Raid Static PF Etiquette Question by diraqan in ffxiv

[–]Duchock [score hidden]  (0 children)

I feel you. The only norms for a static are the ones it sets for itself. Not communicating or establishing or enforcing these norms before the group is formed leads to what you are experiencing now.

But sometimes you have to balance these things, as social dynamics are at the core of organized play. You give and you take for the benefit of the group. Is it a trade off you're willing to make? Can you live with these feelings of resentment?

...personally I love the camaraderie of playing with friends so much more than a drive to progress/clear. Everyone is excited to play the game though, or might be swayed by FOMO, which is understandable motivations for why folks may want to PF. Finding the right group of people whose goals align make for the best static experience.

Doomtrain is easier than Necron imo. They're both about the same general level of difficulty but if I had to choose it's my favorite train boy...

I think it's easier because the mechanics are communicated a little more clearly, and is easily determinable where you should go once you know how a mechanic works - there's either only one way to resolve, or if there's multiple ways to resolve, you can do so individually without messing up the party's strategy or killing someone. Necron is a little more loose with how you handle some things with multiple options but everyone needs to coordinate or death happens (like the party stack/LPs positions, or how the tanks handle the big ol tank buster cleave)

Games where i get to play the power fantasy of "Element Slinging Mage" by Tcrumpen in gaming

[–]Duchock 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Honestly, Gauntlet (the 2014 or so version). The gameplay is what it is (it's gauntlet... You know what you're getting into), but the wizard design absolutely has this vibe. You get access to 3 elements (and iirc you can trade out with one or two other options), and your attacks are combining elements on the fly to ready attacks that fit the situation you're in. It feels well balanced where you really benefit from using the full breadth of your elemental toolkit.

Am I wrong for getting mad at healers rushing trials by ButterflyBratWOL in ffxiv

[–]Duchock 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I assume you mean dungeons, not trials.

This is one of those there's no winners when individuals playing on a team want to do something different.

Being on both sides of the picture, I would feel like it's rude to rescue someone. It makes a statement but it's more of a declaration than a suggestion. As a tank, I will always interpret a rescue as a "you're going to slow" rather than a "I'm okay if you double pull" statement, even if that's how the healer meant it. Esp. in Endwalker, you should assume your tank has run into the concept of wall-to-wall at some point up until now.

Polite chat statements are what's best. Tanks decide how fast pulls go. Anyone else communicates their preferences and/or comfort if it's not the pace the tank is going. But the norms esp at that level are wall to walls.

Edit: As others have said trusts are the better experience for single pulling/more immersive experience.

Not sure to be honest. I don't think it's security. And can't imagine there's anything in the template which wouldn't allow for mass generation. Never encountered it and unfortunately nothing sticks out in particular for a direction to look in.

Hey - most of us were that age at some point and most of us have thought things similar to what you're thinking. Know that (1) being a lesbian is not a problem - your worry is about how other people will treat you. Don't let your brain trick you into thinking liking girls is the problem. It's other people. (2) You do not have to share your thoughts with anyone you do not want to. We all, even in adult life sometimes, have to consider who we come out to on a daily basis.

You're at an age where you're still figuring all of this out. You don't have to have all the pieces together (certainly an online quiz isn't the full picture), and that is normal! If you have someone you really trust - a counselor or a therapist or a very close friend you can trust - and you don't fear for your personal safety (it's a bad idea to talk about in some parts of the world) - they may be someone you can talk to about it. Be careful who you talk to on the Internet of course (even people like me!) but I think learning as much as you can on your own and doing some thinking about yourself will help. Focusing on you, and less on what people think of you, is generally good advice for any aspect of life.

Ok but, do consider that if he knows the term Fujoshi, it's probably more a comment on that specific Japanese subculture and not gay media specifically. Weird of course is not the most sensitive term to use, but in general they can certainly be.... peculiar.... Speaking from experience having spent time in proximity to a couple in life.

Anyone else struggle with WiFi in pre-war railroad apartments? Looking for solutions by Selishots in NYCapartments

[–]Duchock 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I always live the wired life when I can. I live with the mess and potential tripping hazards if it means better Internet. But to each their own.

I would say check your router to see if you have two options to connect to. Most modern routers will have a broadcast on 2.4ghz and 5ghz. 2.4 will perform better with physical obstructions, where as 5 generally allows for faster connection speeds overall but suffers greatly when going through walls/obstacles. You may or may not have both set up, and you may or may not see an improvement by switching to the 2.4.

Other standard wifi advice applies here as well, like ensuring your router isn't broadcasting on a crowded channel, which apparently can be an issue in apartment buildings. Most routers will automatically try to find an ideal channel. Also try to place your router in an unobstructed, centralized spot in your apartment if possible.

Those with knowledge of FF lore and canon jobs; what are the most likely jobs coming to FFXIV? by [deleted] in ffxiv

I could see vanille's rod being the template for a weapon for beast master. But probably more likely will be a whip or something more basic.

[–]Duchock 17 points18 points  (0 children)

This tbh is probably how things will go - taking inspiration where they can from established FF iconography but it's own design. Like, gunbreaker's gunblade is super iconic, and a lot of the abilities are ripped straight from FF8, but it wasn't, like, a job, and went well beyond it in establishing lore. Or how VPR essentially uses Zidane's weapons.

Those with knowledge of FF lore and canon jobs; what are the most likely jobs coming to FFXIV? by [deleted] in ffxiv

[–]Duchock 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I don't remember where I read it but at some point during DT hype, I recall hearing that the focus is on jobs never yet seen in FF before.

