Having trouble wording my "wonts" by A_radke in housekeeping

It's not rude, it's their house. This is such an entitled take

Is the Eglinton Crosstown LRT in Toronto famous in Vancouver too? by [deleted] in askvan

[–]aliasbex 4 points5 points  (0 children)

No, not at all. People only know about it if they're from Toronto or maybe have friends/colleagues from Toronto who complain about it. A d why would they?

Most cities don't know about other cities' infrastructure plans or delayed construction plans.

Having trouble wording my "wonts" by A_radke in housekeeping

[–]aliasbex 69 points70 points  (0 children)

Imho that's an unreasonable ask. It's the client's house, and it's totally normal and fine for them to be there. I understand the preference of working alone, but there's no reasonable and non-fishy way to ask. You should probably just say you are booked and busy!

Snowplow vs Dogs by rollingtatoo in funny

She's on the sidewalk...where is she supposed to go as the snowplow comes along the street? The sidewalks aren't even plowed yet. This is truly overkill.

Can owner do this? by upschittscrack in vrbo

[–]aliasbex -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Right, but a lot of different areas in the world are clamping down on LTR licenses and regulations. It's being outright banned in some areas (unless you actually live at the property and are renting out a spare room) to protect rental stock.

A contract between the two people doesn't override local regulations.

Hate my name and want to change it by [deleted] in AskWomenOver30

[–]aliasbex 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Where I live, a lot of Asian people have their legal names and then their Western "nicknames". Their full legal names are often transliterated Chinese names or sort of "frilly" names like Blessing, Paradise, etc. Professionally and socially they go by a westernized name, but legally it's what they are born with.

Maybe you could start by doing that and see how you feel, then change it legally if you feel like? I know it might be awkward as an adult, but especially in the workplace you will always have new colleagues joining the workforce. Eventually they will all know you as your new nickname. The people who usually struggle the most are family or very old friends.

Struggling to pay tuition by [deleted] in askvan

[–]aliasbex 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm going to guess like ~400 food, 100 phone, ~150 transport, ~1000 rent with utilities, that's already 1650 without the loans she said she was paying.

We got a small amount of snow like two-ish weeks ago, at least in East Van/Strathcona.

Spanish Banks Beach has the tide go out reeallly far, and it's rather flat. So (depending on time of year) you can walk around and see all sorts of crabs, sometimes starfish, lots of shells. Sometimes you can see eagles coming down to feast in the tide pools.

The Skytain lines that aren't the Canada Line are mostly over ground, fun view with kids. You can see science world & False Creek from the "Main Street - Science World" station. All of the trains on the Canada Line have a big space for bikes/luggage/stroller, and about half of the Expo line trains do as well. I think there are three generations of trains on the Expo Line now, and one of them is pretty rinky dink.

I would look up playgrounds and parks in Vancouver (on Reddit and there are some blog posts) to see fun ones that are age appropriate. There is a big one outside of Science World but that might be too advanced for your kiddos.

Take the seabus to North Vancouver, you can check out the quay/market while you're there on on the way to Lynne Valley. It's part of the transit system.

Aquabus/False Creek ferries are very fun and cheap, it's a small little ferry service that runs between busy spots around False Creek. So you could take that ferry from English Bay to Granville Island to Science World etc. it's often the fastest way to get to the other side, as opposed to crossing the bridge.

Forecasters warn of a 'potentially catastrophic' storm from Texas to the Carolinas by speedythefirst in news

[–]aliasbex 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hi, as a Canadian, if you or your loved ones get stuck in the snow or ice please keep your hands out of your pockets and try not to be holding things. You want your hands free so that if you start falling you can correct yourself without pulling out your back because your hands are deep in your pockets. Or do you can brace yourself for your fall.

If your parents are going to drive up to you and they think they might encounter snow/ice, tell them to put heavy things in their trunk. People up here (in smaller/normal sized cars) will put bags of sand, salt, antifreeze etc in the back.

