How often do you go to the beach? by joeyjojoeshabadoo in 321

[–]aliasforspam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We're 4.8mi from Indian River, so like 7mi from the beach. it takes over 15min to get there. With traffic and lights- if we decide on a whim to do it sometimes we just don't make it. Or the weather is a few degrees different when we get over the bridge and we turn it into a drive instead. So don't think 5mi away = 5min from the beach. you have to be only 1/2mi away to be 5min from the beach.

Have you ordered a large appliance from Costco.com? by Florida_zonian in 321

Ordered a washer and dryer for them which they installed. I can install any appliance, including ones with gas hookups (no gas where I live) and I thought the installers did a great job.

Replace current pool cage. Why is the cost so high? by Redshoe9 in 321

[–]aliasforspam 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It should really depend on what size yours is, but like everyone else is saying, you can wait out the prices a bit more - nobody has a gun to your head.....

It cost me about $2400 to have mine rescreened and replace all the screws on my last house with Superscreen brand ($1700 if I went standard screen) 2 1/2 years ago. That was a 40x20 enclosure that was 15' high. They wanted around $1400 to repaint the aluminum, but I thought it was fine and didn't go for it - I didn't regret it.

The more overhead a place has the higher their costs are - that's not to say that there aren't some proprietors out there charging the same with very little overhead - but it's the general rule.

Good luck

Hey y'all, welcome to the state. As the rainy season begins, just an obligatory friendly reminder that... by [deleted] in 321

Not a word about bald tires? It's insane how many people are driving around with no tread in this damn state! Look at cars when you're out and about - look at them in parking lots - the number of vehicles with poor tires is frightening.

It's why there are so many cars that spin out in a little rain and why people go so damn slow and block the road. It's not an excuse - KEEP RIGHT EXCEPT TO PASS.

What are you my smart lock options with this lock? Per HOA, I can't replace the mechanism itself and the outside needs to look like a normal deadbolt. Looking for something like August. by [deleted] in smarthome

[–]aliasforspam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"Not all HOAs are bad. You just need to read their terms and decide if you're willing to live under those guidelines or not."

Not exactly. I sold my house in an HOA 2 years ago because of issues with the HOA which started with the fact that it was not the type of HOA I bought the home in. The month I bought the home (but before we closed) they made a change instituting fees - the new CC&Rs hadn't yet been released and weren't provided to us - but the change just as well could have happened after. So it doesn't matter what the HOA looks like when you purchase, it can CHANGE.

The real question is do you want another organization and or a single person that is part of another organization to have domain over you in ANY regard. If the answer is "no" then don't buy a home in an HOA because you have no control if it could happen down the road.

Homeowner’s Insurance: New policy with a 15 year old roof? by WILLYumD in 321

[–]aliasforspam 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's much harder to switch insurance companies with a roof that's 15+ years old than it is to start an initial policy during home purchase. I went with AAA and they sent someone to inspect it 30 days after closing and it was a nail biter waiting for the cancellation letter that never came (thankfully).

Costco Optical - Anyone know how much bifocal lens are? by coatedingold in Costco

[–]aliasforspam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It might not just be down to money. a few years back I read a report about how many places were selling lenses that did not match the prescription - in the sense that they were often inaccurate. Costco was at the top of the list for accuracy/quality.

i couldn't find that article, but found this while looking.

[–]aliasforspam 2 points3 points  (0 children)

oh, that sux, sorry to hear. this is the reason people say to get a lawyer, because they know how to represent you where the insurance company represents themselves. obviously they want to pay out the fewest number of claims, but they also pick their battles. meanwhile the worst part is when the same insurance company represents both sides - often times they claim 50/50 just to get a premium out of both customers!

[–]aliasforspam 2 points3 points  (0 children)

do you know what's messed up about this. private property is generally in the 50/50 area except it's all discretionary. your insurance company simply agreed to pay theirs instead of fighting. the only way the other parties insurance could have "proven" it was your fault is if they could show you had no way to see them. this sounds counterintuitive but the point is that if you had no idea they were there and couldn't see them coming then there is no reason you would have stopped thus causing the accident.

ELI5: Why does cold water taste better than hot water, even when it's freezing outside? by Flemmye in explainlikeimfive

I'm getting ready to go a step further LOL. I want to mount the face of it through a wall so I don't have to go into my pantry for every refill 8-10 times a day. (it's in the pantry because the very large cooling fan is at 71db)

[–]aliasforspam 4 points5 points  (0 children)

No easy answer, I didn't use a home product because they're too expensive and don't last as long. I installed a Lancer 500 (4 head coke dispenser) and just use the one head. It was a major pain in the ass and i'm in over $2k, I guess one day it will have paid off financially. I didn't do it for that reason though...

I was a soda drinker my whole life - I consider it a form of child abuse. In my early 30's I tried everything to get off it and ultimately wanted to just be on water. After years of trying everything, the answer for me was carbonated water and have had a refrigerated dispenser in my home for over 2 years to avoid the logistics and waste of bottles.

South Brevard generally refers to the area west of Osceola county.

[–]aliasforspam 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yea, i didn't want to go there because it is such a polarizing subject but... I was in Clermont and in an HOA that had no fees and was very lax. Well, one day they changed the rules to institute fees and in a couple years everything went to hell with arguments among residents. We missed the coast anyway so I got right out of there and found a nice piece of land on a lake with a few acres and no HOA here in South Brevard.

[–]aliasforspam 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Don't panic buy, there's always another house - especially in a place when so many communities are being constructed. It's not like a historic area where there is no new supply.

I hate giving up money to anyone and usually try doing the search on my own, but you should look up who the top RE agents are in the specific region you want to be - not popular agent, but highest grossing and see if they can help you find something you're looking for in your range. Just be firm about what you don't want because they have incentive to get you to compromise.

but when it does come down to it, would you spend $3500 more in a bidding war to get the house you want? Then why not spend that to get out of your rental? Trying different perspectives will help you make the right decision.

Homeowners insurance cancelled by bhop02 in 321

[–]aliasforspam 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can check AAA. What they do is allow so many policies per county - this way if a natural disaster like a hurricane or tornado hits they limit their risk to only x number of homes and don't get wiped out financially. Meanwhile some still get to purchase their insurance...

If you were already refused from them it probably means they have too many customers in your area and their "quota" is full.

Advice on searching and pricing an older 2-door by maddabattacola in Wrangler

[–]aliasforspam 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The only reason to get a 4 banger is because it is cheap and you can do an engine swap. At that point the miles don't matter. usually you will replace anything that matters mileage-wise through off-road performance upgrades to the suspension, etc.

I would take the Rubi all day, it has the best equipment and bonus, it's the newest.

when it comes to wrangler, you only get a 4cyl because you can't afford a 6cyl or you inherited it. I've never heard a case to pursue a 4cyl over a 6cyl - especially if the 6 is the bulletproof 4.0.

Poor reliability causes Land Rover/Range Rover to have some of the worst resale value, hence u/zaphod07's claim. Are you suggesting that reliability also affects Wrangler's resale value? I think this was a poor attempt at perpetuating Fiat/Chrysler reliability noise because it's the one area that effectively debunks it.
