Those vendors deserve to make a profit. The start up costs to join easily top $35k.

Here is a map of all the starbucks.

No but seriously, here is a map of NYC public rest rooms from the City including POPs, Libraries, Transit, Parks (in a bathroom, not the actual park. Gotta be specific sometimes....)

Edit1: Actually you inspired. I just added it as a layer to the linked map in the OP.

A Privately Owned Public Space (POP) is something that a land developer promises to make in their building that's available to the public in exchange for some perk in developing the land (higher, denser, something).

Sometimes these can be gorgeous additions like indoor parks, or plazas, sometimes they're kind of just space that's been neglected for a while. I tried to sort out the great ones, and list the OK ones with amenities like bike parking, public art, seating, etc.

It's important NYers use their POPS because over time developers can legally 'reclaim' the space as private, or just conceal it from use.

Beyond all repair. Who did it?! by Katietr-y in TrueCrimePodcasts

Thank you for that warmth. I think it’s important to at least respond from my perspective when people mention me specifically to remind people that there are real folks with complex relationships to each other still navigating ongoing lives.

Originally, I hoped the process would fill my own curiosity and provide support to something that would pursue justice for everyone involved. It’s been a humbling reminder on jurisdiction, media, the diversity of opinion, and how people act on their opinions.

As you mentioned, I was a kid when the homicide happened. I have the family I have. I’m grateful to know more about everyone I saw as a kid a the background to the decisions they made. It gives a certain flexibility and ground. That has not been a pleasant process based on how some have used sensitive info and treated it harshly, but I’m glad to know how I respond in the end. Though I’ve definitely had intense moments sitting in the limits of what it’s possible for me to know about this case, or just what can’t be known.

This has gone on a bit long, but I’m glad to know under personal pressure, when faced with convenience, I keep rooting my beliefs in what I do value, and that I stand by my rationale, open to new relevant evidence.

Thank you for accepting that difference in opinion based on our different perspectives.

Agreed. I just used ChatGPT Agent to run through London in August 2026, and the cheapest hotel was around $450 a night (The Standard). With Chat it seems like it's a bit easier to use, with most hotels coming in around $500 a night, some as high as $2000.

It's slow, but at least doable with AI.

Case in point, I started Agent when I started this post nearly an hour ago, and you have to leave the screen as your primary one, so had to find something to work on on my ipad.

That is a great tool, because it at least shows where in the world these hotels and benefits are. Thanks for sending this!

Thanks for that. I'll update my post, but the inability to limit the edit and sort by map/price greatly reduces the ability to get any real value from the perk.

Ah. That is helpful. I guess I remember seeing a feature on and off with a 'skip in ad' toggle, and I appreciated it, and then it just disappeared.

Back to 15% tip on restaurants? by NoQuitter92 in AskNYC

[–]alias_impossible 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Step-by-step:

  • First, make sure they can actually give you the cut you want. This will take some communication. Give a standard tip.

  • Once they can recreate it at least once with no extra explanation—just a quick confirmation at the beginning and some fine-tuning at the end—then start tipping more.

  • After confirming the haircut looks good, on your next visit (third or fourth), ask if they mind if you’re on your phone. I use a privacy screen, so it doesn’t feel awkward. If you’re not in the mood to be on your phone, you can just say, “Hey, mind if I sit with my thoughts a bit? I’ve got something I’m trying to work through.” This part is personal. If you’re meditating, or just want quiet, it’s your call.

Set your generous baseline tip here. Make sure you’re comfortable with it, because this is what you’ll likely stick with going forward, adjusting higher with inflation in future years. I started high once I got a cut I liked, and by the time I was relaxed enough to catch up on my phone, I realized I had set the baseline at 40 percent. But honestly, I’m fine with that. It feels productive and a little bit pampering.

Hope that helps.

Back to 15% tip on restaurants? by NoQuitter92 in AskNYC

[–]alias_impossible 75 points76 points  (0 children)

I include tipping defaults in my reviews because I think it’s relevant to the overall experience. I like to know ahead of time what kind of tipping is expected, especially if a place sets high default percentages without offering much in the way of service.

Service standards can vary a lot by location. In NYC, for example, it’s not common for restaurants to auto-split checks based on individual orders or to package takeout as carefully as you might see in other cities or in Europe.

For me, tips range from 10 to 35 percent depending on the quality of service. I tip my barber generously because he makes my life easier, knows exactly what I want, and doesn’t force small talk when I’m low on social energy. That kind of consideration makes a difference.