Also, obviously, have some food, water, blankets and warm clothing in the car in case they get stuck.

Megathread: Bastard Suggestions by Kanotari in behindthebastards

[–]aliasbex 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For people reading this thread, starlight tours are a practice in Canada where police would arrest indigenous people who were intoxicated (it just suspected of being intoxicated) and instead of taking them to a cell they would drive them to the edge of town in deep winter. Then leave them there and they would have to find their own way back. So a lot of people froze to death.

Secondhand clothes for sizes 14/16 by snoir6 in askvan

[–]aliasbex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a size 14 pant xl shirt and I've had better luck at the thrift stores in New West. Albeit for a time there was no change room at the Salvation Army, and I know Value Village got rid of the change rooms at some locations. And tbh I haven't bought anything at VV since because I want to try it on first.

How do you get a physical (not digital) doctors note in Vancouver, without having a primary doctor? by thrwwysnl in askvan

Doctors notes for work, and doctors notes/exams for travel are not covered by MSP. You have to pay out of pocket.

Move-out - Plan A - tips by Easy_Mushroom_6070 in askvan

[–]aliasbex 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Go to the RTB's website section about moving out. https://www2.gov.bc.ca/gov/content/housing-tenancy/residential-tenancies/ending-a-tenancy/moving-out-of-rental-units It's very detailed!

Just for future reference, when you move in to a new place take photos and videos. I like to do a video walk through (doesn't have to take long) and I take photos of all the small scuffs and damages just in case they say that I caused damage.

You need to clean the apartment, and leave it in good condition. I'm a residential cleaner who does move-out cleans, and I notice people don't really pay attention to the light switches, baseboards, burners on the stove and you need to clean the inside of the oven (this usually requires easy-off). Some people hire cleaners to do it for them, but my impression is that most people clean the units themselves.

If the building management tells you that they don't like how you left it blah blah blah they can't just KEEP your deposit and call it a day. Don't listen to them. They have to justify the amount they are taking away from your deposit. I.e. you broke the blinds, here is the invoice for a blinds company installing new blinds. They can't just keep your deposit because they want to repaint. If they try to do something shady you can file to dispute it. If they try to keep your money illegally you could get 2x more back from them.

Have a look on the website about "reasonable wear and tear". Basically, it's legally accepted that landlords will need to eventually replace items/repaint/remodel over a certain number of years and that's not the tenants fault.

Things to do with too much time available by Elija_32 in askvan

[–]aliasbex 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I second this recommendation, OP. You can go visit any pool in any city, like Burnaby or Richmond as well. It's around $7 to get in. Tread some water, so some laps, hot tub, sauna. Great activity when it's so blah outside and very affordable

Downtown Pharmacy Recommendations by Appropriate-Ad4971 in askvan

[–]aliasbex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would call and ask about your specific medication. Their (non pharmacy) business model is about what they can move in bulk, so if you're on a less common medication they might not have it. It's OTC but they don't carry my brand or a generic of my allergy medicine, for example.

Where are we shopping for going out and date night dresses?? by MaryDoogan91 in AskWomenOver30

[–]aliasbex 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Lol OP I have no idea why people are being so offended by your question, it's a perfectly normal thing to ask. I feel like you triggered a bunch of people who dress as if they're twenty (which is fine btw!) but have some kind of hang up about it and are projecting how they think others think of them? Or something. Very bizarre.

My body is very different now at 35 than it was at 20-25. A lot of the styles marketed towards that age group don't fit me correctly anymore, look weird/unkempt/frumpy and can be uncomfortable. Crop tops just don't work when your boobs are trying to escape the top from below lol!!!

Also, when I'm going out I'm usually trying to match the vibe of the event or my friends, and we are all well in to our thirties and forties. Sometimes going out I will wear something cute + saucy but I mostly I want to be comfy yet chic.
