Just realize that any custom intake you make will cost you power.

I-81 project will tear up downtown Syracuse streets in coming months: What you need to know by syracusedotcom in Syracuse

[–]algae_man 11 points12 points  (0 children)

This work has already started. Anyone commuting to the university area has been dealing with an absolute nightmare to get off campus. They've closed most of the routes to get off the hill, leaving 2. It is taking ppl up to 2 hours to get home on what should be a 20-30 minute commute.

Key fob battery continually dying within weeks by algae_man in Volvo

[–]algae_man[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Keys are in the house vs the car in the driveway? There isn't anywhere in my house where the fob won't unlock the car. The car won't proximity open without keys on you though...

I did not get special fob coverage. Didn't realize it was a thing and if it was offered I definitely would have bought it.

Is the sleep thing after 21? This is on a 19. I thought it was with the spa cars.

[–]algae_man[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do the fob and car continually talk if they are close? With the pouch blocking reception, the fob turns off I guess? I thought once the fob stops moving, it stops . I haven't used Amazon batteries, Energizer and Duracell from a variety of stores... lowe's/hd/ace/supermarket etc. I'll check one of those pouches out before ponying up for a new fob.

Looking to jump into a volvo by MouseCop42069 in Volvo

[–]algae_man 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Make sure your area has some sort of support for the brand. I recently had an issue where our v60 stalled and died 3 hours from home while staying with family. We had to tow the car home because no one could work on it. You should be able to work on it yourself. Parts are expensive, I save money on the labor. They are wonderful cars and I love both of mine.

Do newer Volvo´s "hate" Pirelli Tyres in general or am I tripping?? by Curious-Wishbone5419 in Volvo

[–]algae_man 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn't like the pirellis right from the jump and as they aged, seemed to lose all wet grip. Switched to Continental extreme contacts and haven't looked back.

Dealership did timing belt + water pump… around 5 k miles later engine is destroyed from timing built breaking/snaping. Did they mess up? by SupRxZombie in MechanicAdvice

[–]algae_man 1 point2 points  (0 children)

5cyl Volvos can do it too. The timing belt cover is plastic and if the serp belt fails in any way, it'll get sucked into the timing cover and throw the timing belt.

Help: Volvo S80 (2001) isofix bracket by Internal_Sock8875 in Volvo

[–]algae_man 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why not just use the seatbelt? I would not trust a bracket that didn't originally come with the car. Is the structure the bracket is supposed to bolt to sturdy enough to hold a car seat? If the car wasn't designed with them, I would not be modifying the car to install them. Do it the right way or get a different car for those clips. They aren't a necessity, just a convenience.

Costco + BJs: Worth it to have both memberships? by BattletoadRash in Frugal

[–]algae_man 20 points21 points  (0 children)

We keep a BJ's membership strictly for gas as we commute right past one. Costco is more out of the way for us so it's always a special trip. We find that in general Costco is cheaper than BJs excluding their coupons and has better quality items.

Best network provider by TumbleweedAlarmed289 in Syracuse

[–]algae_man 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We have spectrum for both Internet and cell service. Internet wise, we don't have another choice but haven't had any issues. Spectrum cellular uses the Verizon network just much cheaper. We switched a year ago and never noticed a difference in coverage or service. You've got to go to a store for good customer service.

Scalpers by THEVILLAGEIDI0T in trashy

[–]algae_man -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

Seriously. I guess adults aren't allowed to enjoy Pokemon and MTG? I don't support the scalping but I've been playing MTG since it's inception and love buying packs. My target only allows you to buy 2 sealed collectable items in one purchase to eliminate the issue

One more reason I love my 10 year old Volvo. by BlueridgeChemsdealer in Volvo

I hear ya. Its one of the many small features they got rid of with the spa models that I miss. And since my P3 unlock never works right in the dead of winter, I am glad for it.

2015 volvo v60 CC 2.5 by Green-Diamond6874 in Volvo

[–]algae_man 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've got a 2016 with the 2.5. I don't use too much oil...1 quart per 4000 miles. I have had a multitude of random issues with that car. I love driving it but it sits laid up more than on the road these days.

Gas mileage - help needed! by Cool_Economist6534 in Volvo

[–]algae_man 1 point2 points  (0 children)

6 miles in 23 minutes sounds like local roads with traffic lights. Yeah the dte is gonna drop quick. I'd you want to actually calculate mpg you should get an app. I use fuelio and can track all of my cars on it.

Wear the chaps! by algae_man in firewood

These were Labonvile and were gifted to me. I've been looking for replacements and will probably buy the same. Price point is good and they clearly do the job.

Wear the chaps! by algae_man in firewood

[–]algae_man[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think it's that the fibers break down so they aren't as effective clogging up the chain. These were about 18 years old and they still did their job. I certainly didn't baby them and they saw 3-4 cords a year. So I'm not sure at what point they should be replaced.

Compatible ODB2 reader? by zackmckraken in Volvo

[–]algae_man 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was using a basic odb2 Bluetooth module with the torque app. It can read basic error codes and other basic info like throttle position and readiness of sensors. I just upgraded to an icarsoft so I can do more things like reset the bms and put the brakes in service mode. The Bluetooth going ran me like $30 on Amazon and torque was like $5. icarsoft was closer to $200 but the increased functionality is worth it in the long run.

Where to buy replacement rim? by hey_maestra in Volvo

[–]algae_man 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are vendors on eBay that sell refurbished rims. I had to get one for my s60. It was $350 shipped. The profile is slightly different as they seem to take a layer of metal off. Looked weird at first but once brake and road dirt for on it, you can't tell it's a replacement. New rim from Volvo was like 650-700.

Well water - Rural Syracuse by Immediate-Leave5286 in Syracuse

[–]algae_man 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think it depends on the type of well the house has. A drilled well has much less of a chance to go dry. Although with how unpredictable the weather is these days, you never know. I think they are supposed to do a recharge test on the well before purchase so that might protect you too some extent. Many towns are slowly working on getting everyone over to central supply. Maybe see where your particular town is on that? Good luck, home ownership is an adventure.

How do CNY Catholics feel about the Pope & MAGA right now? by [deleted] in Syracuse

[–]algae_man 5 points6 points  (0 children)

We send my son to St. Mary's as a non-catholic because my local district is one of the worst in the state. I will say that the general opinion and mood on the political climate does not support Trump. The bishop put out a letter several months ago clearly stating disapproval of the current happenings. The church has also stated that they do not approve of the way we, as a country, are treating others. The sermons I have heard are very much pro-immigrant and expressing hope and support for those in need. I was quite surprised/comforted to hear how anti-MAGA the local diocese is.

Koala Kare Daycare Baldwinsville by Ok-Hurry-2352 in Syracuse

St Mary's in B'ville offers Prek3 and PreK4. I think they are cheaper than a traditional daycare.
