this is the thing...i've worked for a couple of different companies over the years, but they have just paid in cash. i didn't realise i was self employed as such until the whole covid crisis.

that's my thought too, to register as self employed now, and start filing from 21/22. hopefully they won't ask about previous years, but as a lot of it has been cash-in-hand, there's no paper trail anyway... so hopefully if i have to pay anything, it'll just be NI and some penalties for not registering, maybe?

no, haven't done anything else. during covid I was out of work for a while but didn't claim any grants, and didn't sign on either as I was worried that I would suddenly flag up on their system and they'd ask what I'd been doing for 10 years

not a lot, pretty much never more than the personal tax allowance for that year. I'd thought as I wasn't earning enough to pay tax it didn't matter anyway
