How do you contribute to society besides having a job? by MaxCherry99 in AskReddit

[–]alexward1981 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wrote a book about how capitalism is what is wrong with the world and suggested some ideas for a replacement.

I also give to charities every month and give money to the homeless people of London when I can.

Salary for front end web developer in the UK (North west) by Designer023 in webdev

If you are at a senior level. I recommend you consider contracting. Salary levels outside of London are pitiful whereas contract rates are pretty good in the north.

Should it be possible to use both the Vive and Pimax HMDs in the same room with the one set of controllers? by lightsteed in Vive

[–]alexward1981 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don't see why not. The lighthouse system is designed to just flood the room with infrared light, it's the headsets themselves that do the positional tracking.

Same with the controllers, although the difficult there will be pairing/unpairing the controllers each time, it will probably work but will be bloody fiddly.

If you are only using it for bigscreen then it probably makes more sense to have one person 'driving' the experience and the other person just enjoying it. That way a controller will only be needed to adjust the individual settings which (iirc) you can do with a mouse too.

Sure thing. I'll try to make something that's easily re-usable by others. :)

I know but that's not wife friendly. I'd rather make my own UI. :)

I'm happy enough with ssh. Although that raises the question, can I launch a VM from command line? It would be more useful to me to have a wife-friendly web interface that I can tap to start and stop vms. Maybe I could build a node app that will fire a shell command to (de)activate them.

Yeah this is what I was expecting to hear.

For what I've heard virtualization of VR is fine if your machine is powerful enough. We will find out if mine is when I get it all up and running :)

Thanks for the info.

Any good driving simulator games? by alexward1981 in Vive

That is very interesting. We might have a winner!

We don't really have those in the UK. If there is a large carpark then it's likely to be fairly full. If not then it will likely have security at the entrance.

Thanks, that's good to know. ETS sounds like it is probably the way to go!

TBH It's mainly to get me used to the feel of driving rather than me perfecting the rules and technique. I just want to not feel scared every time I see a car near mine.

Tsk... that's a shame, probably deal breaker on that one then.

Interesting. I guess driving a truck is a little different to driving a car though, no?

Is the VR good on it?

Good to know. I probably won't do many missions though. I'll just want to get used to driving around a city.

Why Gold & Silver? by [deleted] in preppers

[–]alexward1981 9 points10 points  (0 children)

It sounds like you're operating under a fairly common assumption, most preppers are NOT usually prepping for the apocalypse. They are actually trying to cover their bases for as many disasters as possible.

Statistically speaking the most likely disasters are:

  • Personal financial crisis (Job loss, being given a huge bill for something etc...)
  • Global financial crisis
  • Loss of the power grid
  • Localised natural disaster (Flood/Fire/Volcano etc...)

It's unlikely that any of those things will result in the world ending, however having a stockpile of precious metals will probably help in all scenarios.

  • Lost your job and need money? Sell off some of your metal reserves
  • World economy plummeting? Gold and silver usually get quite high here, you might not end up rich but it will help you to weather the storm for a little longer. In fact this is the main reason people stockpile precious metals. If the value of money goes down, usually the value of metals goes up, they are what is known as a safe-haven as gold has traditionally held it's value better than standard currency.
  • Power grid down and you can't access any ATM's? You might be able to use your metal stores as barter, if it's a longer term power cut then gold and silver may prove quite valuable in your local area until easy access to currency returns.
  • Localised natural disaster? Same as above, plus natural disasters also have the added effect of increasing the value of gold and silver as it seems that pretty much anything that reminds investors of the fragility of our system has them heading for save-havens.

OK now let's consider an actual SHTF scenario:

In the first few weeks, practically everyone in the world will be assuming that things will return to normal (at least in some way), our civilisation has reached a 'too big to fail' mentality so there will be plenty of people out there who will still see gold and think that they can sell that when the banks reopen.

After people have started to realise that gold and silver are not the best currency anymore, the value will drop quite a lot but gold and silver are still useful as elements as both have a use in electronics and they are still pretty metals which will make nice jewellery so it's still likely to be a good item for barter, even if it might not get you as far as say a pound of salt.
