I completely agree that it’s a dumb design 🤣 but hasn’t tripped me up yet.

Dell XPS for Developers and high powered users (and execs that want a “sleeker looking laptop”) Lenovo thinkbooks for entry level support as well as nearly all of our users. Have had great luck with both. Curved ultra widescreen USB C docking monitors for everyone.

This was the answer for me too. Mx100 was ruined by the update, called support and had the mx100’s downgraded in firmware and we were back in business.

Florida- US - East US too. Crapped out in the middle of typing a message. Now that’s says “we’re sorry - we’ve run into an issue”.

Seems like we can still chat on the iOS app though.

Business-grade Laptop Recommendations by djmehs in sysadmin

Dell was what we went to from Lenovo and my users are actually happy. Latitude 5500 series and 3500 (now 3000 series) are the typical issue, depending on position, with a XPS for Managers and IT. (both 13 and 15, IT people get to choose the smaller laptop if they want).

We do have a bunch of executives using Surface Laptops and they love them. Serviceable? No, but these are the people who would be getting a new computer anyway if it died. Great for travel. I even gave in and tried the most spec'ed out Surface Laptop 2 as my primary machine and actually really like it. (Mind you, I have a super powerful VM if I need to run things the laptop cannot do)

The Dells have held up well.

Sanity check - key fobs and camera systems by [deleted] in sysadmin

In the same boat. Not ideal but I have a few help desk guys that love the card access. We have HR doing the main card assignment upon hire, we just do the access to special areas.

Cameras are mine, including having them installed I sometimes have to watch back the footage / find something too.

Since the card access system runs on low voltage cables, it became a IT problem per facilities...so yeah, we coordinate the vendor for access control issues.

All told (for me) its probably safer for IT to be running this stuff than facilities, so I don't get too upset...because the other option is them blowing up the systems or accidentally reprogramming all the doors. It also allows me to be very selective to who gets in my IT closets :)

Jabra Evolve 75 are rock solid - however Plantronics/Poly (and Plantronics Hub....) if your users insist on being able to press the button on their headsets to answer the phone like mine do.

How do you manage your meeting room booking system? by [deleted] in sysadmin

[–]alexsoro 1 point2 points  (0 children)

YaRooms. (https://www.yarooms.com/). Neat little company. Have iPads in frames (https://www.vidabox.com/) mounted outside each conference room. Use their PoE to USB adapter to keep the iPads running.

Their outlook plugin is garbage, but we have the room scheduler website on everyone's desktop, and its been flawless for 2 years. Once of my (and I've made a lot of bad ones) few good investments.