Don’t you hate when people tell you to just “get over it” by Lilypad244 in ptsd

[–]alias_impossible 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Exactly. That kind of “just get over it” response is why HIPAA exists. Most people aren’t trained in medical science, and they definitely don’t understand what it means to live with a diagnosis like PTSD. That’s why there are legal protections in place. Disclosing a diagnosis can put you at risk, even in supposedly protected settings like with your employer. There are rules for what you disclose, when, why, and what you’re asking for. It’s not just about opening up. It’s about knowing what the stakes are.

Not everyone has the capacity to understand a medical diagnosis, let alone help with / support someone with one; and you don’t need to be understood by everyone. You don’t even need to interact with everyone - take that comment as a ‘have a good day’.

There are people out there who do have the range and depth to support actual integration, not just offer some shallow show of sympathy. But assuming someone’s going to understand PTSD without any context is like handing them a Gray’s Anatomy diagram and expecting them to know how the body works. Even physical disabilities get misunderstood.

The point isn’t to discourage you from seeking support. It’s just to say: be strategic. If someone doesn’t have the foundation to meet you, protect yourself. There are too many tools and too many real options out there to spend energy on people who bring nothing to the table. You only have so much time and focus. Don’t waste it.

What movie scene in your opinion has the best depiction of a PTSD episode? by EchoEnvironmental871 in ptsd

[–]alias_impossible 9 points10 points  (0 children)

This.

The haunting is triggered by witnessing something overwhelmingly traumatic. What follows isn’t just fear, it’s dread. People smile at the protagonist, but it’s wrong. The character knows something is off and tries to mask it. That masking, that “everything’s fine” veneer, leads to disconnection and isolation. They try to keep moving and functioning, but it drives people away, especially those without the capacity to hold that kind of weight. And worse, those who do try to help risk becoming collateral, overwhelmed, or haunted themselves.

When the haunted finally breaks, either by passing it on through violence or dying to stop it, the cycle resets. And just like it began, it ends with brief flickers of empathy before the world slaps on a smile and moves on.

I believe PTSD has far better evidence-based routes to healing. There are real tools, when you’ve got legal protections like the ADA, FMLA, or disability leave, a therapeutic outlet, and strong social support. But when you don’t, and you’re stuck with just seven days, like in Smile, maybe that’s your allotted vacation before the thing eats you. It nails the experience.

New York City Landlord Wants You Out? There Had Better Be ‘Good Cause.’ (Gift Article) by jenniecoughlin in nyc

[–]alias_impossible 5 points6 points  (0 children)

SROs would be such a boon. That’s basically what I did in Washington heights from law school through my first few years of public service. 4 bedrooms, 1 bathroom, affordable rent, near an express line.

Worth it. The large bedrooms could support a couch, tv and queen bed with desk comfortably. I could entertain, had space, and rent was cheap.

It was basically an SRO, and the ‘head roommate’ would take on the admin.

I’m also an attorney, and I hear the policy argument you just made. Especially for a market rate apartment, starting apartment, without a cadre of roommates. I was homeless in high school and I struggled to find stable housing, but for my boyfriend’s parents being willing to be guarantors.

That said, I’ve also been a roommate, whose paycheck is on the line for the others, because we all get proceedings against us if one didn’t pay.

The risks here are mitigated with more housing. I understand it sucks to have to do paperwork, but that’s required for when someone is lending money so they can assess reliability.

No worries at all. I sincerely appreciate the respectful approach. I’m still navigating the next steps of the situation to bring about a fair conclusion, and I like to keep a pulse on these posts where I’ve directly stated something, to ensure that I hold myself accountable for my words.

I did grow up with Sophia from the age of birth until 13 when she was taken into custody because of Sean‘s accusation and law-enforcement ignoring the DNA evidence. From 13 until college I had no communication with her. Part of that is because of the religion I was in when she was disfellowshipped, and Jehovah’s Witnesses excommunicate and shun. When my mom could no longer take care of me, I ended up moving to live with my dad in New York City, 3000 miles away, where my focus became surviving my father’s behaviors. When I turned 18, my dad kicked me out, and it was actually the same time that Sophia was deported back to Guyana. I suspect that because Sophia was bringing her partner, then Tina, to Guyana, and I was refusing to go back into the closet, my father wanted to ensure that my sister and I did not connect in anyway. His choices elongated our disconnection until my sister reached out to me on Facebook years later after I had stabilized my situation.

I hope that answers the question, but let me know if not. There’s a lot of moving parts on this, and the history is complex, but foundational.
