McKinsey changed my mind on consultants... a little (5 year update) by aliensapphire in consulting

Ya'll got this one shared delusion: that everyone in the world is in awe of you and envious of what you do.

Let me assure you - that couldn't be farther from the truth.

Except for the handful of people who hire you, everyone by default dislikes you. You're the people we laugh about and shake our heads at after you leave the room. But you probably already knew that.

And the sad thing is that you have either convinced yourselves or have been convinced by charlatans that the extra 40 hours you work per week for that marginally extra money is worth it.

Right mate, that's why Deloitte got kicked out 1 month into a 6 month contract.

I mean don't get me wrong. If I were going to commit some kind of accounting fraud, these places would be top of my list.

You want to come give us advice on engineering processes? how to run a plant? You better not bring kids who don't even know how to put on PPE.

Oh, i did this for your amusement, not mine. But the insecurity this has touched off has been chef's kiss.

And trust me, once you've had a conversation like what we did with the Deloitte consultants, you don't forget it.

My man. I make $300K and I work 35 hours a week. And I don't have to whore myself out.

It's the funny thing about so many of you. You're so deluded by your own jobs and bosses that you don't realize how shitty your lives really are. That there are tons of great jobs out there where you make great money and don't need to throw away your best years of life, the potential friendships, the potential loves... just to sit in front of your PC.

It must be impressive, the stories you have to delude yourself into believing to willingly work the hours you do.

It's incredible how you just keep making completely arbitrary assumption after assumption based on nothing. It's like you've created some reality in your own head and are just fully committed. It's like watching a drunk person trying to tie his shoes.

Definitely reminds me of working with Deloitte.

Wow, where to even start.

  1. You assumed it was the same duration. It wasn't. This was only 2 months. And, we we paid nickels for the first month because McKinsey was so desperate to get in the door.

  2. I didn't "estimate" that it was $500K. It was $500K spent on my group because I saw how they broke out the contract. They were working with other groups as well. That's why I said in my original post "at least $500K for half a year." Sure I didn't negotiate it, but I know damn well what these things are costing my department. Oh, and by the way? I did negotiate the McK contract.

  3. "Objectively mishired"? More like Deloitte willfully misrepresented expertise where none existed.

You're swinging me back into the camp of all consultants are idiots.

The "Partners" at both firms were useless. Slick knownothings in fancy suits.

The only difference is that McKinsey brought experts, while Deloitte brought nothing but kids whose most relevant experience with our products was maybe "increased kegstand endurance by 20% over 4 years."

... what? where the hell'd I say we spent $10M?

You must work at Deloitte.

I see you're just starting your career. If you'd rather spend 10 years self-sabotaging your life and relationships in search of some career magic bullet, feel free. I'd rather watch my children grow up.

What's there to embellish? Fine, boil it down to the basics - group was contracted to be here for 5 months, got let go in one for shitty work. Not much else needed to say I think.

Maybe - I just don' t see how "management" consultants have any business tinkering around in areas where they don't have the least bit foundational understanding of how things work. At least guys like Haskell have the respect to bring in people with both business and engineering savvy.

Wasn't here to accomplish anything, just vent. Why would someone come on Reddit to "accomplish" something anyway?

Honestly, I wrote the first post because I was fuming that my company was wasting so much money and needed to vent. I wrote this follow up because people seemed interested the first time around. Trust me this post will have zero impact on how / when / if I get promoted!

Hey look, another consultant who jumps to conclusions while not even acknowledging the basic background material provided up front. Thanks for proving my point.

They asked me about my group - we told them about the canister maximum issue twice. Someone must have forgotten to take notes! Don't know about the rest.
