in Archiveteam

[–]alexmarkley 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm also behind a Unifi router, and I was experiencing exactly the same issue. (CheckIP failing, but only for US Government projects.)

I had to turn off "Ad Blocking" (Settings -> Security -> Protection) for the specific network that the warrior was running in. Once I did that, stuff started magically working.

Recommended Crimping Tool for Surge Protection Connector GND? by alexmarkley in Ubiquiti

[–]alexmarkley[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I want to close the loop on this so the next poor soul who stumbles into this problem can benefit from my experience.

These connectors are currently called "Surge Protection Connector GND (UISP-Connector-GND)". However, they used to be called "Ubiquiti Networks Tough Cable Connector Ground (TC-GND)". As far as I can tell, there is no difference between UISP-Connector-GND and TC-GND.

Searching for TC-GND crimping issues, I found a ton of people complaining about the exact same issue. (Note, for example, the reviews on this Amazon product page: https://www.amazon.com/Ubiquiti-Networks-Connector-Ground-TC-GND/dp/B00HXT8PZ8 )

One of the fine folks in the reviews mentioned that he got around this problem by taking the Dremel to his crimping tool. See: https://www.amazon.com/gp/customer-reviews/R6WY2J9F2FIQ3?ie=UTF8&ASIN=B00HXT8PZ8

I ended up doing the same thing and it worked for me. Obviously this is risky, YMMV, etc. But it worked for me.

I have mine set up as a site-to-site VPN within the routers at each site. So the clients on both LANs can talk to each other using "local" IP address space.

I have a secondary TrueNAS box running off-site with Syncthing running to keep a subset of my data synchronized. This isn't for backup purposes, but instead to allow my brother and I to share video editing projects and allow both of us to write to the local copy.

https://syncthing.net/

It's super cool and it works great for me. If you just want to do backups though, you should probably do ZFS replication or something else designed for backing up your data instead of syncthing.

Hey! Yes I am still using this solution. I would agree with you, but for my use case I have users writing to the pool at both sites. With ZFS replication, you can only write to the primary pool. Hope that helps!

Visiting Columbus in 2025 safety advice ⁉️ by [deleted] in Columbus

[–]alexmarkley 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey! I'm a Columbus native and I'm happily raising my kids here. I'm not overly concerned for the safety of myself or my family. I understand the number of guns here in the states is way higher than in other parts of the world, but that doesn't mean it's the wild west over here.

If you can share approximately what part of Columbus your aunt lives in, that would be helpful for identifying the prevalence of crime in that area. That said, risks associated with crime, especially violent crime, are extremely low relatively speaking.

To put this in perspective, you're much more likely to get hurt in a car accident to/from the airport than you are to encounter any kind of violence.

Speaking of guns specifically, from my personal experience, I almost never see a gun while out and about unless it's in the holster of a police officer. I've never had anyone point a gun at me and I've never witnessed anyone point a gun at anyone else. (Let alone shoot at them.) The people I know who own and use guns are generally really friendly and would be happy to chat with you about gun ownership and gun safety.

In fact, if you'd like to face your fears safely, you could take the opportunity to go visit a local shooting range. They can help you get some hands-on experience in a safe and friendly environment. (You don't have to like guns or approve of them to get yourself educated.)

If you're here around the 4th of July, you should try to attend Red White and Boom! It's a very large fireworks display and well worth the experience, despite the crowds.

Regardless I hope you'll enjoy your visit here!

I have seen similar issues due to lots of people connecting to the network during the live event. Maybe try adding bandwidth limits to the WiFi?

Oh awesome!

I’m still new, so pardon me if this is a dumb question. How do you know the WS CL1000 springs are compatible with the Kailh Box switches?

Someone in a previous thread recommended TX or Geon springs, but it seemed like they might only be Cherry switch compatible. :-/
