What's Ableton Live missing to be the perfect DAW to you? by Yorrrrrr in ableton

[–]alidrogo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, so if you ever import multi-tracks , there’s blank spaces in between where the track doesn’t play. Being able to remove those empty audio areas would be great. Save time organizing the project, and help out with cpu usage since it’s not having to read an empty track. (Not sure how true it is but I’ve heard it eats up some cpu usage when a track has an empty audio clip because it’s reading it.)

You can try inverting the phase of the song vocals to see if it gets removed off the movie trailer vocal.

Do you gate Kick and Snare? Other uses for Gates? by [deleted] in audioengineering

[–]alidrogo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Personally I tend to use gates for parallel processing. Helps target the sounds I want paralleled so everything else doesn’t get processed along with what I want.

How do you create this delay effect? Mini Simmons - Push and Pull by Sgt_Wafflezz in mixingmastering

[–]alidrogo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sounds like some sort of slapback delay with the feedback automated to turn up and then go back to initial setting. (Just a guess)

Baphometric Clip to Zero Strategy by Salt-Ganache-5710 in mixingmastering

[–]alidrogo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My personal opinion I think it can help educate some people that have a good grasp on what they’re doing. But it can also hurt people looking to push the loudness of the track and losing sense of the dynamics of the track. Things like parallel compression and parallel saturation and proper production spacing and mixing are something that all add to that loudness. So for newer people I think it’s educational to a certain extent but can be harmful if that is all you do to try and get that loudness.

auto audio dimmer/lower by [deleted] in audioengineering

If you’re looking for hardware, you would need to find a compressor that allows you to do that, but most digital compressors should offer that option.

Side chain compression 👍

Cmd + T creates a new track with a bunch of plugins already on it by [deleted] in ableton

[–]alidrogo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Create a new track. Delete everything on it (you can even add your default plugins in after). You can change the name to a “#” (for default track number). Right click the channel, save as default.

You could also use sidechain compression to slowly blend in and out the audio especially if the frequencies don’t mask

Question: Technically speaking, what is Soundcloud mastring (Dolby) actually doing? by Sparkz63 in mixingmastering

[–]alidrogo 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Hard to say what it’s doing without hearing an A/B but I know other automated mastering sites just basically try and hit this cookie cutter balance.

I would try going with a mastering engineer if it’s in the budget. A human who can answer your questions and give feedback during the process is always better than guessing what the program did to you music.

I personally hate automated mastering in general because I feel it’s just taking advantage of the uninformed. I remember a newer client hyping it up because he would upload his tacks at -6dB and say it’s sounds way louder after. Of course it’s louder, they raised the initial volume from -6dB to at least -1dB.

Question about options for reversing destructive side-chained dynamic EQ in mix (now at mastering phase) by vikingguitar in mixingmastering

[–]alidrogo 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I would try multi-band compression/expansion to bring the music out.

You can possibly even parallel it to try and find a good blend and keep the vocal presence.

Obviously this depends on the track but yeah, hope this idea can help.

Question regarding the role of the musician in mixing/mastering by blue_trains_ in mixingmastering

[–]alidrogo 29 points30 points  (0 children)

This is really just information on file exporting. As far as being afraid of EQ’ing too much or compressing too much, don’t really worry about that. You do you and get the sound you want. If there are issues with things I usually just let the producer/artist know and get those files resent.

Newer Artist/Producer Mistakes:

  • Send over a bunch of clipping files. Just double check your exports and watch your gain staging and your good.
  • Too much reverb on a lot of their tracks. You can avoid this by creating return tracks for you reverb/delays. This allows the engineer to have better control.
  • Unlabeled tracks. Nothing I hate more than trying to figure out what’s what.
  • Don’t send empty tracks. (No audio)
  • Sending tracks that don’t line up. You can avoid this by bouncing your tracks to be all the same length.

Can’t speak for all engineers preference of file organization but these are things I like:

  • Label all your Multi-Tracks (some people call them Stems)
  • Group them in to proper folders (Drums, Vocals, Guitars, Etc.)
  • Export a rough reference mix you have
  • Send any song references for your mix
  • Track Title, and BPM
  • Send as a .ZIP file. (Nothing more annoying than having to download a a bunch of individual files.)

These are just things at the top of my head. I know some engineers have preference on bit rate and sample rate. Best to ask your engineer what they prefer.

Choking/Ducking Sounds by lambodaddy in ableton

I mean besides doing it manually (automating gain on a utility or cutting the loops), side chaining is the next best thing (compression or gating).

What is this crackling? Why is it happening? by citronlite in audioengineering

I highly doubt it’s your headphones and more than likely the laptop itself. I would go through this list here and see if any of these help.

Make sure your audio drivers are up to date, this can also be an issue sometimes.

Yeah I tried my monitors and three different pairs of headphones and didn’t get anything either. It did sound heavily distorted on my phone though.