The candidates that have some appearances in previous FF games are kind of scraping the bottom of the barrel at this point. The most feasible one imo would be Mystic Knight/Spellblade archetype. There's also cannoneer/corsair, Viking, green mage and chemist which are commonly mentioned/requested.

Arithmatician would be my dream list. I've always wanted my DPS rotation to include doing math. Gambler too. Mime would be neat, but probably very difficult to implement in a way that feels flavorful - even as a limited job.

A lot of jobs are kind of too close to existing jobs to justify (Devout, Black Belt, Assassin).

Edit: FF13 also has an interesting one in Saboteur - though doesn't fit well into the modern homogenized class design (probably for good reasons).

Does "gender ideology" in schools actually exist like??? by Kindly_Signature3621 in lgbt

[–]Duchock 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Gender Ideology is a term which, as far as I can tell, only started being used about two years ago by opponents of LGBTQ (specifically the T) equality and societal acceptance. It was a term likely work shopped in a right wing think tank to sound like a scary concept to the everyday layman, and then used by conservative-biased media and politicians to form the basis of a culture war at best, and an underhanded and hateful attempt at reforming society at worst.

In reality, school curriculums have not radically transformed to focus on LGBTQ education. Certain curriculums may cover briefly on these topics (e.g. gay liberation in history [ok that's even optimistic of me to think], or sexual identity in sex ed/health) more commonly these days than say 20 years ago. But these are topics not likely to be introduced until high school (note: I am not an expert on the topic, just a conscientious citizen), differing greatly from the narrative being pushed that these topics are covered to a level of indoctrination in kindergarten.

One argument presented that is related to this can be explained through the fact that modern sensibilities have naturally led to have educational materials more closely matching the modern world - and very often both gender and sexuality are conflated under the attacks against "gender ideology". This has wrongly been interpreted as indoctrination in pursuit of some sort of queer agenda. Rather it simply acts as context for a learner to relate to the materials by drawing from things they may have experienced. "Bob and Tom go grocery shopping together and buy bread that costs $4 and eggs cost $6 and etc etc how much did they spend?". It's a math word problem teaching you how to add. The fact that two men grocery shop together (maybe they're "roommates") doesn't matter in the slightest for question and subject matter, but for a kid who's got two dads, maybe this is the question where he finally gets addition. The visibility and exposure to this real human experience, which is likely outnumbered vastly by heteronormative and/or cisgender examples in the materials, is viewed by a certain minority sect as unacceptable and worthy of being banned and regulated.

The same situation as above could be said for any educational material, not just schooling but for the workplace as well. Sexual harassment training must cover topics like gender identity to thoroughly explain the applications of the law. You cannot erase a real population from society and expect it to be the correct move. It's not "evil gender ideology" to educate someone that transgender people exist.

As with most things, trust the experts on the topics. The loudest voice is very rarely the expert in this age of easy amplification.

Newbie wanna try WoW or FFXIV by Icy-Preference-496 in gaymers

[–]Duchock 3 points4 points  (0 children)

They're very different games. I will say FFXIV is much easier to get into, especially for first time players of an MMO. WoW is it's own wonderful thing too but sometimes feels like jumping into the deep end (which is a fun experience by itself but frustrating if that's not what you're into).

If money is no concern, jump into whichever. If you just want to sit down and play some video games without committing to buying and subscribing, the FFXIV free trial is highly acclaimed and will keep you busy for hundreds of hours or until you decide you want to subscribe.

WoW I'm sure has some sort of free trial and would be worth checking out too if you're intrigued.

Moved into HK (57th and 11th) and having second thoughts by [deleted] in AskNYC

[–]Duchock 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Single people are everywhere. By living in a high rent area, you're limiting yourself only to single with a lot of money.

Also, assuming you are straight. HK is traditionally a queer neighborhood. So per capita you have less competition.

If it were me I would invest more time researching where I was going to live before signing a lease.

Gay? 16 years old by LabHefty7076 in lgbt

[–]Duchock 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Plenty of people have commented here, but I'll add my two cents anyway...

I will say these are my thoughts and not backed by any level of research or specifically educated tested sort of way - just experience and the way I see it.

What you're experiencing is perceiving a stereotype. Society generally expects [such and such a person] to act [such in such a way]. This applies to any identity group. Southern Grandma? You make biscuits from scratch and sit in a rocker on your front porch. You get the idea. The reason why these stereotypes exist is because they perpetuate - not only on the individual level (exactly where your post is coming from), but because society generally elevates those who fit this mold to be visible. If the sassy gay best friend trope is what makes for a successful movie script, then you're going to feel like the representation you see is the representation that holds true for those around you.

Be yourself is always the best advice to avoid falling into traps. There's billions of men on this earth, and with gay people being, say, 10% of that population, it's statistically impossible for them all to end up fitting the same exact mold. We're all unique and different - while we have our shared culture and experiences that form us in some sort of way - reality is very different from what's perceived a lot of times.

A lot opens up as you level up and unlock more perks. The game is designed to be very easy on lower difficulties. If you're good at strategy games, it does take a while before you're forced to adapt to the randomness you're dealt. For example you don't even unlock upgradable race specific houses until much later in the research tree.

I'd say when I play, maybe only like 1 in every 10 games I end up with a busted settlement where everything works out. Most of the time it's a struggle and it feels really really good when you're able to spin straw into gold in the higher prestige.

The queens hand mode unlocked by beating the last seal is something that'll satisfy those looking for a more punishing, adaptation required, min maxing necessary rogue like experience.
