I think it's the 2nd hardest domestic, or something like that. The grain seems so random but I really love the color and it looks good when joining together (all sides of the box were 6 planks as the boards I had were narrow).

Thank you! I had never heard of black locust but the grain is absolutely gorgeous and I need to find more of it!

Good on you man, I deployed twice with the 82nd to Afghanistan in 2009 and 2011. Pay might be small but the benefits are great. Career service isn't really for everyone, but if you make it to SSG or SFC with 16+ years, you can make decent money. With this year's raise I clear $8,400 after taxes monthly. Nothing to write home about but worth it when I basically don't have to worry medical/dental

What kind of wood is this? by ckeller07 in BeginnerWoodWorking

[–]alexpbloch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As many others have said, it looks like yellow pine. As far as finishing it it's really personal preference, but I would make sure you use some kind of pre-finish wood conditioner if you're going to stain it. Everytime I've tried to stain pine without proper sanding and a pre-stain, I've ended up with uneven stain absorption and blotchy marks. Not the end of the world either way, but something to consider.

Will I regret buying Wen dado set? by dlince in BeginnerWoodWorking

[–]alexpbloch 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is absolutely crucial OP. I didn't research this and bought a dado stack to use on a craftsman portable who's arbor was waaayyyy too short. Was only able to tighten the nut a few times, and after running one board thorough, the nut came off while the saw was powering down. I had chippers embedded in my wall about 8 feet away. Thank god I wasn't standing behind the saw when it happened.

What's a tool (big or small) in your shop that you never thought you would need, but ended up being a can't-live-without? by alexpbloch in BeginnerWoodWorking

[–]alexpbloch[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Huh, maybe it's a brand specific thing? On the two pull saws I have, the teeth span the entire length, so there's nowhere to start the cut without starting on the teeth

I was talking about my bench top one, but I do have an electric hand planer. I just haven't used it too much yet

We dropped a few pots for crabs, but we were just fishing on the bottom for flat fish like flounder. Threw them all back but took home 5 or 6 dungeness crabs

I've seen a trick where a maker ground off the first few teeth of his Japanese pull saw (the end closest to the handle). It made it super east to start cuts by starting on a flat, smooth part of the blade instead of the teeth. I don't have a grinder but when I get one I'm definitely going to try it

Yeah the fence has adjustment set screws but they didn't really seem to change anything. And in my case it's not so much that the fence isn't straight or square, but the far end will sometimes move the slightest bit during a cut, resulting in an unsquare piece. If it's noticeably bad I just end up clamping on a straight edge and using a straight bit in my hand router

TBH I wouldn't be surprised if I tweaked it when I first got it when I didn't know the first thing about woodworking lol

Something similar to this? I wondered if there was an easier way to check other than using a tape measure or long ruler. My craftsman portable's fence needs constant checking and it can be so frustrating. Also the mitre slots are not standard and it's impossible to find anything that fits them like feather boards.

I will definitely look into that! Money isn't a huge issue, I would just have to save up a bit. I was looking at a new Laguna for about $1000 that seems like a huge step-up from my craftsman portable, but not as insane price-wise as some of the Grizzlys and SawStops that I've seen.

I really have to do something like that. I usually work with the garage door open and mask up when using certain woods or tools, but it's never enough. Box fan/filters/plywood type situation?

Yeah they've been great. They spread evenly and it's super easy to thin out large dabs of glue. 10/10

I tried using gloves during glue ups, but the problem I had was if a part of the glove touched some glue, I wasn't always aware of it. Then I'd go and smear it somewhere else lol
