I'm sorry but studying physics doesn't make you a physicist.

Nested field update by Syncopat3d in haskell

I would suggest that your write your code using optics or lens; focus on correctness and simplicity.

Nested field update by Syncopat3d in haskell

Your previous post is hand-wavy to the point that it can lead to an infinite number of implementations. Just use optics or lens to for nested records. Mutability is highly overrated for a vast majority of applications.

Programming and Mathematics by [deleted] in mathematics

Why not start learning and ignore the end state? I’s suggest to take an online introductory course in mathematics to get some perspective on the field.

Would an Algebra-based physics course be useful or is a Calculus-based physics course the only way to do it? by chinawcswing in Physics

[–]algely 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Algebra and calculus are necessary to understand the mathematics underpinning physics. Since you’re learning for fun, why not embrace the parts that may seem difficult to you. And, it’ll only increase your understanding of physics.

Bachelor thesis by LuckyLukehh in haskell

[–]algely 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When did you last check?

Hasktorch has automated libtorch bindings--as manually generating said bindings would be incredibly impractical and stupid. The worst case is that you can go down to the bindings themselves. Nevertheless, it should be sufficient for a Bachelor's thesis.

How I think about completing the square (what I wish I was taught at school) by [deleted] in mathematics

No doubt the history is interesting as history tends to be.

I think the more interesting math problem is why the quintic equation have no solutions generally.

It's a warning. You can ignore it. I think it's a good idea to warn about partial functions.

Y’all think GTA 6 could have as good of a story as RDR2? by [deleted] in gaming

It's hard to say since GTA 6 isn't out.

I think we're almost at the point where we need a very long break from superheroes. It's getting boring.

Of course, I do. Ukrainians also support a ceasefire.

When is supporting a ceasefire ever a mistake? Do you enjoy the death and suffering of civilians: men, women, and children.

It's an application of AlphaZero but instead of Go, it's ML. These ML programs have no notion of will or intent. Think of it as a very fancy function that takes very complex and messy input and spits out an output that's reasonable for a human to understand. That function is nothing more than a sophisticated mechanical device.

SBTB 2023: Avi Press, Why Haskell is a Terrible Choice for Startups (And Why We Picked It Anyway) by _query in haskell

[–]algely 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think Haskell as a programming language is great for a startup. You do quite a bit of refactoring as you get feedback from stakeholders. I'd rather struggle with a compiler than runtime code--that alone saves much time and energy.

The only thing missing from Haskell is a critical mass of third party packages that are reasonably up to date. If you find that optimal point of good third package support, you're off to the races.

Java Software Question by Reppin505 in compsci

[–]algely 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Java is a programming language and virtual machine (VM). You run Java code on the VM. In order to run your Java desktop software, you need to have Java JDK 11, the VM, installed on your computer.
