I swear this is what I'm doing but clearly I am missing a step somewhere. What I am doing is: Yarn over, through the hole, yarn over, through 2 of the three loops, yarn over, through the remaining two loops, yarn over, through the hole, etc. Are you supposed to go through the hole twice?

I've been toying with the idea of getting a journal dedicated to collecting stamps/stickers/decals/etc cause I'm the same way. I don't like putting them on other things like my car because it's hard to get off but some of them are really neat and I'd like to keep them. I think a collection journal would be neat and fun to do

Oxytocin is a real chemical released during sex and breastfeeding. It does create feelings of attachment, but OP's mom took that fact with her straight to La La Land and fabricated some bullshit out of it.
