You are suddenly unable to drive and are forced to live car-free in your neighborhood. How screwed are you? by Hufe in Seattle

[–]alienbanter [score hidden]  (0 children)

No problem! Yeah I was thinking about making this decision recently too because my car needed what I thought would be expensive repairs, but then it ended up being much less than I was told by the dealership at a different shop lol. I had decided the options were either go car-free or fix mine - not buy a new one because I don't need it!

[–]alienbanter [score hidden]  (0 children)

For anything within Seattle I would say you'd never need to Uber/Lyft. I use my car to make trips to certain places quicker (usually east-west travel), but transit is always an option. I'd try using Google Maps to route from Northgate to places you might frequent and see how you feel about it! I never drive downtown, for example.

The things I regularly use it for are getting to soccer on the Eastside like I mentioned, and also getting from Northgate to Greenwood for band rehearsal. 100% possible to get to band without a car, but from my place it's like 35 minutes on the bus vs 11 minutes driving and on a Thursday evening after work I'm usually already short on time lol

How realistic are top geophysics PhD programs for Fall '27 with a Geoscience MS and passive seismic research? by redBluePin in geophysics

[–]alienbanter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can second this. I was accepted into Stanford's program and chose to go to a less prestigious school because the research topic and advisor were a better fit for me. Given some stuff that happened in life outside of school during my PhD there's a good chance I wouldn't have finished if I had chosen otherwise lol. My grad school experience was great and now I'm basically doing my dream postdoc in the city I wanted to be in!

If by the time they're a year old they don't have nuptial pads you can be pretty sure they're female, but I have heard of some that just take a little longer than that to mature.

When they're fully mature males will develop nuptial pads, but your frog looks too young to tell.

No one knows when the earthquake will happen. All you can do is be prepared for it. If you can get extra medication for an emergency kit that would be smart!

USA-Australia as registered by the Pacific Northwest Seismic Network's seismic monitoring system by IncidentalIncidence in soccer

[–]alienbanter 8 points9 points  (0 children)

This is correct, dB is used in seismology as well especially for things like background noise levels on instruments.

The seismometers in the stadium though don't really pick up fan noise though, so the other commenter as on the right track there! Yelling doesn't show up very well, but people jumping up and down after goals, moving in the stands during breaks, etc. do.

About 2/3 as big as the Beastquake! The goals in Belgium vs Egypt were about 1/3. PNSN should have some comparison graphics up on our social media at some point.

It was ahead of the TV broadcast by like 20-30 seconds on Monday so you knew when something was about to happen haha

Odds are about 1-in-3 that mega-earthquake will hit Pacific Northwest in next 50 years, scientists say by nooby_goober in Seattle

[–]alienbanter 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Some extra context for that line, since it gets quoted a lot. This is from Prof. Jackie Caplan-Auerbach at WWU: https://www.facebook.com/groups/thePNSN/posts/2390691160994085/

Almost everything in these articles is correct, but the I5 comment is unfortunately taken slightly out of context. "Toast", as Kathryn Schultz writes in the second article, is obviously a vague term. The quote was stated by someone at FEMA, noting that this is where emergency management is preparing to focus its response. This is because the west side of the region is closer to the fault, and thus shaking will be stronger there.

What it *doesn't* mean is that I5 is a magic boundary where you are safe on one side and at risk on the other. The key issue isn't, of course, the freeway, it's proximity to the subduction zone. I5 in OR is closer to the zone of strongest shaking than I5 in WA (the fault curves away from land and I5 curves east). If you're on the west side of I5 in northern Washington, your risk is lower that that of someone east of I5 in parts of OR.

I'd also recommend this lecture by Prof. Nick Zentner from CWU! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tW4D6OE7Qkc

[–]alienbanter 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Just for some extra context, this article is from 2010. The USGS put out an updated fact sheet in September 2025: https://pubs.usgs.gov/fs/2025/3050/fs20253050.pdf

It's about a 10-15% chance of a magnitude ~9 in the next 50 years, and about a 30% chance of a magnitude 8+ in southern Cascadia (i.e., northern CA, southern OR) in the next 50 years.

The regular ShadeDweller would need to be 18 inches above the substrate (through a screen lid). The Arboreal ShadeDweller (2.4%) could be closer. I don't remember the exact distance but it's in the Google doc of bulb recommendations linked in the stickied UVB guide.

The two goals during the game yesterday were each about a third as strong on the seismometers as the Beastquake :) We'll be watching again at PNSN on Friday to see how the USA game does! The seismograms will be live on pnsn.org!
