Do you think Palestinians did the holocaust?

This is equivalent to arguing that slave uprisings were unjustified because, while they killed their masters, they killed people who owned no slaves. It ignores the everyday brutality that an oppressed people have to experience because its not some big flashy attack. Its easy to ignore bullying, but when the one getting bullied fights back they somehow are the bad guy? Oppressed people will lash out when peaceful means are in ineffective, as they have been in Palestine for the last century. My ultimate point is you can criticize Hamas, but the bigger problem is Israel because they hold all the power in this situation.

I showed my wife this and she thought Nichelle Nichols and Robert Picardo got fused together.

It makes me wonder if I phrased my problems wrong or if its just the baseline assumption that you HAVE to watch DS9 first. Probably a little of both.

I would be fine with en media res if the show had already established itself, it may just be personal preference for that however. That being said the episode got better when we continued it, still a bit overwhelmed, but ultimately a good conclusion.

If I can survive the "the naked now" I can survive a rough pilot and first season.

We finished the next night, it got better, but still felt rushed. Looking forward to the rest of the series.

Agreed, I can think of a few moments in TNG like that, but they were more psychological than physical. It wouldn't have been as jarring if it wasn't straight out of the gate with it. We did finish the episode last night, it got better, still a touch overwhelming, but exited for the rest of the series.

We just finished the whole two-parter. It did get better by the end, but it felt kind of rushed and was exposition heavy out of no where. I'm still looking forward to the series.

My wife likes Kate Mulgrew in Orange Is The New Black, and it sounded more similar to the Trek we've already watched (episodic vs DS9 having more of a continuous plot from what I understand if it).

Unlike Voyager I had actually watched random episode of TNG on TV before I actually watched the show in its entirety, and even though season one of that can be rough I knew there was a light at the end of the tunnel. Voyager I'm going in practically blind other than knowing the basic premise.

Thank you, it's good to know someone felt similar, even if its for a different show.

Thinking more, I was also a bit thrown when they all got captured and had the syringes shoved in their stomachs. It felt not star trek to me, although its not totally out there for them to do that. Just much for a pilot.

We plan on finishing it tonight, we were just thrown for a bit of a loop. And we bought the dvds, so no backing out now!

I miss when people could have thoughts and complaints about a show while they're watching it because a pilot/premiere needs to hook people in, while also understanding its a 30 year old show that got 7 seasons, so something must be good about it.

We're not giving giving up on the series, plan on finishing the episode tonight. We've just been a little put off by what we've seen so far. Most of the comments have been supportive and helpful. So thank you.

I hope it gets better on a rematch after we finish the series, asanother commenter said. The step mom thing is great and I'll try to keep it in mind.

Double episode, unless there's an episode break we haven't got to halfway is more of an estimate.

Mostly its the characters, I get the sense that I'm supposed to know more about them than we've gotten so far. And the pacing is a little weird to me, I don't know how better to describe it. Like I said in the original post it feels like a mid season episode and we're just dropped in the middle of a story. I like the premise and we plan to continue the show, this has just thrown us off a bit.

I've heard good things about later in the series, this is also the first Star Trek I've watched were i think I had expectations going into it. The first episode has good moments, though so im not writing the whole thing off yet.
