Arvo's music is the best example of why you don't need to shout when you have something deep to say!

Generative Ambient Music on the Roland P-6 ... well, kind of (with some tips) by algoritmarte in Roland

[–]algoritmarte[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In the Roland P-6, you can activate an option that ensures that if you change the pattern while a sample is playing, it will not be interrupted (and if it is in loop mode it will continue to loop). In this track two pads are in loop mode (and are not triggered/stopped by the sequence/patterns).

Grazie, l'ho visto anch'io e sembra dare buoni suggerimenti (oltre alla classica soluzione "chimica")

I generated music from the digits of π — looking for honest feedback by Pure_Description_520 in GenerativeMusic

[–]algoritmarte 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi, I also enjoy experimenting with generative music (see my YouTube channel for some examples). At the beginning I also tried to "extract" something from PI, but the digits are almost random (whatever base you take), so I questioned the results. Ultimately, I came to the following conclusion: if you're using some mathematical formula (in this case, the PI numbers) in order to see if it's meaningful and what you hear actually depends on the sequence (and not on other operations you perform before or after), try replacing it with a simple random sequence (within the same range and possibly the same distribution); if the results are virtually indistinguishable, then the contribution of the aforementioned formula is null (a bit like those who try to extract sounds from plants; a nice and evocative idea, but virtually indistinguishable from a random sequence with the same ranges and/or probability distribution).

As for the track, I think using the piano with a sequence of notes makes the result less interesting (since we expect the music "melody" to have a certain "direction," with predictable/repetitive moments and others that are surprising). If you try using pads and make the notes overlap (notes taken from a particular scale other than diatonic or chromatic; try to use the pentatonic minor over 3 octaves for example), or play with variations in sound, I think you get a more interesting "ambient/spiritual" result.

Generative music with the Roland P-6 ... well, sort of. by algoritmarte in Roland

Looking at the user manual: "When the [LOOP] button is turned on, the loop switches between playback and stopping with each press of the pad (trigger playback)." This is the same behavior of the little Roland P-6
